Easter Ceremonies 1916 in Millstreet

Easter 2015 is just gone, but here’s a look back at the Easter Ceremonies in Millstreet 99 years ago, and how different it was:

1916-04 Report on Easter Ceremonies in MillstreetThe impressive ceremonies connected with Holy Week were carried out with the customary solemnity in St.Patrick’s Parish Church, Millstreet. On Holy Thursday High Mass was celebrated at 10 o’clock, the celebrant being the Rev M. F. Scanlan, C.C.; deacon, the Rev. J. J. O’Sullivan, C.C, and the sub-deacon, Very Rev. J. Canon Casey, P.P., V.F. After Mass the Blessed Sacratment was taken from the High Altar to the Alter of Repose. The children of the Presentation Convent Schools, tastefully dressed, and the members of the Children of Mary Society, preceded by cross-bearcer and neolytes (sp?) . inarched in processional order round the Church. The Altar of Repose, where the Sacred Heart rested in a bank of flowers, and lit up by innumerable tapers, formed a beautiful spectacle, and was visited all day by a constant stream of devoted worshippers. On Good Friday Mass of the Pre-sanctified was celebrated by the Very Rev. J. Canon Casey, P.P., V.F., and tho Blessed Sacrament was taken back to the High Altar in processional order, as on Holy Thursday. All through theo day the Church was visited by worshippers, whose demeanour was most edifying. The glorious Feast of the Resurrection was celebrated with all the joy and splendour befitting the great occasion. Anita Notaro

If you are a fan of Eurovision then this will be very sad news. Anita Notaro was the tour de force responsible for directing the Eurovision Song Contest in 1993 from Millstreet in Ireland.

The 1993 contest was brought from the small village of Millstreet in County Cork and was a directing challenge for Anita Notaro but she confounded all the critics and made it one of the most memorable Eurovision’s in the contest’s history.

Anita worked as a highly successful Director with RTE (Irish National Broadcaster) for 18 years where she directed many programmes from The National Political Election coverage to The Eurovision Song Contest to Ireland’s most watched [read more …] “Anita Notaro”

A little bit of us will be seen all over the world this Christmas

2014-11-06 An Post Christmas Stamp 2014 which is part of the Harry Clarke stained glass in St.Patricks Church MillstreetThere’s thrilling news this morning that a photo of part of the Harry Clarke stained glass window (Adoration of the Magi) in St.Patrick’s Church Millstreet has been selected by An Post as one of three specially commissioned stamps for this Christmas. So a little bit of Millstreet will be seen all over the world this Christmas on letters and packages.

We featured the stained glass previously when it appeared on Fr.James McSweeney’s website 2u.ie. The photographer Bill Power is from Mitchelstown has an interest in Harry Clarke’s stained glass, has outlined in a nice piece  how it all came about:

MY PHOTOGRAPH GOES GLOBAL
It’s official – the news that I’ve had to sit on for a few months.

“Irish Echo” in New York Refers to Millstreet Website Feature

2014-05-28 kim and Kanye at Millstreet Town Park-800Fr. Paddy O’Byrne, West End has just been in touch with us in relation to an article that John D. Neenan has read in New York’s “Irish Post” newspaper.   The article refers to the excellent “scoop” feature which Michael Cashman of our website team shared some weeks ago when he gave the impression that the two famous American people who were on honeymoon in Ireland had arrived in Millstreet Town Park  and were on the way to trace their Aunagloor roots at Millstreet Museum! (click the photo above to see the article)   The couple did in fact visit Ireland but unfortunately there was no sign of them in Millstreet … except in Michael’s hugely popular photoshopping expertise giving the real impression that they had landed in Millstreet a few weeks ago!   Thank you, Fr. Paddy and John D. for alerting us to such an uplifting and truly prestigious mention of the Millstreet website in the “Irish Echo”.   And well done to Michael for such creative wit.    One never knows who could be visiting www.millstreet.ie !    (S.R.)

Conor Hartnett teaching Soccer in Rio de Janeiro

2014-06-10 Conor Hartnett with Carlao and kids at their concrete pitch in RioSays Conor: ‘‘FIFA is doing a great job taking the game away from the people.’’ Two years ago, Irish-born Conor had an epiphany. After finishing work as a business analyst at Westpac in Kent Street, Sydney, he needed to kill time before training with Balmain Old Boys, who play in the Canterbury league. He typed ‘‘round-the-world ticket’’ into Google and volunteering abroad came up. ‘‘Guys, I’m moving to Rio,’’ he told his teammates when he arrived at training that night.
Conor, 39, now partners with two organisations in Rio. IASESPE, with which he helps children aged between three and 14, and Carlao’s Football Project, which involves a hundred kids.

Another good performance from Mark

2014-06-08 Front Cover of the Cork v Waterford match programme - #6 Mark EllisMark Ellis had another good game for Cork against Waterford in the Munster Senior Hurling quarter final on Sunday last in Thurles, mopping up lots of loose ball, tackling well and delivering good ball to the forwards.

It was also great to see the Millstreet man on the front cover of the match programme (pictured right).

All Ireland champions Clare are up next Sunday in the semi-final, and undoubtedly Davy Fitzgerald will target Mark’s lack of experience … but we do hope Mark keeps up his good form and solidifies his place at centre back.

Highlights from the match can be seen on the RTÉ Player (until June 15th)

Below are some photos and excerpts from what the papers are saying:

“there’s certainly a better structure in defence. Mark Ellis has a presence at number six, which was lacking in recent seasons since Ronan Curran’s retirement”Evening Echo (9th June)

“Cork’s defence was also more tightly focused and [read more …] “Another good performance from Mark”
