Millstreet Library Knit & Natter Group Supports Dementia Care in Bantry Hospital

A heartfelt initiative recently came full circle when Teresa Bohane, Head Dementia Nurse at Bantry Hospital, put a call for help – asking if knitting groups in Cork County Libraries could create “Twiddle Muffs” for patients living with dementia.  Rising to the occasion, Millstreet Library Knit & Natter Group answered with enthusiasm, crafting an impressive collection of 40 – 50 twiddle muffs.

Their beautiful creations were officially presented last Friday at a special event hosted by Cork County Council Library & Arts Service, as part of their Age-Friendly programme.  The occasion also marked the launch of the second edition of Come Sit awhile, a collection of dementia-friendly stories.  Attendees enjoyed a series of readings, including the winning entries from the Age Friendly short story competition.

Fiona Foley, Senior Project Manager at the HSE’s National Dementia Office, spoke at the event, highlighting the therapeutic importance of storytelling and reading aloud for people living with dementia.

The presentation of twiddle muffs was a highlight of the afternoon, with the Millstreet knit & Natter group receiving well-deserved recognition for their dedication and creativity.  They were treated to a warm & welcoming event, complete with refreshments and a celebratory atmosphere.

Millstreet Library was proud to coordinate the group’s participation, including arranging transport via the excellent CART (Carriganima Area Rural Transport) service, which ensured everyone could travel comfortably to Bantry for the event.

A sincere well done to all involved in making this meaningful collaboration a success.  We look forward to the next inspiring project.

Improving Tourism in North Cork

I am working with Cork County Council, Pure Cork and Failte Ireland in trying to get some more traction on Tourism in North Cork.

Failte Ireland in conjunction with Cork County Council have already developed two itineraries initially – see links below – and want to do more…

Breathtaking Scenery & Wonderful People in North Cork

https://www.purecork.ie/plan-your-trip/inspiration/breathtaking-scenery-wonderful-people-in-north-cork

Awaken Your Senses in North County Cork

https://www.purecork.ie/plan-your-trip/inspiration/awaken-your-senses-in-north-county-cork

I have gone through the above itineraries, and I have noticed we have lots more attractions such as your own we could include.

In that light, I am hoping you can register the Kerryman’s Table/The old Kerry Butter Road on the on Pure Cork website by clicking on the following link – Adding Your Event, Festival or Business | Pure Cork

You can also register on Fáilte Ireland’s Trade Portal – https://services.failteireland.ie/

By offering all what have on offer in North Cork, we can make it a very attractive tourism spot.

If you have any queries, please get in touch.

Eily’s Report – 15th July

Dia is Mhuire díobh go léir a cáirde and welcome to my Report.

Oh the good old summer time, the good old summer time, strolling by the shady lanes with my baby mine. Maybe that’s a bit outdated for someone of my age, but a fine spell crosses all divides and maybe my feet may not skip along to a lively tune as they used to, believe me the mind never gives up, never fails to rise to the beauty of a fine day ,better still an fine spell. The world is full of things to do when the weather is good. Too good sometimes I suppose when crowds flocking to  the  seaside at the weekend had to be halted because of traffic jams which would block our safety services if there was an emergency. Thankfully there was no emergency and a great time was had by all. Our Active Retired members took a one day  bus-trip to County Clare. Where they enjoyed a cruise on  the Shannon and visited the famous Foynes Flying Boat Museum. These Flying Boat services were world renowned during the second World war. It was the hub of Aviation  during the years 1939/45. Over the years it has been visited by heads of state, film stars etc. such as JFK. Bob Hope, Eleanor Roosevelt.  It’s also the birth place of the much enjoyed Irish Coffee.  Our members were invited  to try their hand at making one. It’s all shown on screen where the visitor can learn the story of this important place in our country. Well done to our organisers who booked this interesting place for their one day outing which they enjoyed in brilliant sunshine.
