Funding for Our Museum and Our Millstreet Website Not Required Until Autumn 2022

We’re delighted to report that due to the magnificent response to our annual fundraising for Millstreet Museum and the Millstreet Website in August 2020 no fundraising is necessary this year.   By Autumn 2022 we expect that we shall most likely need to fundraise to offset the costs involved in providing both services.   Sincere thanks to everyone for being so very supportive and for being such Loyal Followers.   Let’s take a brief Virtual Tour of Millstreet Museum where a royal welcome always awaits.  Tap on the images to enlarge.  (S.R.)

Mayo and we listen to Norah Hickey’s new single as well as Sheila Fitzgerald’s new single.  We also at 9.35pm remember a Cousin of James Wickham of Minneapolis, Minnesota – the late Eileen Fitzgerald of Brooklyn, USA whose mother was Bridget Hickey of Knocknagullane.

Centenary Commemoration on Sat. 9th Oct. 2021 in Derrinagree and Dromtariffe

The Clonbanin Ambush Centenary
Commemoration Committee
wishes to make the following announcement: On Saturday 9th October
2021, our Centenary Commemorations / Celebration will take place in
Derrinagree Church Carpark.  This commemoration is to honour the men
and women that participated in the War of Independence and the fight for freedom. To celebrate the Freedom and Self-
Governance, that we all take for granted today. Let us not forget the supreme sacrifices, the extreme hardships, the human
endurances that those brave men of the Volunteers, and the women of
Cumann na mBan went through for that fight for our freedom. Even to
the extent of some of them of sacrificing their life for the cause.
Now is the opportunity, for us, and all of you, with any drop of Irish
blood running through your veins, to say thank you to those
Heroes.  To come together for a few hours, to bond together
like true Irish men and women, to pray for, and commemorate those
heroic deeds. The Committee can only try to make it happen…it’s up to
you to make it happen. This is where the True Republican will stand out,
from the Republican that will say everything and do nothing. On behalf of
our Chairman and Committee members who have put so much time and effort into organizing this commemoration. I want to make this-
heartfelt appeal to every man woman and child, to please, please come out and pay your respects to our dead Heroes, because remember they
have all gone to their Eternal Rest, and hopefully will be watching down
on us, from their Heavenly resting place.  Also, I would appeal to every
house in the Parish, in Duhallow, Cork, Kerry, Limerick, Tipperary and
any other County that had Volunteers taking part in the Clonbanin
Ambush, to proudly fly our National Flag, the Tri Colour with the dignity
and respect it so richly deserve on the days leading up to and for a few
days after our commemoration. Let us turn our countryside into a
sea of Green, White and Orange. If we could do it in 1990
for the Irish team, surely, we can do it for our Men and Women of the
War of Independence.
Unfortunately, due to COVID-19 restrictions only 160 people will be allowed in the Church in Derrinagree, but it will be relayed to the carpark by amplification so as everyone can participate. Also, we will be restricted
to the number we can accommodate in Dromtariffe Parish Hall
afterwards for refreshments and an evening of entertainment.  So, it will
be on a first-come, first-served basis, for the first 200/250 people max,
plus a few special guests. This will have to be strictly adhered to, and will have to strictly supervised and enforced. Please let us make it a day
to remember as there is only one Centenary.

We thank Centenary Commemoration Committee Member, Charlie Drake for the wonderfully comprehensive Notice above. Tap on the image to enlarge. (S.R.)

“Where the Road Takes Me” at 7pm this Sunday on C103

We thank Presenter, John Greene for advance information on this Sunday evening’s programme – 26th Sept. 2021 at 7pm on C103.  (S.R.)

Where The Road Takes Me – Sunday 26th Sept.

This week on ‘Where the road takes me’, John Greene goes in search of ‘characters’.  When your search takes you to the Northside of Cork City, it would be difficult to avoid them.

Underneath the Bells of Shandon, we meet the ladies of Eason’s Hill Friendship Club.  Around the corner, Dan Linehan speaks about manufacturing boiled sweets, like Clove Rocks.  The same traditional methods and old machinery are in use since 1929.

At the top of Cathedral Road, we meet iconic Northside shop owner Con O’leary who also dipped his toes in politics a number of years ago.

And, Herbie Hendrick recalls almost seventy years as a band member and conductor of the Butter Exchange Brass and Reed Band, affectionately known as ‘The Buttera’. [read more …] ““Where the Road Takes Me” at 7pm this Sunday on C103″

“Where the Road Takes Me” at 7pm this Sunday on C103

We thank Presenter, John Greene for advance information on this Sunday evening’s programme – 12th Sept. 2021 at 7pm on C103.  (S.R.)

Where The Road Takes Me – Sunday 12th Sept.

This week on ‘Where the road takes me’, John Greene continues the Tale of three Norries.

In Programme two we meet songwriter John Murphy who was asked to write a number of songs for a CD to commemorate the burning of Cork City in December of 1920.

Although a launch and promotional events were out of the question because of Covid-19, the CD has almost sold itself.

Only seventy copies remain, with all proceeds going to ‘Alana’s Butterfly Wings’

Like the other two Norries, John has a story to tell which is unrelated to music.

Born in the UK, John was brought to Ireland for adoption.  He relates his story articulately, speaking about his dysfunctional and unfit adoptive parents in Cork.

Living the life of a loner as a child, without love, care and affection, John still finds difficulty in socialising.  Meeting his birth-mother for the first time and benefiting from her company for two years before her death, is a part of his story told emotionally. Day Trip to Spike Island on Tues. 21st Sept. 2021

The Clonbanin Ambush Centenary Commemoration  Committee

wishes to announce the following dates of importance:                                  Tuesday 21st September. A day trip to Spike Island, including a seat on a Luxury Coach, with reclining seats, arm-rests, head rests, plenty air-conditioning and ample leg room, total comfort guaranteed.

  • Kealy’s Coach will pick at the following places:        Derrinagree Church 08. 30am.  Dromagh Church 08.40 am    ……     Kanturk Church 09.00am Mallow Race Course 09.30am.
  • The day will consist of Coach tour to Cobh, then on to the 11 00am Ferry to Spike Island, where we will be met off the Ferry by our appointed professional Guide, followed by a 40/45 minute guided, historical and informative tour, a very comprehensive and detailed account of the War of Independence.
  • Originally the site of a monastic settlement, the island is dominated by an 18th-century star fort named Fort Mitchel. The island’s strategic location within the harbour meant it was used at times for defence and as a prison.

The military Gun Park alone has over a dozen exhibits used in coastal defence spanning over 300 years of warfare, as well as a recreation of the Battery Observation Post which would have targeted the guns on Spike Island.  Plus, many more items of interest including military transport and smaller arms.   It is much loved by military enthusiasts and anyone with an interest in the War of Independence. It has plenty toilet and rest-rooms facilities. A Café for refreshments.

The return journey will be via Mallow with a stop-over at the Arches Bar & Restaurant where we will enjoy a 3-course meal.   Main Course, Dessert   and   Tea / Coffee.

Total cost Including Coach, Ferry, Guided Tour and Meal  :   €40.    Pints, Wine and Drinks at the table are extra at your own expense.

All names and monies will have to be submitted and paid up-front before Tuesday 14th September 2021 with no cancellations accepted, because the booking will only be finalized with Spike Island when paid in advance.

Seats are limited and will be on a first come first served basis. The Coach is almost full, with just a few seats left.    This is a final reminder.

In accordance with H.S.E guidelines, masks will have to be worn on the coach and on the ferry.
