Congratulations to Jodie O’Callaghan, Millstreet Community School TY student who has been selected to represent Local Enterprise Office South Cork in the senior category at the National Final of the Student Enterprise Awards Competition 2019/2020.
Her product is the JK9, a pet-themed wall hanging for keys and dog leads. (The name is a combination of Jodie’s initial and K9 as an abbreviation of canine.)
To qualify for this level of the competition, Jodie from Bolomore had to demonstrate exceptional enterprising skills and create a business plan. This all led to a product that is so popular, Jodie’s biggest problem now is keeping up with the demand. Due to the current situation and restrictions put in place to tackle the Corona Virus situation, the National Final scheduled for Croke Park was cancelled but a national judging panel are carrying out a paper based judging exercise for all national final business reports and winners chosen. An awards ceremony to present prizes follows later in the year.
Meanwhile, anybody interested on obtaining Jodie’s Pet Hanger creation can do so by contacting her on Instagram jk9_2020.
Leslie Matson is among that select group of authors who have immortalised in literature the rich culture of the Blasket Islands, along with others such as Robin Flower, Carl Marstrander, Peig Sayers, Tomás Ó Criomhthain and Muiris Ó Súilleabháin.
He was initially drawn to Corca Dhuibhne in 1954 to improve his Irish so he could register as a teacher, staying with the legendary “Kruger” Kavanagh.
Never a man to do things by half, he embedded himself in the community as well as in the culture of the west Kerry Gaeltacht.
His social research on the 125 former inhabitants of the Blasket Islands stands as a valuable resource to scholars for posterity.
He befriended Mártan Ó Catháin, a nephew of Máire “Méiní” Dunleavy (1876-1967) who had been the Blasket midwife for 36 years.
Méiní, not accustomed to the name Leslie, hilariously called him “Italy” and that was how local people greeted him, “Conas atá Italy inniu?”.
Encouraged by Mícheál de Mórdha, Bainisteoir Ionad an Bhlaoscaid, he wrote Méiní, the Blasket Nurse, which was published by Mercier Press in February 1996.
Apart from his social research, he was a renowned linguist, teacher, chorister and a much loved family man. He enjoyed speaking Irish, French, German and Russian, and was widely read in English and French, quoting the classics from memory.
He began his teaching career in Aravon School in Bray followed by Villiers School in Limerick, however most of his teaching career was in Newtown School, Waterford where he taught mainly French and was Senior Master.
From 1977 he spent six years as headmaster of Sligo Grammar School before teaching in Millstreet Community School. He retired at 65 (~1995) and returned to live in Waterford where he continued his work on the Blaskets and on the archives of Newtown School.
To mark International Women’s Day we’d like to invite active retired ladies to a Coffee Morning in Millstreet Parish Centre on Wednesday 4th March between 10.30am and 12 noon.
It’ll be a chance for us to have a chat about changes in society through the years and how they have affected women. We’d love to see you there!

Millstreet Community School Parents’ Advisory Committee is raising money for the Computer Room Refurbishment. The current Computer Room is outdated and the PCs need to be replaced. We hope to replace PCs with Chromebooks and create learning pods as per the plan above. Microsoft Office 365 across the school. Teachers and students are now collaborating in the digital space using cloud technology. The proposed new layout of the room will provide us with a space where students can collaborate with one another in groups during class periods. Their work will then be available to them on the cloud for future consultation and for revision purposes. Help us to realise this vision and future proof our school!

The RTÉ Archives have recently added a new video titled “Industry in Millstreet 1987“. It was a dark time for the town after Apple Computers had left Millstreet in 1985, leaving us with high unemployment, and the Community Council were trying to encourage businesses back into Millstreet. There are interviews with the late Ken Brennan and Sgt. Seán O’Sullivan, as well as clips from around town. Click here to watch the video. Also below are some images from the video, with lots of locals recognisable:
