Recognition for Tidy Town Groups

Kanturk Mallow Municipal District held a reception in recognition of the achievements of the groups from Millstreet Town and Kiskeam Village. Chair of Kanturk Mallow MD Cllr Timmy Collins noted the dedication of each Tidy Town group, “On behalf of the Members of the Kanturk Mallow Municipal District and staff I would like to express my thanks to all the volunteers in each of our Tidy Towns groups throughout the District. Their dedication and personal sacrifice in making our towns and villages better places to live and work in is inspiring. Tidy Town Groups and their communities add significantly to the quality of what we have in Cork County and their ongoing work is proudly supported by Cork County Council. This Municipal District will continue to support their work through the funding allocated to groups in the Community Funding Schemes, which will be advertised again early in 2018…” – read the full article by Cork Co. Tidy Towns Present Awards

A feel good factor surrounded the annual Millstreet Tidy Towns Awards presentation at a pleasant function hosted in the Clara Inn. The enthusiastic Millstreet Tidy Towns Association earned an impressive six marks increase to 314 for 2017, those marks are hard earned, the Millstreet Association thrilled with the rate of progress. The Millstreet Awards function saluted local effort, best Commercial Frontage was awarded to Noel C Duggan with Reen’s Pharmacy highly commended. Taking the Best Town House was Lawrence McSweeney, Drishane Road; earning high commendation were Michael and Joan Sheehan, Minor Row – article thanks to John Tarrant

Best Garden
Best Household

The awards ceremony will be held in The Clara Inn, Wednesday 18th October @ 8pm. We would love to see as many as can make it for this wonderful night. It is a chance for us as a community to celebrate our Bronze Medal again for 2017 in Tidy Town competition as well as our own unsung heroes from home. See you all there.. Tidy Towns Report 2017

Many Congrats to Millstreet Tidy Towns Association who have increased their score by six points this year at the National Tidy Towns Awards, and retained their Bronze Medal. Millstreet is getting closer to the top table every year, with overall winners Birdhill only 18 points ahead of us. A huge congrats must go to all that helped in any way through the year, and to O’Keeffe’s SuperValu Millstreet for helping them to make our area a nicer place to live in. Anti Litter Competition for 2017 begins next Monday

This year’s Anti Litter Competition is beginning next Monday 8th May 2017. As you are all aware I am sure, Millstreet Town won 1st Prize in Category A last year. So will we make it two in a row. I reckon we can do that no bother. So grab your sweeping brushes, shovels, gloves and bin bags and as always get out and clean, clean, clean. The evenings are only fab all this week so no excuses. Why not rope in a couple of the neighbours on your street and make a right good go of it. You will be done in no time. I will post the schedule of the particular areas that will judged just as soon as I get them. Any groups or any volunteers that would like help or a loan of equipment for their litter pick up please do not hesitate to contact me here on the page and I will sort out gear for you. Inspiring Enthusiasm Demonstrated by Team Millstreet Clean Up Today

True Community Spirit was superbly demonstrated today during the nationwide Tidy Towns Clean Up Project. To illustrate the inspiring enthusiasm clearly in evidence we visited The Square where many splendid Volunteers prepared to travel to various parts of Millstreet to participate in the major Clean Up. Then we went to Tanyard Wood when a wonderful Team including many young people completed a magnificent clean up project. Sincere congratulations to All who so very enthusiastically participated. Millstreet Tidy Town Award Ceremony

Millstreet Tidy Town Association is holding an awards night in the Clara Inn, Millstreet, on Wednesday night at 8pm. This is an especially great celebration for us this year as we hail the return of a Bronze Medal back to Millstreet from the National Tidy Town Competition, and this is after receiving first prize in the Cork County Council Anti Litter Competition.

It should be a fun filled evening with prize giving for Best Commercial Premises and also Best Garden and Best Household.

Cork Fairs Well in 2016 Tidy Town Awards

Conor Nelligan – Heritage Officer / ‘Ireland 2016’ County Coordinator has shared the following very interesting information re Medal Winners in Cork County at the recent National Tidy Towns Competition. (S.R.)

The results for the National Tidy Towns Competition have been recently announced and are available to view on the Tidy Towns website by clicking here. The overall winner for 2016 was Skerries in Dublin with a score of 327 but it is clearly visible that the towns and villages of County Cork are getting closer and closer to the mark, with the County this year having picked up 19 medals:

Tidy Towns: 6 extra points, and a Bronze Medal

The results of the Tidy Towns Ireland Competition were released yesterday in Dublin, and Millstreet Tidy Towns continued on their upward curve, gaining six point this year (on top of 5 points last year), and seeing the return of a Bronze Medal. Great credit is due to all that put in lots of effort this year and in the past:

Millstreet Tonight Has Won First in Category A for Cork County Council Anti-Litter Challenge 2016 Announced at County Hall Occasion in Cork

Hot off the Press from Cork City!

Áine Murphy – P.R.O. Millstreet Tidy Town Association has just emailed us the following truly uplifting News:

“Just to let you know Millstreet won First in Category A for Cork County Council Anti Litter Challenge 2016. We are very proud of this achievement. I will hopefully have photos for you over the weekend from this occasion from the representatives of the Millstreet Tidy Town Association that attended the event this evening in County Hall. This is a huge achievement Millstreet Town and a testament to the community spirit of our fair town,

Millstreet Tidy Town Association will receive a cash prize for achieving first place in this competition which is much needed as we rely heavily on donations, sponsorship and grants to enable us to achieve many of the projects around town. To mention a few such as all the planting that is done in the town every year also the water butts that have been implemented in the last 2 years.

None of these things are possible without the help of the people of Millstreet, FÁS, Cork County Council. There is a huge amount of work that is involved achieving a result like this and it takes a lot of volunteers. We would like to take this opportunity to applaud them all.

As a side note we have also received invites to the National Tidy Town Award Ceremony which will be held in The Helix in Dublin on the 26th of September. Whilst we are not guaranteed an award merely by just receiving an invite I would hope at the very least that we will be receipt of acknowledgement of the effort that is being put into our town through the Millstreet Tidy Town Association. I will keep you posted on this.

So for tonight we can celebrate an amazing win at County Hall!”

Transition Year Students studying Barn Owls and Kestrels

Millstreet Tidy Town Association are delighted to announce that this year again Tony Keneally, Wildlife Biologist will be running a project with the Transition Year Students of Millstreet Community School. The Transition Year Students have made Nest Boxes for Barn Owls and Kestrels and the Transition Year Students will endeavour to study these magnificent birds. [read more on the project]

Welcome to 2016

Happy New Year to Everybody. Apologies for the lack of communication for last number of weeks. This is now to end. Back to regular updates and posts. I can here all the shouts of joy from here. So what better way to start a New Year than to reflect on the achievements of the previous year. There is so much to choose from. Well we had a very successful Anti Litter Challenge campaign this last year. We have an eye on first place for 2016. Then there is also the various projects that Tony Keneally, Wildlife Biologist has been heavily involved in with both the National and Secondary Schools. Also brilliant results in the National Tidy Town for this past year, only narrowly missing out on a Bronze Medal. Millstreet won a Pride of Place award in October. Cartoon Characters “Tom & Jerry” at Mill View!

The very colourful scene at Mill View, Millstreet 2015 where the wonderfully creative John Lehane of Main Street has recently introduced a new "Friend" for Tom the black cat which has "resided" on the frontage of the cream house. Due to the work of Colman Culhane and the very dedicated Millstreet Tidy Towns Association Tom the black cat has been admired by many. Now "Jerry" the mouse takes up residence next door and even salutes Tom! Great to see such splendid features put in place adding to the uplifting atmosphere of Millstreet. A Delighted Tidy Towns Secretary Encourages Local Assistance Following Uplifting Success in this Year’s National Tidy Town Competition

Ladies & Gentelmen,

As Secretary of Millstreet Tidy Towns & Tourism Assocation we are pleased to attach this years Adjudication Report for the National Tidy Town Competition. We are extremely proud of our achievement of 302 points which is a fantastic 5 points improvement on 2014.
To put this in context, 302 points is only 21 points behind the overall winner – Letterkenny @ 323 points.

Success at this scale will only be maintained with the participation of the whole community.

From the attached report (which in fact has already been shared on our website “Tidy Towns increase by 5 points!“) you will see that the Tidy Town Competition is much more that just picking up litter.

Our Association needs help from a broad skillbase to achieve our goal of being the overall National Tidy Town winner.

Your assistance in any form, large or small, will help us to achieve this goal.

Tidy Towns increase by 5 points !

Millstreet Tidy Town are very proud to announce that this afternoon in The Helix in Dublin, it was announced that Millstreet received 302 points in the annual Tidy Town competition for 2015. This is an increase of 5 points on last years results. This is a huge achievement. So may thanks to all in all involved, big and small efforts made a lot of difference. Whilst we bask in the glow of this brilliant result, we must also bear in mind that we have plenty more work to do to prepare for next year. Only 20 points behind the overall winner in our category – Listowel. These points are precious and hard to achieve. Also we were only 1 point off receiving a bronze medal. So just think of what one small thing that you may have done that could have contributed to gaining that extra point. We are capable of most definitely achieving a Silver medal next year. So get the thinking caps on. New volunteers are always welcome, just send us an email, pm on Facebook or tweet if you like. Remember Tidy Town is all year, not just for the Summer. New Tidy Towns website

The new Millstreet Tidy Town Association website is now available. Our sincerest thanks to budgetwebsites.ie without whom this would not have been possible. Especially to Niamh and her team. So we are well and truly up and running. Our facebook page over the last 2 weeks has proved a huge success. Our website is millstreettidytown.ie will hopefully be the same. New Tidy Towns Facebook Page

Millstreet Tidy Town Association are happy to announce that we have launched a new Facebook page. It will make it easier for the people of Millstreet to keep up to date with all up coming activities. Also new the new Millstreet Tidy Town website (millstreettidytown.ie) will be available in the coming weeks. So please everybody get liking the page. The first Litter Pick Up will be on Thursday 23rd April at 7pm meeting in The Square. Hope to see lots of new and old faces.

Anti Litter Challenge 2015

Millstreet Tidy Town Association would like to invite one and all to take part in the Anti Litter Competition for 2015. It is potentially worth €1750 to the Millstreet Tidy Town Association. What has that to do with me I hear you ask ?

The annual spend for the Millstreet Tidy Town Association per annum is roughly between €9000 to €10000. This prize fund would go a long way to help aid our efforts in maintaining our beautiful town.

The first adjudication will take place on the 27th of April, so that only gives us 3 weeks. Everybody can help, even just by tidying up outside our own houses and surrounding footpaths. There will be Litter Pick Ups organised in the coming weeks. We would really appreciate if one and all got involved.
It won’t take long if we all do a small part. Why not get together with your neighbours and organise your own Litter Pick Up in your street.

We have a beautiful town and would love to be able to showcase this. Millstreet has won first prize in this competition in previous years. It would be great if we could do it again.

Roger and Wendy Cresswell have spent the past eleven very fruitful year in Millstreet. At the very welcoming McCarthy's Bar, The Square, Millstreet on Thursday, 2nd April 2015 Millstreet's Men's Shed and Millstreet Tidy Towns Association made a number of presentations to the wonderfully popular Couple as they soon return to the UK. Roger was one of four dedicated people who founded Millstreet Men’s Shed and his very professional advice and work with Millstreet Tidy Towns was hugely appreciated. Woodland Habitat Study

Yesterday afternoon the Transition Year students of Millstreet Community School started a woodland habitat study in the woodland at the back of the Community school.
The Millstreet Tidy Town Association have organised in conjunction with Mr. Derry Morley, for a Wildlife Biologist, Mr. Tony Keneally to come and facilitate this study to be done. This will be happening for the next 3 to 5 weeks with the Transition Year Students.
Their work will involve mapping the woodland habitat and ecological experiments and activities. Their aim is to map and setup a management plan for the woodland area. The best plan will be presented to Millstreet Tidy Town committee for submission with this year’s entry. We wish them luck.

New Nest Boxes by our Men’s Shed

10th March 2015, the Millstreet Mens Shed presented members of Millstreet Tidy Town association with 12 nest boxes.

The nest boxes which were beautifully built by the Men’s Shed and will be strategically located around the greener parts of Millstreet. Mainly the Town park, Clara Rd, Community school and perhaps even across from the Men’s Shed so the lads can observe their handy work.

There are 3 different types of nest boxes involved and a huge amount of effort and craftsmanship was placed into the creation of these nest boxes.

More information will be available on nest boxes on Millstreet Tidy Town website, which will be up and running in the coming weeks.
