Concert – Wallis Arms – Saturday 13th April

Saturday night promises to be a great night for the people of Millstreet and beyond.  The 3rd Millstreet Trad Festival is hosting an evening of entertainment in The Wallis Arms Hotel.  Four of the amazing teachers who will be delivering workshops at Millstreet Community School on Saturday morning will lead a music seisiún in the hotel starting at 5pm.  So, come along and soak up the great atmosphere.
Then at 8pm the headline act will be great new trad band “The Conifers”.  This is a great young band who’s line up includes Bryan O’Leary from Turreencahill.  Bryan is known locally as the grandson of the famous Johnny O’Leary – indeed well known to those who used to frequent Dan O’Connells in Knocknagree.  The concert promises to be fantastic with a mixture of music and song from the 5 members who come from all over Ireland.
But the fun doesn’t stop there.  The Wallis Arms is our festival hub, and the music will continue after the concert:  Those who wish to just hang out are very welcome, but there will also be a Trad Disco – young James Linehan will be the DJ for this first of a kind event for Millstreet in the back room of The Wallis Arms and – who knows – there could be a breakout of tunes in the front bar as well.
Admission to the concert is €15 which includes entry to the trad disco.  But, if you just want to arrive for the disco admission is a mere €5.  Come along and see what you think!!!

Marie on Ireland’s Got Talent

Marie Kelleher got special mention on Ireland’s Got Mór Talent last evening where she sang Hopelessly Devoted to You (Grease, 1978) for the judges. As she says herself, she’s better at the singing than the talking, and a mighty performance too. Marie and her sister Breeda make up the Diamond Sisters and we’ve known for years how good they are. Watch her performance on  Ireland’s Got Mór Talent on the Virgin Media Player (from 18:49 to 20:13) (here)

John Martyn at Millstreet Music Festival

John Martyn was one of the acts that played at the Millstreet Music Fair in 1996:

As anyone familiar with his story will attest, Martyn was, and is, not only one of the finest British singer-songwriter/guitarists of the last 30 years but is also known to be a renowned consumer of fine liquor. Indeed, the last time yours truly set eyes upon him, he was propping up the bar at the Millstreet Music Fair, a rapidly-emptying bottle of Jack Daniels in his hand. Needless to say, this comes as a bit of a revelation to him! “I can’t say I remember that one too clearly,” he laughs, down the phone line from somewhere in the north of England. “It was a good gig, though, I do remember that much.”Hot Press (2009)

Boys of the County Cork

Today marks the 100th anniversary of the War of Independence. Congratulations to the Presentation National School who marked the anniversary with a wonderful rendition of the Boys of the County Cork:

While it was not clear in the beginning of 1919 that the Dáil ever intended to gain independence by military means, and war was not explicitly threatened in Sinn Féin’s 1918 manifesto, an incident occurred on 21 January 1919, the same day as the First Dáil convened. The Soloheadbeg Ambush, in County Tipperary, was led by Seán TreacySéamus RobinsonSeán Hogan and Dan Breen acting on their own initiative. The IRA attacked and shot two RIC officers, Constables James McDonnell and Patrick O’Connell, who were escorting explosives. Breen later recalled:

…we took the action deliberately, having thought over the matter and talked it over between us. Treacy had stated to me that the only way of starting a war was to kill someone, and we wanted to start a war, so we intended to kill some of the police whom we looked upon as the foremost and most important branch of the enemy forces. The only regret that we had following the ambush was that there were only two policemen in it, instead of the six we had expected.[33]

This is widely regarded as the beginning of the War of Independence.  [read more …] “Boys of the County Cork”

Aidan

“Here is a song we have liked for a long time and decided to record it. The song is called Aidan, Written by Rathcoole native Jeremiah O’Keeffe about his young nephew. Jeremiah is the writer of many fine songs . In this song he encourages children to enjoy childhood and not be in too much of a hurry to grow up. Although written a couple of decades ago the song lyrics are very relevant in today’s fast moving world.
Aidan was arranged and produced by Noel O’Leary from Millstreet a well known Musician and Producer.WishKelting everybody a very Happy Christmas and Peaceful New Year.” – The Kelts
