There were lots of more climbers on the mountain today, but they didn’t linger at the top for a photo due to the very windy and wet weather at the summit. But the stars of the show today were the horse that was ridden to the top, and Michael Lynch who made it to the top for the 150th time this year.

We started at the Wallis Arms, up Liscahane, across to The Lodge on Macroom Road, rested at the ancesteral home of the Leaders (Mount Leader House). Through mature woodland to the viewing point of Musheramore mountain Coomatrush and Millstreet in general. Great day for the walk and we had a group of 30 with us.

Our ‘A’ Walk between Ballyvourney and Millstreet traces the route over arguably the most rugged and beautiful part of this entire journey.
We earnestly hope to finish the day with less casualties than O’ Sullivan Bere suffered!!

Our ‘B’ & ‘C’ Walks are similarly rewarding with no less a personage than Minister for Tourism and Sport Leo Varadkar stating that our ‘B’ Walk (The Claragh Loop) is his ‘ favourite festival walk of 2011′ .

Our ‘ C’ Walk reflects the historical influence of landlords in Millstreet. Commencing at the Wallis Arms Hotel and taking us past the ruins of the once magnificent Mount Leader Estate to a viewing point on Claragh Mountain overlooking Millstreet and the Blackwater Valley.

Full restaurant facilities are provided by the Wallis Arms Hotel which is Base Camp for the Festival.

Looking forward to you joining us for what is certain to be a memorable walking experience.

Read the full details on the Festival Brochure.

Noel Buckley for alerting us to the Minister’s visit this Saturday morning. (Seán Radley)

We thank Margaret Crean for alerting us to James as he arrived in Millstreet this evening. He is undertaking this amazing walk in aid of Childline. James was presented with the “Millstreet Passport” at the Wallis Arms where members of the Red Cross and Friends who were having a meeting, extended a royal welcome. One can obtain extra information on his overall walk on http://www.justgiving.com/malin2mizen . He left Malin head on Saturday June 11th, tonight he is staying in the home of the Crean Family, tomorrow he continues his journey to Inchigeelagh, and further to Durrus and Mizen the following days. We’ve also interviewed James for LTV2 and this will be seen in our Autumn schedule. Sincere congratulations to the very courageous, friendly and inspiring James. You are an Ambassador Supreme for Northern Ireland, James. (S.R.)

Meeting with the very fit Group at Mount Leader, LTV2's Brendan Murphy (on video camera) and I arranged to interview the sincerely friendly and very cheerful people for the Autumn Schedule of LTV2. They accorded much praise regarding the excellent Clara walkway. It's wonderfully uplifting noting the visit of such interesting people to our area who promote the advantages of such healthy outdoor pursuits. —————–
Reminders of the Anglo-Irish ascendancy are a compelling attraction on the way up Claragh Mountain.

THE GHOSTS of old estates with their haunting reminders of the Anglo-Irish ascendancy always provide a compelling attraction and I can mooch around them for hours, especially if they are not well frequented. Such is the case with the Mount Leader Estate through which the Duhallow Way provides access to Claragh Mountain (452m) whose profile provides such a fine backdrop to the town of Millstreet.

Inside the now gateless portals the stream-eroded remnants of the old avenue lead to a broad expanse of open parkland beyond which stands Mount Leader.

Built in 1834, this fine Georgian mansion was lived in until the 1970s. The speed of dereliction has been so rapid it gives the impression that it was abandoned at a far earlier date and only the shell remains but the interior and exterior walls seem solid enough. Cut into the side of Claragh, the site looks out over the Finnow Valley to the Boggeragh Mountains beyond.

<!--
Continue along the old avenue as far as a small lake and then turn west along the side of a ditch to a stile that leads on to an attractive narrow stone walled road lined with deciduous woodland which is on the newly developed Clara Loop.

After 200 metres, turn right through a wooden gateway on to a forest track which leads uphill as far as an information panel which marks the junction where the Duhallow Way and the Clara Loop part company.

Keep straight on until a stile brings you out on to the open mountainside where a clear track leads to the summit close to which stands a cross of rusting metal girders held in place by four long wire stays. It makes me wonder, yet again, why people who feel it necessary to place crosses on mountaintops do not take the trouble to erect more edifying structures. Nearby is a more aesthetic ancient stone cairn.

As an outlier of the Cork-Kerry Massif, Claragh is an excellent view point. Away to the west lies Caherbarnagh with glimpses of the Kerry mountains beyond while to the north the green pastures of the Blackwater Valley stretch away to the dim profiles of distant hills. To the south the upland is dominated by the transmission mast on Mullaghanish and scatterings of wind farms.

From the summit head southwest down a heathery slope to spot height 337m and continue westwards over two stiles to get to a green road. You are once again on the Duhallow Way and a most pleasing section thereof. The track contours around the base of the mountain above an elegant patchwork of large pastures enclosed by stone walls and lines of beech, oak and ash.

FARTHER AROUND , under the steep northeast face of the mountain, you will enter an intriguing landscape with stands of birch and ash reaching high into the upper slopes. Moss covered remnants of old walls mark the vestiges of bygone settlements. Nothing new here you might say but the juxtaposition of the different elements of the terrain give the sensation of being in a foreign place.

It’s back to reality for the next stretch when the track switchbacks over the eastern spur through a dense plantation of conifers whose interconnecting upper branches make a dark tunnel in places. The forest path links up with your outward route at the information panel and then you have a very pleasant walk downhill back through Mount Leader.

Passing the house one can’t help but reflect that our modern ghost estates – even if they are left to be devoured by encroaching flora – will never have any romantic appeal because they will never have been lived in.

Route Claragh Mountain, Co Cork

Map Ordnance Survey, Discovery Series, Sheet 79.

Start/finish The entrance to the Mount Leader Demesne. Grid Reference: 273 885.

Get there The entrance is 2km south of Millstreet on the R582, Macroom to Millstreet road. There is parking for four or five cars off the road.

Time Four hours.

Distance 10km.

Total ascent 350m.

Suitability The route is easy enough. But you will need a compass, map and rain gear – these are essential.

Food/accommodation Millstreet and Macroom

Registration is in the GAA Hall.

The race is basically an out and back route with a loop near the summit. It will be on trails and it could be described as very steep. Perhaps not everyone’s thing but some might be interested. Just don’t wear your best shoes

The Course (see the map above): The race begins on Clara Rd (just opposite the carpark) heading south. After about 800m (just after the grotto), take a sharp left onto a narrow road, and after another 600m, take a right turn onto a path going through the forest. This path zig-zags up through the forest, until you go over a stile on your left that exits the forest. You now follow the path keeping the forest to your right, until you go through a gate on to the open mountain. You are now on a narrow path that swings to the right and then takes you to the summit. Turn left at the summit, and head straight back down to intersect the uphill route and then follow your route back to the finish.
