Where The Road Takes Me – Sunday 18th July

In ninteenth century Ireland, the laws of the land weighed heavily in favour of the rich and well-off.   For family members of murder victims, they had a lot to endure besides coming to terms with the death of a relative.

Inquests were held almost immediately in the victim’s house and those on the inquest jury panel were required to attend and view the remains.

Jury members were chosen from the well-heeled in society and in some case specifically for their tendency to favour a guilty verdict.

For the perpetrator of the crimes, he or she, if found guilty would normally be sentenced to hang.  There was little if any time for an appeal as the sentence was usually carried out within three days.

This week on ‘Where the road takes me’ and in the first of a two part programme,  John Greene looks at how the judicial system has changed since then and we also delve into some of the historic murder cases from the 19th and early 20th centuries in County Cork.  [read more …] ““Where the Road Takes Me” at 7pm this Sunday on C103″

Where The Road Takes Me – Sunday 4th July

On this week’s ‘Where the road takes me’, John Greene concludes his tribute to John  O’Leary, a regular contributor to the programme, who died on April 26th last at the age of 98.

This week, athletics and general sporting guru Fr. Liam Kelleher remembers a trip to Medjugorje with John.

From the archives, John looks back on the talented politicians from all political parties, who contributed to the foundation of the State.

And……… Did Taoiseach John A. Costello take offence to ‘Roaring Meg’  being placed close to his table at a function in Canada by a Unionist supporter in 1948, or were his words misconstrued.  We hear John O’Leary’s view on why the Irish Politician took everybody by surprise back home, when he announced the Government’s intention to repeal the ‘External Relations Act’, which would and did cut our ties with the Commonwealth. John O’Leary who lived in Cobh but was originally from Carrigroe in Clonakilty passed away in his 98th year on April 26th last.

This week on Where the road takes me, John Greene looks back at some of his conversations with him

Where The Road Takes Me – Sunday 20th June

Twelve years ago, US Airways Flight 1549 landed safely on the Hudson River in New York after a bird strike resulted in engine failure.  All 155 people on board were rescued.

This week on Where the road takes me, Fred Caruso joins John Greene to tell of his experience aboard a commercial flight to Germany in 1962, when the engines went on fire and the pilot ditched  the plane amongst house-high waves 500 miles from the Irish coast.  In three days the life rafts had almost reached the Galley Head Lighthouse.

Fred who was a 22 year old US Paratrooper at the time talks about writing a final letter of thanks to his parents and why he refused to take responsibility for one of the two children on board.

Twenty two of the passengers died on the life raft and those who survived were brought to Cork.

Fred tells of his terrible battle with post-traumatic stress, meeting his wife Ellen and settling in Glengariffe. [read more …] ““Where the Road Takes Me” at 7pm this Sunday on C103″

Christy Ring was a very close friend of the late Paddy Martin, the Taoiseach’s father and on this week’s edition of ‘Where the road takes me’, Mícheál Martin joins John Greene in the Stadium to talk about his life and times.

You’ll find the conversation moving swiftly from one subject to another.

Where The Road Takes Me – Sunday May 30th.

This week on ‘Where the road takes me, John Greene brings the three part programme on the sinking of the Lusitania to a conclusion.

In programme three, we outline the remaining years in the lives of the two protagonists, Capt. Bill Turner of the Lusitania and Capt. Walter Schweiger of submarine U-20.

Although Turner managed to clear his name somewhat, his scapegoating by Churchill made it an almost impossible task.

Schweiger, on the other hand suffered the same fate as the 1,197 Lusitania passengers he had sent to a watery grave two years earlier.

For passenger Julia o’Neill from Rosscarbery, tragedy followed her survival in her new home in Kilgarvan Co. Kerry.

And, were the Irish Government aware of the real identity of the German Submarine Captain they invited to Ireland in 1966 to commemorate the 1916 rising? [read more …] ““Where the Road Takes Me” at 7pm this Sunday on C103″

All three programmes deal with the myths and facts surrounding the ship and its sinking by German  submarine U-20 off the Old Head of Kinsale.

The programmes also deals in detail with the background to the Cork passengers, but one in particular, that of Julia O’Neill from Froe in Rosscarbery.  The part of Julia is played by Mary O’Leary.

As we reach another anniversary of its sinking,  ‘Where the road takes me’ remembers  the tragic story of the Lusitania in a three part programme.

British and Irish Maritime Historians join John Greene, as they attempt to make sense of a ruthless act which claimed the lives of 1,197 people off the coast of West Cork on May 7th 1915.

However, we do know that Lusitania was not an innocent passenger ship, as we also locate and translate the report of U-20 Submarine Captain Walter Schweiger, who ordered her sinking.

                                           *********************

Survival stories are supposed to have happy endings, but certainly not in the case of passenger Julia O’Neill from Rosscarbery, as a local historical group act out her story.

We launch a new song about the doomed ship and we meet the new owners of the wreck which lies in 300 feet of water off the Old Head of Kinsale.  [read more …] ““Where the Road Takes Me” at 7pm this Sunday on C103″

 Where The Road Takes Me

Having spent forty years as the frontline face of flagship TV on BBC and ITV, Denis Tuohy came to Castletownbere for a number of years and an opportunity to tackle his autobiography.

Armed with a plentiful supply of conversational subjects, he joins John Greene this Sunday evening on ‘Where the road takes me’, in the first of a two part programme.

Tuohy had overseen eight General Elections in the UK and in her memoirs, the late Margaret Thatcher referred to her interview with him in 1979, as the most hostile of that campaign.

There was also a day spent in the company of the infamous Charles Manson Family, after locating them in hiding in a remote area of California.  As the mood darkened considerably, Tuohy and his camera crew were lucky to leave alive. (One of his interviewees was later jailed for life for the attempted murder of  American President Gerald Ford))

He was also thrown off a Pirate Whaling ship in Portugal for asking the wrong questions.

And although his acting career didn’t reach the dizzy heights of his broadcasting career, Denis Tuohy still managed parts in Fair City and Killinaskully. [read more …] ““Where the Road Takes Me” at 7pm this Sunday on C103″

 Where The Road Takes Me

Next Wednesday April 28th is the centenary of the executions of four IRA Volunteers at what was then Victoria Barracks in Cork.

Patrick O’Sullivan and Maurice Moore who were arrested during the Clonmult ambush in East Cork, were executed with Patrick Ronayne and nineteen year old Thomas Mulcahy who were arrested at Mourneabbey five days earlier, during the War of Independence.

On ‘Where the road takes me’ this Sunday evening, John Greene  looks back at the Mourneabbey ambush and discovers that……

* The IRA had no escape plan.  (53 men –  made up from The Flying  Column and local volunteers)

* The unexpected arrival of the Manchester regiment confused the    Lancashires and allowed the Flying Column escape.

* The Black and Tans who were stationed nearby in Mallow were not  allowed to take part and why the British Railway Worker’s Union  were threatening all-out strike if they did.

* A spy was eventually identified and hunted, not only by the IRA, but  later also by ‘Free Staters’ during the Civil War.

The first of six casualties on the Local Volunteer side was Michael Looney who was shot twice on different occasions and died seven days later.  His nephew tells us exactly what happened. [read more …] ““Where the Road Takes Me” at 7pm this Sunday on C103″

 Where The Road Takes Me

After singer Sandie Jones passed away in September of 2019, it was necessary to organise a ‘GoFundMe’ account in order to fulfil her wishes to be brought back to Dublin, to be buried beside her parents.

It was a sad end for an extremely talented and beautiful woman who rose to fame in 1972.

When Joe Mac and Brendan O’Brien left the Dixies Showband to form Stage 2 in 1972, it was Sandie Jones who took over as lead singer with the Cork band.

She won the National Song Contest staged in the Cork Opera House the same year and then went forward to the UK to represent Ireland in the Eurovision Song Contest, coming 15th with ‘Ceol an Grá’.

Where The Road Takes Me

In 1921 the IRA Hierarchy made an order that women who were found guilty of spying or collaborating with the enemy, were to be banished from their homeplace.

However, some local Commanders rewrote those rules and executed at least three women who had crossed the line as they saw it.

On this week’s edition of ‘Where the road takes me’, John Greene delves into the story of Beara woman Bridget Noble who was kidnapped by the IRA, held hostage for over a week and executed.  Her remains were never located.

Where The Road Takes Me

After an horrific road accident in Iraq cut short his career as a trauma surgeon,  Dr. Mike Ryan joined the World Health Organisation in 1996 and went to work in their newly opened unit, dealing in epidemics and infectious diseases.

Born in County Sligo, but raised in Charlestown,  County Mayo, he comes from farming and merchant stock. This Sunday evening he speaks to John Greene on Where the road takes me.

While we hear about life in war-torn countries fighting Ebola and SARS, the vast majority of the conversation turns to Covid 19.

He is strong in the belief that, despite several warnings, we had our heads in the sand as to the seriousness of this disease.

How ‘Lockdowns’ should be a last resort if we have no other options and how there’s much more to fighting Covid-19 than getting our own doorstep clean.  [read more …] ““Where the Road Takes Me” at 7pm this Sunday on C103″

John Greene begins in Ballinhassig, where police shot dead eleven people during a faction fight in 1845.  However, there was little time to dwell on the tragedy, as the famine came hot on its heels and provided more to worry about.

Later, but not far away, the McCarthy family move to London after being evicted from their home.  Their son Liam is born.  His name is now synonymous with Michael Collins and Sam Maguire.  As a result, the local GAA pitch is named in his honour and the cup for the winners of the All Ireland senior hurling championship bears his name. In the middle of the 18th century, Kerry was making a name for itself in tourism circles.  There was a desire in Cork to connect with their nearest neighbours.

As the road network was virtually non existent, a John Murphy from Castleisland was commissioned to build a 56 mile long stretch of road linking Killarney with Rathmore, Millstreet and Cork City.

He would have to include a total of 24 bridges along the way and raise the money himself to do so.

Having completed the work, Murphy was in financial ruin, but his road network helped one industry to thrive and flourish.

The 2015 movie The Revenant, was known for more than its storyline,  with several actors and crew leaving the set because of the gruelling conditions,  the demands of its director and running unnecessarily over budget.

When stuntman and actor Glenn Ennis signed on,  he would never have realised that his three minute cameo in the film would bring him fame and be one of the main talking points of a movie that was not always historically accurate.

Playing the part of a grizzly bear protecting her cubs, the ferocity and horror of his attack on Di Caprio, made it the most talked about film piece of the year.  Questions were also asked if the bear had molested Di Caprio.
