Today, Wednesday 15th May 2019 marks the exact 26th Anniversary of the magnificent Eurovision Song Contest held on Sat. 15th May 1993 at 8pm in Millstreet’s superb Green Glens Arena where Noel C. Duggan and Family accorded a royal welcome to the world on this hugely historic and highly significant event. Launch of Millstreet Credit Union History Booklet 1968-2016

“Radio Treasures” on CMS Visits 1951 Tonight at 10pm
Our 10pm feature tonight (Tues. 4th Sept. 2018) recalls events from 1951 on “Radio Treasures” on Cork Music Station. We also hear the superb pipe music as played by Con Houlihan of Cullen Pipe Band (as we extend Kathleen and Damien very Happy Wedding wishes) in Killarney earlier this year. We reflect on the very successful Carriganima Fun Run of last Saturday. We chat about our 1910 historic photo of Millstreet (from the late Mary Cronin Collection at Millstreet Museum kindly presented by Breda and Tommy Sheehan of Australia and Millstreet). We’ve lots of musings and music plus songs from artists like André Rieu, Nat King Cole, Judy Garland, Ann Shelton, The Seekers, Les Paul & Mary Ford plus Hymns from Medjugorje. And there’s more…lots more! Do join us from 9:30 to 11:00pm (Irish Time). We thank Seán Murphy (formerly of Mill View, Millstreet) for providing us with this wonderful picture which will evoke many special memories. Seán also provides us with a list of the names that he knows in reference to the photograph. The Principal Teacher, Patrick O’Doherty is present in the image. In 1953 the location of Scoil Mhuire, Millstreet BNS was on Clara Road opposite to the Presbytery. This week on Where the road takes me , John Greene begins a three
drama/documentary entitled – ‘The Sinking of the Lusitania – Myths,
mysteries and the West Cork Connection’.
On Friday May 5th, 1915 the passenger liner Lusitania was sunk off the Old Head of Kinsale by a German U-Boat, with the loss of 1,198 lives. But was she as innocent as we were led to believe.
* In programme One – We look at the background to the sinking and
how the Cork passengers on board fared, especially Julia o’Neill from
Rosscarbery, whose poignant story continues in programmes two and three.
* In programme two , and in dramatisation format, we feature the
role played by Courtmacsherry lifeboat on the day, using the exact words

Superb Cine Film Footage of Millstreet in 1960s Shared by Colm
We sincerely thank Colm O’Connor who lives in Rotterdam and who originally hails from Millstreet for so very kindly sharing quite fascinating film footage of the Millstreet of the 1960s. Colm’s father, the late Eddie O’Connor, captured a variety of very interesting scenes with his cine-camera and here we view the footage which includes a Corpus Christi Procession and playing ball on a traffic-free Drishane Road. Among the others appearing on this hugely popular footage: John Coleman, John Lucey and Anthony Forde. Tubrid Holy Well in the 1950s
Patrick W. O’Leary of Louisville, USA had in August (as well as others) suggested that an opportunity should be given to people nationally and internationally who may at any time wish to contribute towards the upkeep of Millstreet Museum and Millstreet Website …. and to this effect we have arranged to set up an electronic system with the Bank of Ireland here in Millstreet (where our Museum/Website account exists) whereby anyone can transfer a desired donation to the account by just quoting at one’s own Bank our relevant numbers which are: IBAN No.: IE22 BOFI 9058 0334 0531 43 and the BIC No.: BOFIIE2D. Millstreet “Tóstal” of the 1950s
We thank Margaret and John Kelleher of Mount Leader, Millstreet for sharing with us a wonderful historic image of the Tóstal in Millstreet c.1957 where a very large number of Pipe Bands visited Millstreet on the occasion. I was six years old and can recall the huge excitement there was throughout the town and of course the splendid musical sound of the various Bands. Our image from a Ballybunion publication shows the Ballybunion Pipe Band pictured at The Square, Millstreet. Please note Tom Radley’s Forge with the wheel against the front wall. Clara Hillfort
While most of us have been to the top of Clara Mountain, many don’t know that on top, the remains of an ancient hillfort lie under the heather. It can be made out in the photo above which shows Clara with Millstreet in the background. The hillfort is described in a new archaeological site: The Atlas of Hillforts of Britain and Ireland, which maps for the first time all the ancient hillforts across the landscapes of Ireland and the UK:
“Contour fort positioned at the summit of Claragh Mountain, overlooking the town of Millstreet. The circular enclosing element measures 122m in diameter and comprises a single bank of loose stone with no discernible ditch feature. It occupies a total area of 1ha. Possible original entrance at WNW. Up to four breaks in the bank have been created in recent years. Near the center of the interior, a sub-rectangular enclosure, 19m E _ W, 14mN _ S, is defined by a setting of stones. A cairn, 8m in diameter and 0.5m in maximum height is incorporated in to W section of the hillfort bank. Sections of peat at summit suggest an even blanket of peat approximately 0.2m in depth. Some heather growth in interior. There have been no archaeological investigations of this hillfort.

Terence McSwiney Historic Badge at Millstreet Museum
On this Sunday, 21st August 2016 President Michael D. Higgins will officially open the new state-of-the-art Independence Museum at Kilmurry (near Lissarda) following his delivery of the Michael Collins oration at nearby Béal na Bláth (at which Millstreet Pipe Band perform annually). The original Kilmurry Museum was named the Terence McSwiney Museum because of his close connection with the area. Several years ago before the official opening of Millstreet Museum in 1980 I recall visiting that impressive Museum where Mrs. O’Sullivan gave me such a wonderful welcome and provided a superb guided tour of the splendid Centre. To mark this Sunday’s historic event we here feature from our Lucey-Coleman Collection at Millstreet Museum a truly historic Terence McSwiney & Family Badge – part of a larger selection of important medals and badges. We hope to share images from this Sunday’s Kilmurry event at a later point. Incidentally, due to further very generous contributions towards our recent annual church gate collection for Millstreet Museum and Millstreet Website – our final amount has reached a much appreciated €1,820.00 for which we are truly grateful. Renowned Poet, Bernard O’Donoghue of Cullen & Oxford will perform the unveiling to honour this superb gentleman – Pádraig – whose great love of Cuilinn Uí Chaoimh and the promotion of true Irish Culture and Heritage was universally recognised. Jerry Lehane’s Superb Images of a Snowy Square of Bygone Days
- We thank Jerry Lehane of Ballydaly and Minor Row for these two wonderful images of a snowy Square in the Millstreet of the 1960s or 1970s. It was the late Tadhg O’Driscoll who took the truly historic pictures. We’ve been trying to read the Posters on the window of McCarthy’s Bar – One reads “Whist Drive”. And note the VW car owned by the Healy Family outside the Jeweller’s Shop. The petrol pumps outside Lucey’s Garage are also visible. We welcome the suggestions as to what Christmas it is exactly.
