Summer 2014 Reading Challenge at Millstreet Library

Cork County Library is eager to support the work done in schools during the year to encourage reading and develop reading skills. We feel it is important that children maintain these skills through the summer and develop further their love of reading.

Here we note just some of the many young artists at work on the project this Wednesday evening.   Librarian, Breda O'Leary arranges a wide range of very interesting activities in the Library throughout the year.  (S.R.)

Author/Singer/Composer Gerard O’Callaghan Provides a Superb Bealtaine Presentation at Millstreet Library Today

Author/Singer/Composer Gerard O’Callaghan from Mallow presented an hour of superb delight today at Millstreet Library as part of the Bealtaine Festival. Gerard is also a long established member of Mallow Pipe Band.   A number of his marvellous stories have been broadcast on RTÉ’s “Sunday Miscellany”. The appreciative audience truly enjoyed Gerard’s songs and most enjoyable readings from his recently published book “Memories and Make Believe”. Gerard is pictured here with John, Breda (to whom we extend sincere thanks for organising the marvellous event) and Kathleen.   (S.R.)

Book Reading by Celine Kiernan

Author Celine Kiernan who writes fantasy novels for young adults will be doing a reading in Millstreet Library this Wednesday at 1.15pm. She is best known for The Moorehawke Trilogy. New Book: The Bard – Seán Riobaird O Súilleabháin

The Aubane Historical Society will be launching their latest book entitled “The Bard – Seán Riobaird O Súilleabháin” in the library on Saturday 18th August at 8pm. The Bard was a myhtical figure in Millstreet’s history and this is the first account of his life. It’s a great story, and is written by his great grandson Barry Keane. Tea and biscuits will be served in the GAA club afterwards.

From the back cover: John Robert O Sullivan made Millstreet famous during the Land War. His fight with the landlords and land agents led to intense repression in Millstreet between 1881 and 1891. At one stage the small town of Millstreet had more than 80 armed police to enforce the law. Magical Experience at Millstreet Library Today

Magic Circle Magician Supreme, John Francis, thrilled an enthusiastic young audience at Millstreet Library today with his annual magical presentation co-ordinated by wonderful Librarian, Breda O'Leary. This is one of many exciting activities at the Library over the Summer of 2011. (S.R.)

“Ciorcal Chomhrá” Every Wednesday at Millstreet Library

Every Wednesday at Millstreet Library from 11.00 a.m. until 12.00 noon an enthusiastic group of people interested in the Irish Language assemble for an hour discussing and exploring different interesting issues of Irish culture and more. Others are more than welcome to join irrespective of one's standard of spoken Irish. Here we view four of the very dedicated members of the "Ciorcal Chomhrá" (Discussion Circle). What’s on in Millstreet Library

Cork County Council have sent out a number of tweets today listing some special events that are coming up in Millstreet Library in the next month (July/August 2010). These are:

  • Thursday 22nd July & Thursday 29th 3pm – 4pm Felt-making workshop with Amanda Wright. Numbers limited, phone: 029-21920
  • Conversational Irish: held every Wednesday at Millstreet Library from 11am – 12pm. Everybody Welcome. Beidh “Comhrá as Gaeilge” sa Leabharlann, Sráid an Mhuillinn, gach Céadaoin, 11am go 12pm. Fáilte roimh gach Éinne.
  • Storytelling with Kathleen for 3-7 year olds takes place every Saturday morning from 11am-12pm. Children should be accompanied by an adult.
  • Children’s Book Club meets once a month on Saturdays from 12:00-1:00pm. Suitable for children aged 10-12 years. Next meeting Sat Aug 14 at 12 noon.
