Genealogists and family historians all over will be delighted to hear that the 1901 census of Ireland has been online for some two weeks now. There are only two complete censuses relating to Ireland: those conducted in 1901 and 1911.  The 1911 census went online just under a year ago, and contains slightly more information about each individual, but the 1901 census includes the following:

  • Name and surname
  • Relation to head of family
  • Religious profession
  • Education
  • Age
  • Sex
  • Rank, profession or occupation
  • Marital status
  • Where born
  • Irish Language
  • Specified illnesses

The census is hosted on the nationalarchives.ie website, and you can navigate the Census in two ways:

  1. Using the Search facility on the site, or by
  2. Browsing Millsteets District Electoral Divisions of the time: Coomlogane, Drishane, Keale, Cullen, Crinnaloo, Rathcool, Skagh, Kilcorney (listed as Kilcarney).

Hi all,

Father’s Day is virtually upon us and, if this takes you by surprise or you had forgotten the exact date then Millstreet Country Park is here to tell you that Sunday 20th June is the one to remember.

Father’s and Grandfather’s sadly usually end up with generic gifts for Father’s Day from their loved ones, simply because of the lack of real options for Father’s Day gifts. Dads can be tough to buy for, and depending on their interests, there may be no obvious choice.  So how about something more thoughtful than a tie for Dear Old Dad this year?

Fancy doing something different? Then why not take your Dad outside this year? Why not visit Millstreet Country Park and plan a number of Father’s Day activities and make this special day an enjoyable and memorable event for him and for the whole family.

The selection of the Cork Rose for this years Rose of Tralee took place last weekend. Joanie McAulliffe represented the Millstreet Country Park (where she is the Marketing Executive). Unfortunately she did not win on the night as that honour went to Laura Mitchell. Though it is great to see someone local involved.

Newly formed GAA club St. Johns (who are loosely based in the Aubane / Kilcorney area) are in Championship action tonight against Lismire in the Duhallow Junior B Championship opener. The match throws in at 8pm in Banteer. Go along and give them the support they deserve for all their hard work.

Final Score: St.Johns 0-8 Lismire 0-8. A host of injuries probably cost them the game, but there will be another chance of a first step to glory for them in the replay.

When reading the article below, keep in mind the fact that it refers to “Millstreet Country Park and Surrounds“, and that nothing is supplied that shows that the Park allowed hares to be removed, but that never got in the way of an organisation with an agenda. The Country Park have responded by saying that they allowed no hares to be removed from the Park.

The Irish Council Against Blood Sports has called on Millstreet Country Park to act to keep coursers out of its 500 acre nature attraction. A document obtained under the Freedom of Information Act shows that a total of 78 hares were removed from the park and its surrounds last November and December.

In a letter to the park, we commented that interference with the resident hare population is “contrary to the ethos of the country park which invites people to come to enjoy nature and discover the ‘exciting revelations within the animal kingdom’.”
An extract from a document obtained by ICABS. It shows that 78 hares were captured from Millstreet Country Park and surrounds late last year.

The narrow road by old Mushera it winds up and down
The backway from Cork through Rylane that ends at Millstreet Town
In Winter the drivers crawl slow through the fog
That steals down the mountain and cloaks Togher Bog
But the scenery is breathtaking on a nice Summer’s day
For the tourist who drives on the mountain roadway
The Boggeragh Ranges above you the valley below
By the hills where gorse, heather and bracken do grow
Where in Spring and in Summer the male lark does fly
Up from the rank bracken to sing in the sky
A small speck in the universe till in gray clouds he disappear
The bird out of sight though his music one hear
On the narrow high road by Mushera from here far away
The tourist amazed at the beauty today.

This magical sunset over Tullig Hill which overlooks Millstreet happened on Wednesday evening last. The sun was a big bright red and reminiscent of the sun setting over the sea in a movie based in Los Angeles! James Mc Sweeney featured it on his site 2u.ie yesterday, and it’s one of many great photos and reflections on his site.

DUHALLOW has welcomed a new club on the launch of the newly formed St John’s GAA club. The club takes its name from a landmark in the Aubane area and those associated with St John’s have a good reason to look forward with a buzz of exciting anticipation for the season that lays ahead.

It’s all of 28 years since a GAA club operated in the area.

For all concerned, it’s a challenging task in difficult times, yet meetings to date have delivered a positive and decidedly upbeat message about St John’s club on and off the field.

Officers elected for 2010 are President Denis Kelleher, Chairman John Twomey, Vice Chairman Jerry Kelleher, Secretary Don O’Riordan, Joint Treasurers Gerdi Buckley and Michael O’Riordan.

Currently they are training two nights a week, and new members are welcome to join the setup.
