Video: Industry in Millstreet 1987

The RTÉ Archives have recently added a new video titled “Industry in Millstreet 1987“. It was a dark time for the town after Apple Computers had left Millstreet in 1985, leaving us with high unemployment, and the Community Council were trying to encourage businesses back into Millstreet. There are interviews with the late Ken Brennan and Sgt. Seán O’Sullivan, as well as clips from around town. Click here to watch the video. Also below are some images from the video, with lots of locals recognisable:

Magical Christmas Spirit 2018 in Millstreet

The true spirit of Christmas is in evidence throughout Millstreet Town with the official turning on of the Christmas Lights at The Square on Friday evening (7th Dec. 2018) revealing a magnificent festive creation, the Christmas Jumper GAA Run in aid of Irish Cancer Society on Saturday and people adding Christmas magic to shop windows with outdoor Christmas Trees further enhancing the atmosphere.  This year our Christmas Tree is located near the Corner by the original Tom Radley’s Forge.  Here we share a variety of images illustrating that wonderful Christmas Spirit.  Click on the images to enlarge.  (S.R.) Rás Tailteann passing through Millstreet today

A few minutes later than scheduled, under blue skies and a temperature of 22C, the Rás Tailteann passed through Millstreet on its way to Mitchelstown.  There was a over a minute gap between the leaders and the main peleton. The Boys National School came up town and created a fantastic atmosphere. Well done everyone that came out !

There’s a number of more videos and photos of the race below:  [read more …] “Rás Tailteann passing through Millstreet today”

Spring Horse Fair 1965

Video from the RTÉ Archives

The video above has been published by RTÉ of Millstreet coming to a standstill for the Annual Spring Horse Fair of 1965. The Fair was not only a time for bargaining and dealing. It was also a social occasion that continues to attract the crowds, young and old, to the town. The video above is from a Newsbeat report broadcast on 12 April 1965, and was probably held on Sunday February 28th 1965 (the closest Sunday to March 1st). [update July 2015: the video has since been removed by RTE 🙁 ]

Below is a gallery of 27+ stills from the video. It is likely many of the people are not locals, but it would be interesting if people could help us recognise some people in the photos: [read more …] “Spring Horse Fair 1965”

2003-06 Changes in the Square 1 Jerry O'Riordan's Grocery Shop and StoreUp to the 1990’s Jerry O’Riordan’s was one of a number of grocery shops in the Square in Millstreet. In June 2003 the three houses at the corner of the square which made up the shop and store were to be demolished to make way for the new credit union. Seán Radley was on hand to take photos of the demolition and at the time were published on what was then for a short time, the Millstreet website (millstreet.20m.com).

Ringing in 2013

As is tradition, Millstreet Pipe Band will Ring in the New Year in the Square this evening (Wednesday December 31st) at 8pm.

The flying cloud, the frosty light:
The year is dying in the night;
Ring out, wild bells, and let him die. [read more …] “Ring out the Old, and Ring in the New”
