Where The Road Takes Me – Sunday 13th Feb.

Because of Covid-19 restrictions and lockdown, many centenary events were cancelled last year, but will be carried over to this year.

On this week’s edition of ‘Where The Road Takes me’, John Greene looks back at the IRA’s heaviest defeat in a single engagement, during the War of Independence.

An informer, complacency, a catalogue of errors and strange decisions, a total disregard for the rules of war and illegal court-martials, all contributed to a battle that virtually wiped out the East Cork Flying Column and left deep scars on the local community, for years afterwards. Denis Leamy ( Chief Executive Cork ETB) and John Fitzgibbon, (Director of FET with CETB) were welcomed on Friday, 11th Feb. 2022 to Millstreet FET (Further Education and Training) Centre at Main Street to view the Centre and its facilities. Also in attendance were Nuala Glanton, Adult Education Officer and Sadie Allen, Area Coordinator for North Cork. They were welcomed by Marie Twomey , Resource Worker and Centre Manager. Also in attendance were Tutors: Teresa Barrett, Nora Keane, Úna Murray and (not photographed) Siobhán Henley, John Ryan and Ita O’ Rahilly. Two other Tutors who work in the Centre are Elsa O’Callaghan and Paul O’Flynn. Two members of Millstreet Community Council, Chairperson Noel Buckley and Áine Collins welcomed the visitors.  As part of their visit, Denis and John viewed the Educational Learning Hub in Drishane Direct Provision Centre which hosts classes for the Asylum Seekers and is run and funded by CETB and Millstreet FET centre. The biggest news is that there will be an Official Opening of the Centre in the near future as we moved in here during the Covid lockdown and did not get a chance to do this. All learners will be invited to this event for a celebration and presentation of QQI Certificates.   We thank Marie Twomey for this superb summary and share the following selection of images from the very impressive occasion.
