Eily’s Report – 6th December

Dia is mhuire diobh go leir a cairde and welcome to my weekly Report.

Yes. yes, and thanks for asking, I passed my NCT. My little Renault Clio sailed through it and the nice man in charge even conveyed me to my car to present me with my papers. So wish me safe motoring, till the next time.

The joy of seeing our town all lit up for Christmas is so uplifting. They were plagued by doubt as the months went on but old traditions are hard to kill and God Bless our people they forged ahead in spite of all. The crowd was bigger than ever, many from foreign soil as Liam Flynn addressed them and introduced Sean Radley pressed the switch following a slow count down from ten. It turned our Town Square into a wonderland of lights and colour, while a clear moon played it’s own part as it shone down from a clear night sky on a calm cold night. Then there was a flurry of excitement when Liam said that Santa would be coming on any moment. Next up was our Millstreet Pipe Band, (including Padraig O Driscoll) followed by a brightly decorated  convoy drawn from our Vintage Club and ending with a surprise of surprises, Santa himself arriving by Air Ambulance.  (A replica mounted on a trailer may I add). The wonder in the faces of the little children and indeed grown–ups was a joy to behold. Friendly Sergeant Paul Lynch and his colleagues were on full alert to see that nothing marred the joy of the occasion.  No words of mine could do justice to the event. Following three years of a break our Mná na hÉireann did us proud. Needless to say they got great help from many men, but they were the ring leaders who put all the wheels in motion. This year we missed the one and only Noel Buckley, who is temporarely incapacitated and wish him well.  Following  his  hip  replacement he will be back with us again DV. Now that our town lights are in full bloom it’s up to us all to add our own sparkle to the grand return of Christmas cheer following all the woes of the awful Corona Virus.

Cullen and DISTRICT Special Needs Association. Annual Christmas Mass and Party

Cullen and DISTRICT Special Needs Association.

Annual Christmas Mass and Party

The season of goodwill began in earnest in Cullen last Saturday Dec.3rd, when we hosted our 39thAnnual Christmas Mass and Party. It was disappointing that this successful and such an enjoyable afternoon had to be abandoned in 2020 and 2021 in the best interest of all during those unusual COVID 19 times. However it was great to be back again, this party is the highlight of our year’s activities and has been part of our lives here in Cullen over 40 years. Weather conditions were excellent and we were thrilled with the turn out from afar as Tarbert, Mallow and Kanturk to, Newmarket, Millstreet, Gneeveguila, Knocknagree and Cullen. A large number of our special friends with their families, friends or carers attended.   Many friendships are renewed and new ones formed at this annual get together. It was a thoroughly enjoyable afternoon.

Incidentally Sat. Dec. 3rd, was a very special day – the United Nations sanctioned day, celebrated internationally to promote the rights and well-being of persons with disabilities, focusing on social inclusion, and is in its 30th year.

Mass was celebrated by Canon John Fitzgerald, and the local Choir added to the celebration with appropriate Christmas hymns and carols. Guests were then treated to festive refreshments and wonderful disco music kick-started the season of goodwill for all present, whose energy and enthusiasm could put many to shame. Our wonderful DJ, Sean Collins contributed in no small way to the success of the party. The excitement continued as each guest then received a Christmas gift. We were delighted to have a visit from the Kanturk/Millstreet branch of the Red Cross offering hand massage and nail painting to all guests, and this was very much enjoyed and appreciated.

Great credit is due to the organising committee, the hall committee, and the many wonderful helpers who did trogan work behind the scenes to ensure that everything was in order for the evening.

Many thanks to all who came and supported the afternoon to make it such a success.

Cullen and District S.N.A. wish all their special friends, supporters and sponsors all the Joys and Blessings of Christmas with the best of health and happiness in the New Year

 Moira O’Keeffe (Sec.)

Magical Atmosphere at Millstreet’s Christmas Lights Launch 2022

It truly was a Sunday evening to remember on 4th December 2022 when a wonderful programme of festive events got underway following the official turning on of the superbly colourful Christmas Lights at The Square, Millstreet.   Little did I imagine that as MC Supreme, Noel Buckley introduced Steve Collins and his Son to turn on the Lights in 2021 that this year I would be accorded such a magnificent privilege.   Following the switching on of the Lights this year’s wonderfully Festive MC, Liam Flynn, introduced the Parade which included Millstreet Pipe Band, the Christmas Millstreet Vintage Club, Santa and superb singer, Ger O’Hanlon.  At a later point the wonderfully dedicated Millstreet Christmas Lights Committee will upload a full report on the great success of the overall event blessed with kind weather and a very impressive attendance.   Creating this spectacular Christmas magic throughout the town is quite costly and the Committee is most grateful for the support already received but would like to give the opportunity to everyone who may wish to contribute towards the special fundraising which greatly helps to defray the significant costs.   To access the link just click on the following: https://www.idonate.ie/cause/MillstreetChristmasLights Here we share four images of the event kindly shared by Photographer supreme, Neil O’Connor presently at home in West End on a visit from the USA.  We shall later feature further selections of images plus links to excellent videos by Tom Corbett and Fr. James McSweeney.  Tap on the images to enlarge.  (S.R.)
