The 37th National Dairy Show to take place in Green Glens Arena, Millstreet on Saturday 19th October

As autumn beckons thoughts turn to the last agricultural show of the year, the National Dairy Show, which takes place on Saturday 19th October in the Green Glens Arena, Millstreet.

The fun, family, farming day out offers something for everyone and has steadily grown into Ireland’s premier indoor agricultural event. The Show always offers a wide range of attractions and this year is no different with an extended Trade Stand area with over 150 trade exhibits, marketing agricultural based products and equipment.

A new addition to the Show this year are the informative, bite-size seminars from leading companies in the agricultural industry offering further advice and insight to help farmers in their day to day business, so make sure you don’t miss the opportunity to meet and discuss with suppliers of a wide range of products from the latest in milking technology to animal nutrition, veterinary products, detergents, animal dosing, AI companies and leading financial institutions to name but a few.

The National Dairy Show has been designed to attract an audience throughout the farming community and on the day live demonstrations will promote the latest in hoof care restraining equipment as well as up to date hoof pairing technology. Tractor and loader demos and bale slicing demos will also feature with up to eight manufacturers participating alongside a wide range of machinery on display; surely not to be missed!

Farm safety will also be included, particularly in relation to prevention of farm accidents, which is always close to our hearts and Gardai will also be on hand to discuss rural crime prevention.

The Show always brings something different to the event and this year introduces a sheepdog and ducks demonstration as well as bespoke seminars from the experts and not forgetting tempting food tastings and light bites from local producers as well as full restaurant facilities within the complex.

Cattle handling competitions showcasing young handlers from throughout Ireland always add an air of excitement to the day as the audience in Millstreet has the opportunity to see the cream of Holstein Friesian and Jersey cattle before the Irish Examiner Supreme Champion is crowned to the waiting crowds later that afternoon. This year the Show are delighted to welcome Swiss judge, Erhard Junker, who will officiate at the event as he brings a wealth of experience from Shows across Europe.

New York Poet Patrick Most Impressed by National Dairy Show 2018

Renowned Poet Patrick Thomas Hammer from New York is presently paying his yearly visit to Ireland and especially to his Millstreet Relations – the O’Rahilly Family of Tanyard Wood.   We thank Patrick for the presentation of his most recent Book of Poetry to the Museum.   He is blessed with such a wonderful sense of humour and is so superbly witty.  He is a magnificent Ambassador for America and so impressively proud of his Irish roots.   As well as visiting Millstreet Museum on Saturday, 20th Oct. 2018 he was truly impressed by a visit to the excellent National Dairy Show at Green Glens – an event which this year received RTÉ television national News coverage.  On a future “Radio Treasures” on CMS we shall feature a special interview with Patrick in which he recalls a splendid visit to John C. Casey’s New York shop.  Here we join Patrick on his Millstreet visit.   Click on the 27 images to enlarge.  (S.R.)

Now that’s a very happy photograph!  Poet Patrick with his O’Rahilly Relatives and Friends before visiting the Museum and the National Dairy Show.   There is always such a royal welcome for everyone at the home of Michael and Betty O’Rahilly.   Brendan Murphy provided a most enjoyable Video Presentation of some of our most popular LTV2 programmes….including our snow coverage, storm reports, wind turbines and lots more.
A little surprised how big Millstreet is….on the map!

Media presence!

Pictured at the launch of the National Dairy Show being held in Millstreet on Saturday 20th 2018 are Seamus Crowley, Sponsorship Co-Ordinator, John Kirby, Show Director, Minister Michael Creed, Jane O Mahony, Committee Member and Denis Kiely, Committee Member with Isaac & Pippa O’Mahony.

Minister for Agriculture, Food & Marine, Michael Creed, T.D., was on hand recently to launch the 36th National Dairy Show which takes place on Saturday October 20th in the Green Glens Arena, Millstreet.

The Show was first held back in 1982 and since then has steadily grown into Ireland’s premier indoor agricultural event. The word indoor was of huge significance to the Show when in 2017 storm Ophelia failed to upstage the holding of the annual event, and recent events at the National Ploughing Championships, when Storm Ali caused a major disruption, certainly brought home to us the true value and comfort of the Green Glens complex where the Show has been domiciled since its inception.

Former Ireland Rugby International to open 35th National Dairy Show

With the 35th National Dairy Show just around the corner we all eagerly await Ireland’s largest indoor agricultural show which takes place in Millstreet annually in October.

This year former Ireland rugby international Mike Ross will perform the honours when he officially opens the Show which promises something for everyone in the farming community. Mike, the son of Frank and Patti Ross, is a graduate of dairy farming having grown up on the home farm near Ballyhooly in North Cork where he still inspects the progress of the Convamore Herd when he gets a chance on his visits home. Mike’s early rugby career started with Fermoy underage, the club that his father Frank played with distinction for many years. From there he progressed through the UCC ranks before joining Cork Con and then onto a professional contract in England with Harlequins until 2009 when he returned to Leinster where he played for 7 very successful seasons. After 61 Irish caps and two Six Nation Championships Mike retried from professional rugby in 2017, where he has certainly earned the title as one of the greatest scrummagers that Ireland has ever produced. Mike has also generously signed one of the new Irish jerseys, which only officially go on sale at the end of this year and together with a signed ruby ball and a hamper of goods, all will be up for grabs as door prizes on the day of the Show.

Preparing Cows for a Dairy Show

2014-11-27 Ear to the Ground - National Dairy Show 05This evening Ear to the Ground (RTÉ ONE) had a feature from Millstreet: “Darragh McCullough explores the National Dairy Show in Millstreet, Co Cork, where he meets the Murphys who stay up all night to keep their cows and calves clean for the parade ring.
