New York Poet Patrick Most Impressed by National Dairy Show 2018

Renowned Poet Patrick Thomas Hammer from New York is presently paying his yearly visit to Ireland and especially to his Millstreet Relations – the O’Rahilly Family of Tanyard Wood.   We thank Patrick for the presentation of his most recent Book of Poetry to the Museum.   He is blessed with such a wonderful sense of humour and is so superbly witty.  He is a magnificent Ambassador for America and so impressively proud of his Irish roots.   As well as visiting Millstreet Museum on Saturday, 20th Oct. 2018 he was truly impressed by a visit to the excellent National Dairy Show at Green Glens – an event which this year received RTÉ television national News coverage.  On a future “Radio Treasures” on CMS we shall feature a special interview with Patrick in which he recalls a splendid visit to John C. Casey’s New York shop.  Here we join Patrick on his Millstreet visit.   Click on the 27 images to enlarge.  (S.R.)

Now that’s a very happy photograph!  Poet Patrick with his O’Rahilly Relatives and Friends before visiting the Museum and the National Dairy Show.   There is always such a royal welcome for everyone at the home of Michael and Betty O’Rahilly.   Brendan Murphy provided a most enjoyable Video Presentation of some of our most popular LTV2 programmes….including our snow coverage, storm reports, wind turbines and lots more.
A little surprised how big Millstreet is….on the map!

Wild and Wet 👣 The Duhallow Way

Ellie and Carl are walking every National Way-marked Trail in Ireland. They make videos and  photos about each trail and about the heritage of Ireland as they go.  They were on the Duhallow Trail in the last couple of days, walking by Mushera, Millstreet, Clara, Lough Murtagh and and further back into Kerry. Unfortunately they had some showers to contend with, but those are the joys of spring and mountains. This morning they started the Slí Gaeltacht Muscaraí, from Millstreet going south towards Ballingeary.

Ellie is a landscape photographer, while Carl is a software developer. Find out more about them on their website ToughSoles.ie, but also check out some of their lovely videos and their photos on social media: facebook / twitter / instagram / youTube

Hiking across Ireland, one anxious step at a time

Maysen is hiking across Ireland, one anxious step at a time, for Mental Health Ireland.

“Everyone has mental health, however some of us are more aware of it than others. Most often, we become hyper-aware of our mental health after being diagnosed with a mental illness. From a young age I’ve struggled with my mental health. Anxiety, depression, and self harm are a part of me that I don’t remember ever being without. Yet for many years, I kept that fact to myself. The medical system and the world around me led me to believe that admitting to fighting a battle with my own mind made me weak and undesirable.
Mental Health Ireland is an organization that helps people such as myself. It is a national voluntary organisation which was established in 1966 as the Mental Health Association of Ireland. MHI’s aim is to promote positive mental health and wellbeing to all individuals and communities in Ireland. They have … ” [read her full article on EveryDayHero.com]

Maysen should be in Millstreet today. If you see her, say hello, and maybe give her a hand as others have already done in the last few days.

PS. I’d love to hear from anyone who has information on the Callaghan Clan or the Boyles.

Visiting Millstreet from Florida

Dave and Terry Anne
Dave and Terry Anne

Florida residents, Dave and Terry Anne visited Millstreet in April on historical trip and with the intention on being in Dublin for the Easter Rising Commemorations. Dave is a cousin of Hollywood actor Brian Dennehy, and they share the same links to Millstreet – the home of their grandfather. They stayed in the Wallis Arms overnight, met with Seán Radley, visited the Bridge Bar, and got in a few more local spots. Now they have gone and made a photo journal book of the trip, called “A Return for History”, which gives an insight no how others see us Irish. The book is viewable online, with the overview of the book here, and the book preview is here (Millstreet is at day 8 april 22nd).

In 2014 they visited Millstreet for the first time, and again produced a  photo book of their trip called “Our Pilgrimage to Eire”. Again the book is online with the overview here, and the preview here (Millstreet is at day 17 – page 61).

Ireland Day 4: Millstreet and Banteer

As if we didn’t already know the extraordinary lengths Seán Radley goes to when it comes to Millstreet, its history, and helping visitors to our town: the Roberts family were here in 2012 have written about their day in Millstreet:

“Sean taught us a bit of Gaelic as he dropped us off: “Slan Abhale” or “Come again!” I hope we can take him up on it. As I stood in the cool, gray air on the train platform, I took the time to reflect on our adventure, that had given us such a genuine Irish experience where we could explore a small town off the beaten path and get a small glimpse into how our family might have once lived.”

Peter Lonergan – Walking Visitor to Millstreet

Joe Fitzgerald, Willie O'Regan, and Peter Lonergan at the front door of Mount Leader House

A visitor to Millstreet for the last two days was Peter Lonergan, a Cork man living in Australia for the last thirty years who is following the footsteps of the O’Sullivan Beara March of 1603 from West Cork to Leitrim. Of his arrival in Millstreet on Monday he said: ” Running(walking!) behind schedule Joe and Willie welcomed us to Millstreet by leading us over the last climb of the day (Clara Mt.) and into Millstreet. A day that began at 9.15am came to close at 6.15pm and some 20 odd miles covered was again a very special day and I finish by saying a Cead Mile Maith Agaibh to Padraig agus Donal, Rachel agus Cathal, Joe and Willie for their Welcome to Country.”

He stayed for the night at Geararoe B&B with Eily Buckley. The following day he walked with Michael Thornton, who took him across the Boeing, to Derrinagree School, and on to Lismire, and he said of his day: “To end a perfect day Michael brought me to his
