Millstreet Monument Committee – Preparation for Easter Commemorations

This being the centenary year of the 1916 Rising, the Committee wish to acknowledge and commemorate the Irish Volunteers from the four Companies who mobilised during this Easter period. The committee will unveil two plaques on the monument base on Easter Sunday 27 March 2016: one to acknowledge the visit of Terence MacSwiney who attended the inaugural meeting of the formation of the four Companies of Irish Volunteers – Keale, Millstreet, Mushera and Rathduane on 1 November 1915. The second plaque will remember these Companies that mobilised and were ready, willing and waiting to answer the call to arms on Easter Sunday 23 April 1916.

In preparation for this historic event the monument in the Square needs to be cleaned and the lettering restored to its original condition. Therefore the Committee are appealing once again to the generosity of the general public for funding to undertake the necessary specialised work needed to ensure the monument is in pristine condition for Easter Sunday 2016 and for the decades ahead.
