Eily’s Report – 30th April
Dia is Mhuire díobh go léir a chairde, and welcome to my report.
Tomorrow Wednesday is the first of the Merry Month of May, and by all accounts it promises to be a scorcher. The year so far has been like the doctor ordered it. Early growth, sunny days and nights of welcome rain until Hurricane Hannah hit the country last Friday. The warnings of red and yellow, sent us all into a frenzy battering down the hatches and fixtures were cancelled all over the place.
And come it did just as severe as the experts said it would, but when we got up next morning it was as if it never happened. There was no great damage to be seen. We were so lucky around here, because in other places, they did suffer a lot of damage, trees down and thousands of people were without power for days, but best all, there was no loss of life. It only goes to show the quality of our homes and places today. In the past places would be strewn with debris after a storm and in some cases, roofs of houses, and sheds blown down. By and large, we are well prepared to stand up to the challenges of today’s weather. Baoichas le Dia.
Sliabh Luachra Cycling Club weekly update
The long evenings and decent weather is providing a great opportunity for both the Couch to Ring of Kerry group and the leisure cyclists within the club to get some decent spins in, including some undertaking the Ride Dingle Sportive and the sportive in Killavullen on Sunday last. One of the key local leisure sportives is the Twin Peaks Challenge on 12th May next organised by Killarney CC.
Our annual Tour of Sliabh Luachra will take place on June 30th at 9:00am from Teach Iosagain.
A group of 12 juveniles and 7 adults took part in the 54th Annual John Drumm Memorial Cup races in Currow last Sunday. Days like this the Club bus really pays off. This was the biggest representation SLCC had at any race to date and bodes well for the future. Four of our juveniles came home with placings, Sean P Fleming, Nicholas Buckley, Amy Fleming and Kate Murphy. Keenan Dennehy had his first day out racing – we had a few mechanicals and punctures along the way for good measure – well done to John Breen and his team at Currow CC for providing such an array of events at all juvenile levels.
From an adult racing perspective it’s great to see Paudie Keane and Sean Dineen back racing in Currow. Anthony Tancred, Johnny R O Sullivan, Richard Cleverly, Denis O Connor and Dan Murphy all rode well and finished safely in their various races.
Next week the racing focus moves to the Kanturk 3 day – with racing for Juveniles and Adults kicking off on Saturday.
Preperations are ongoing for the Inaugural Sliabh Luachra CC Youth Races for Juniors, U16, U14 & U12 Boys & Girls on June 16th at at Knocknagree.
Training for Juveniles interested in either leisure or competitive cycling continues every Saturday at 9am.
