Eily’s Report – 3rd March

Dia is Mhuire díobh go léir a cáirde and welcome to my report.

Hello everybody and welcome to the month of March.

Aaaah the month of March. Back in the day it never had a very good name. Cold and bare at a time when we were hanging out for an improvement in the weather. The years before the comforts of life that we have today. Central heating. Washing machines, heated motor cars, frozen foods. Also the month when the traces of the flu’s and colds of  the previous months were still around. As mad as a March hare was a very popular adage  and it was used to describe lots of things from a straying cow or any animal to rain and the wind. It could be a lean time of year.  The growing season was only beginning and the past season’s supply had to be carefully handled to make it stretch until the new crops came along. In June. Shops back then did not sell soft veg like cabbage or fruits.  So it was up to every land owner to have their own. Turnips were a great stand by. They had a long life. We fed  them to the cattle and they also made a welcome veg for human consumption. Potatoes also had to be carefully monitered to make them reach the end of the season. Potatoes needed extra care to save them from the frost and from the rats which were never far from the store.
