A Snowy Morning – wind, rain, and cold to come

Today is St. Hilary’s feast day, traditionally the coldest day of the year. So it was not unexpected that we awoke to a blanket of snow in town as well as the hills around us (it’s the second snowy morning this winter). We may get a few more flurries as the day goes on, but it could also be rain :-/.

But please be aware that the forecast for the next few days isn’t great. Tomorrow afternoon until Thursday is going to be very windy and wet too, and after that it will get cold barely getting above freezing during the day, and getting even colder at the weekend. More details below:

John Kelleher’s Leprechaun

John Kelleher captured a leprechaun under a rock near the summit of Mushera  mountain, and agreed only to let the creature go if it gave him a purse of coins. The little man told Kelleher that if he dug where he stood, he would find the purse. Kelleher let the leprechaun go, stuck a stick in the ground to mark the position and went home to find a shovel. Returning a short time later, the man found hundreds of identical sticks all stuck in the earth around the area. (the date of this is unkown)

2014-12-25 Mushera Christmas Day Climb 05 - Some of the group at the topA lovely bright crisp morning greeted climbers for the annual Mushera Christmas Morning Climb, and a crowd of well in excess of a hundred took to the mountain to create an appetite for their Christmas dinner (or get away from the cooking of it!). This year the proceeds were in aid of the newly formed Aubane Community Alert, who added: “Many thanks to those who donated. The fund is still open. Sponorships cards still available”.

This year the proceeds are in Aid of Aubane Community Alert. Sponsorship Cards will soon be available from Sonia O’Riordan Secretary or John F Kelleher Chairperson any Aubane Social Club member. First Snowman of the Winter !

The first snows arrived about 6:30 on Thursday morning. There wasn’t much in town, but there was a nice bit on the hills. One of our braver readers made a snowman and took some nice photos in the morning sunshine on his way to work at the top of Togher. Click the images for full size

Aubane Christmas Party

On top of Mushera with a GoPro

Last week we had a video of a drone over Mushera, now there’s a video of someone with a GoPro video camera on top of Mushera. The video starts looking down at the gates of the Country Park, then turns around and up to the mound of stones at the very top which in older days held a wooden cross. then down to the cross overlooking balllinagree, down to the other St.John’s Well (there’s 3 wells on Mushera) and on…

Open-Air Dancing at The Mushera Platform next Sunday September 7

The Last Open–Air Dancing Event at The Mushera Platform for 2014 will be held this Sunday Sept 7 between 3.00 and 5.30.

Music by C and M Sound.

The All Ireland Hurling Final will also be shown on the Day.

The first item on my list of things to remind you of this week ,is of course the Willie Neenan Memorial 10K road race which goes ahead this Friday evening June27th. Runners starting at 7.30 Walkers starting at 6.30. All the finer details are on the website . Registration for those who havent done so on line is at the GAA Hall prior to the start. And no buggies please.
Lots of fun to be had and lots of cash prizes to be won. So get ready to pay homage to Willie Neenan, the man who made the Millstreet Athletic Club world famous.

St. Johns’ Day – Mass and a Dance on Mushera

2014-06-24 St.John's Well Mass reminderMass will be celebrated at St John’s Well Mushera tomorrow night being the 24th June 2014 which is the feast of St John’s the baptist. It starts at 8.00 pm and the weather forecast is sunny with temps of 21 Degrees…

After mass the neighbouring parish Ballinagree will host a platform Dance just down the road at 9.00 pm til 11.00 pm to live music by Jerome Coakley…It is along time ago since a dance was held at this platform after the mass at St John’s Well. Well Done to Ballinagree in organising this…-(John F. Kelleher – Aubane FB) … and the weather promises to be good 🙂

Also, this is bonfire night, so expect to see some bonfires on this lovely summer evening.

MonsterMac Sports Winner

Pictured right is 2014-04-26 Donal Kelleher from Aubane who won the Sports Section of the MonsterMacDonal Kelleher from Aubane who won the Sports Section of the MonsterMac today.

The MonsterMac was organised by St.John’s GAA Club, and based out of Millstreet Country Park, and included mountain running, cycling and canoeing, and in very wet and windy conditions this morning.

Fondest Greetings Dear listeners and I wish you all the very best on this beautiful warm sunny Tuesday morning.

The Two-day Walking Festival was  a wonderful success on Saturday and
Sunday last. The organisers left no stone unturned to make it an enjoyable
event for all those taking part.  Registration took place at the Wallis Arms
Hotel on Saturday,with, over 60 walkers taking on the long trek to
Ballyvourney and lots of others engaging  shorter routes.

On Sunday the walks were centred at the lovely Country Park, again over
routes to suit all needs. Well done to all involved.

King Mahon’s Rock

2014-04-19 Booklet for the unveiling of the monument at King Mahon's Rock - front pageThere will be an unveiling of a monument on Holy Saturday, 19th April 2014 at 2pm by the Kilcorney Historical Society.

King Mahon was the older brother of Brian Boru and King of Munster when he was assassinated in 976 on Mushera Mountain at a place traditionally marked by ‘Mahon’s Rock.’

Brian’s avenging of his brother’s killing was the opportunity for him to replace Mahon and go on to become the most famous High King of Ireland.

The event is to complement the millennium celebrations of the Battle of Clontarf.

Moira O’Brien, Director of the Clan O’Brien Foundation, will unveil the monument and deliver a talk on behalf of Lord Inchiquin, the direct descendant of Brian Boru and Head of the O’Brien Clan.

The venue is about 2 miles from the Kerrymans Table on the ‘Brandy Road’, off the Butter Road at Togher (turn off the Butter Road at the highest point on the side of Mushera)

Where the Road Takes Me – King Mahon’s Rock – Documentary on C103 Now Until 8pm

John Greene presenter  of the ‘Where the road takes me’ programme on our local radio station C103, has recorded a feature on the local landmark “King Mahon’s Rock”, which includes amongst others interviews with Kilcorney and Millstreet people.

King Mahon’s Rock is where Brian Boru’s older brother King Mahon was killed in 975 AD, which led to Brian Boru becoming King of Munster, and later High King of Ireland. A monument is to be unveiled at the spot this year for the 1,000th anniversary of the Battle of Clontarf.

King Mahon’s Rock is located on the side of Mushera, near the highest point of the Butter Road to Cork from Millstreet.

The programme goes to air next Sunday April 6th at 7pm, on C103 FM, and can also be heard online at c103.ie

Last Friday was Daffodil Day and collections were made in aid of  Irish Cancer Society, with outstanding results.

Collectors in the town brought in €3,370, and the Coffee morning at the GAA Hall yielded €845.

The organisers would like to say a sincere word of thanks to all those who support their efforts in any way. And our full admiration goes to the organisers themselves.

And Mother’s Day went on for the whole weekend 🙂

To-day is the First of April and April is full of things to do, the long evenings  giving more daylight hours.

Record Rainfall over Winter

In an article in today’s Examiner, stats are given for the rain that fell on us this winter:

– Records were broken during the last three months when 216% more rainfall than average fell at a monitoring station in Millstreet, Co Cork.
– A total of 998.4 mm fell (3ft 3.31) during December, January and February.
– The monitoring station has been in operation there since 1986.

Concluding Our Survey Regarding LTV Signal

We now share our final communication regarding our recent trip throughout the area so as to gauge the quality of the LTV on-air signal.   From the Sandpit House we proceeded into the Rathcoole area where the signal varied and within the village itself we did not succeed receiving any signal.  Onwards to Kilcorney where on the higher ground areas we received an excellent signal.   As we travelled towards Tooreenbawn and Mushera and into quite a good stretch of the Aubane area the signal was good.   Top of Tullig got a splendid signal as did the area right down to Tullig Cross on Drishane Road.   The town itself, Priest’s Cross and some areas east of the town all got good signals.  The town gets its signal from Channel 35.   A perfect signal along Clara Road and Mount Leader.   Thus ended our brief research tour of the Duhallow and Sliabh Luachra areas.   I’ve shared these findings so as to give an idea of where best the LTV signal is available.   Best to have the advice of one’s own Television Installer to determine the best way to obtain the best signal in your area.   As indicated, transmission is available on two channels – Channel 30 (from Carriganima area) and Channel 35 (from western side of town).   Very clear transmission of the weekly LTV2 Millstreet programmes is of course available on the Millstreet website www.millstreet.ie .   Special thanks to Dan Joe Kelleher of LTV for sharing his expertise, time and technical equipment in helping to determine the quality of the LTV signal in our brief survey and thank you for reading our reports on the findings.  (S.R.)

Local Television Signal….Common Questions

As promised we share the first part of our findings following a trip throughout the Duhallow and Sliabh Luachra areas yesterday.

One of the most Common Questions being asked about LTV reception:

“We received quite a good reception on air up to last year…Now we no longer seem to be able to receive any signal.  How do we now continue to receive the weekly broadcasts?”

One of the main reasons for this is that we used a VHF transmitter from the Mushera area for years.   Use of VHF was no longer permitted from last year thus losing that signal which used to travel far to areas like Taur, Newmarket and could even be received on high ground in areas like Dingle and Castleisland.   So now we can only use the UHF signal which does not travel as far as VHF.  The new signal we’ve been using in this area is Channel 31 UHF from the Carriganima area (This is on a different frequency from last year).   However, lots of areas in Millstreet Town and to the west of the town and beyond could not avail of that signal so Dan Joe Kelleher of LTV suggested that a transmitter placed to the west of the town could pick up the Carriganima signal and redistribute it to a large section of the town and to a large wide area to the west of Millstreet including Gneeveguilla, parts of Rathmore, Knocknagree, the New Line (Rathmore to Sandpit House Road) etc..   Although we did not have funds for this development we decided in the spirit of providing to a wider audience not only LTV2 Millstreet but also LTV1 and the Sunday Specials, to personally finance this extension of the on-air signal.   We were also very fortunate to receive the supremely kind permission of a local family to transmit from their setting in ideal conditions.   Use of the electricity in constant use for this facility is gauged by meter.    The signal from this new transmitter located to the west of the town is proving most successful and is available on Channel 35 UHF.   When LTV is not being transmitted Dan Joe broadcasts the Sky Channel EWTN  (the religious channel) on a 24/7 basis.    Tomorrow we shall share how we found the quality of the signal in the areas we visited and we also explore the very real advantage of online transmission as illustrated by the success of the placing of our weekly LTV2 programmes on You Tube (dedicatedly uploaded by Bernard) making the broadcast available worldwide.  If you have any questions please email millstreetmuseum @eircom.net …. Mushera Christmas Day Climb 2013

The annual Christmas Day Climb of Mushera Mountain took place this morning at 10:30am, with another large crowd heading to the top, this year in aid the Courtmacherry life Boats. It was the best weather for many years with not a cloud in the sky, not a puff of wind, and a light covering of snow underfoot, made for a happy atmosphere. All the climbers have sponsorship cards, and the proceeds are going to the Courtmacherry life Boats who themselves will go out in any kind of weather to save lives at sea. LTV2 Programme 222 (Number 2 of 2013/2014 Season) Now Online

Programme 222 which will be broadcast Tonight Thursday 21 November at 10.00 is now online. You can now watch our Second Programme of the New Season right here at millstreet.ie or on the LTV2 Facebook Page and this Programme will be repeated next Sunday Evening November 24 at 8.00pm

To receive reception on your Television one needs to retune analogue settings (available in menu “settings”).   When scanning is complete one will now have the new channel – either UHF Channel 30 or UHF Channel 35 (or both in certain areas of Millstreet).   All this depends on how strong the signal is in any given area.   The UHF Channel 30 signal comes from the Carriganima direction whereas the UHF Channel 35 signal comes from the western side of Millstreet Town.  This is now saved and is presently transmitting the EWTN (Religious) Channel.  [read more …] “LTV2 Programme 222 (Number 2 of 2013/2014 Season) Now Online”

John Tarrant’s Coverage of Monster MAC at Millstreet Country Park

Brian Murphy wins Monster MAC MILLSTREET’S Brian Murphy delivered a compelling performance to land the overall prize in the Monster MAC adventure race hosted in Millstreet Country Park on Saturday. Conditions were tough over the Boggeragh circuit as the diverse course offered up plenty of challenges for the 250 strong entry drawn from all over the country.. A steep off road 8km run to a high point of 644m above sea level to the peak of Musheramore, followed by a 25km bike trail and engaging in a kayak race in Millstreet Country Park added to a fitting test of surivival before Brian emerged to the fore much to the delight of family and supporters. Participants extended plaudits to the organising committee headed by Marie Griffin from Kilbrin coupled with the favorable weather and the hospitality of Millstreet Country Park added to the outstanding staging.
