Millstreet in the 1950s Depicted in Kevin’s Photographs

We thank Kevin O’Byrne of Skibbereen and formerly of West End, Millstreet for three superb images depicting Millstreet of the 1950s and 1960s.   Kevin, who is a renowned Historian, very kindly recently presented these images to Millstreet Museum.  Tap on the pictures to enlarge.  (S.R.)

This truly wonderful image photographed from West End, Millstreet looking up Main Street, as the very impressive An Tóstal parade of 1957 progresses on its way to Millstreet Town Park direction. While we recognise many of the faces especially the Flag Bearers and Millstreet Pipe Band there are many others who are not so recognisable. Feel very welcome to indicate the names of people whom you recognise and we shall be delighted to share.   Just email millstreetmuseum @gmail.com .
West End, Millstreet in the 1950s possibly as one observes a car outside the Convent Gate and the wall at the entrance to Clara Road and which is now the location of Centra Supermarket.  Pat O’Sullivan of Carrignavar believes that judging by the make of the car – our photo is more likely to date from the early 1960s.   And Ted Neville suggests that it could well be the early 1970s!
This superb group photo dates from the early 1960s and shows the huge attendance of men attending the annual weekend Redemptorist Retreat in Limerick with participants from Millstreet Parish and beyond.
