Eily’s Report – 17th February

Dia is mhuire díobh go léir a cáirde  and welcome to my report.

It maybe only for a few minutes or a little more, in between showers, but the warmth of the sun is a joy. The changes come so fast that if you blinked you’d miss it. And that would be a real pity because there is healing for mind and body in  a spell of the sunshine as well as hope for the future. Driving out a couple of days ago the sun was shining and I could see the grass in fields yielding to the gentle breeze, signs of new growth. Buds are appearing in the garden and in spite of all, Mother Nature is busy getting ready for the year ahead. Rabbits were gone from the scene in the past number of months but they are making a come back. Last week Nora had her daughters three children for one of their regular sleep overs and when they got up in the morning there was a larger than life fox in the garden just outside the window. He was in no hurry, giving them the chance to have a good view of him before he sauntered away.  What a lovely thing that was. As long as I’m in the world I never came that close of one. We rarely saw a fox back then, except for a fleeting glance. But sadly we knew they were there when a fine fat goose or turkey or any fowl for that matter was gone, and nothing but a bunch of feathers to show for it. Fox hunting was a great sport back then. Every farmer kept one or more  sheep dogs and terrier and on Sundays after Mass and the dinner, friends would meet up and head off through the fields to places where foxes were likely to frequent. A crafty terrier soon found the scent and the search was on. There were no restrictions about crossing other peoples fields and it was freedom at it’s best. The wily Madra Rua rarely was ever caught but the near thing stories that were told in the evening were always worth an ear.
