Cork 20 Rally Report

The recent Cork 20 Rally produced mixed results for some of our local crews that made the short trip to Macroom which is now the new Home for the Rally to compete in what was a very tough and challenging Event, Saturdays stages were in the Kilmichael, Inchigeela and Kilnamartyra areas while the stages on Sunday were more Local to Millstreet with the Butter Road, Mushera and Mullaghanish stages all being used, the weather was sometimes very mixed particularly on the Saturday Morning loop and this made driving conditions quite challenging for all the Crews which as a result brought quite a few retirements along the way, from a Millstreet point of view there was a good battle in Class 10 with only just over 18 sec covering the top 3 Crews in the Class with Bandons Victor Beamish in an Vauxhall Nova topping the Class with our local crews filling the next 4 places with Denis O`Brien/Ryan O`Brien Opel Corsa finishing just 14.7 sec behind while 3rd in the Class were Kevin Hickey/Derry Healy Ford Escort Mark 1 a further 4 seconds back, rounding off the Top 5 in Class 10 were Sean Moylan/Denny O`Riordan in a Peugeot 306 who were followed home in 5th by Mike P Kelleher/Iarla McCarthy in there Mark 2 Escort,Sean Moynihan/Liam Brennan in another Mark 2 Escort took 3rd in Class 12 and as a result are Class 12 Champions in both the Irish Tarmac Championship and also in the Southern 4 Rally Championship as well in what has been a remarkable year for the talented Young Man from Millstreet,Todd Falvey/Andrew Cronin in there Porsche 911 were 3rd overall in the Historic Section and finished first in Class C1 while John Murphy/ Eoghan McCarthy finished 5th in Class 20 with there Subaru Impreza, unfortunately there was no luck for Dan Kelleher/Gavin Downey Ford Escort Mark 2,Denis Buckley/Declan Casey Ford Escort Mark 2 and John O`Sullivan/Derry Long Ford Fiesta who all failed to finish what was a very tough Rally. The Event was won by Sam Moffett in his Ford Fiesta who by just starting the Rally finished off a remarkable year by winning the Irish Tarmac Championship to add to his National Tarmac and Forestry Titles he already has under his belt as well from the 2017 Season, while Josh Moffett Ford Fiesta crashed out on the last stage while fighting for the lead with his older Brother which left Alastair Fisher in his Fiesta finishing in the runner up spot while Kevin Eves co-driven by Macroom Man William Lynch won the National Rally in his Toyota Corolla and also the Tarmac Championship Title in the National Section as well in the process,Keith McIvor won the Historic section in his Ford Escort while Jenna McCann was the top Junior Competitor and as a result clinched the Junior Tarmac Championship in Cork,Munster Motor Club led by Paul Browne and his hard working Team laid on a very challenging Route with top class stages used that provided tough driving conditions which were enjoyed by both Competitors and Spectators alike, out of the 104 Crews listed to start the Event 63 Crews made it back to the finish on Sunday Evening in Macroom.

Class Success for Local Crews at the Killarney International Rally of the Lakes

There was success for 2 local Crews last weekend at the Killarney International Rally of the Lakes which was the 3rd Round of the Irish Tarmac Championship, Sean Moynihan driving his Ford Escort Mk2 co-driven by Liam Brennan came out on top of Class 12 after a dominant performance, this was a repeat of the performance that Sean had when he also won his Class on Round 2 of The Championship The West Cork Rally back in March,Sean also finished 9th overall in the National Rally and is now sitting in 3rd Place in the Overall Rankings of the Modified Class in the Tarmac Championship, there was also success for Denis and Ryan O`Brien in there Opel Corsa who had a great Rally and at the end of the 2 day Event they had a convincing win in Class 10, Pat Sheehan in his Renault Clio had a good Run and finished 4th in Class, while Mike Dineen/Declan Casey in there Corrolla Twin Cam had a good Rally and went on to finish 5th in Class but there was no such luck for Local Man James O`Brien who was calling the Notes for Roy White in his Fiesta WRC who retired while Leading the Rally towards the end after hitting a Chicane, this left the door open for Sam Moffett in his fiesta R5 to take the Victory with Robert Barrable finishing behind in his Hyundai I20 R5 with Stephen Wright finishing 3rd in another Fiesta, the Rally was held in sometimes very challenging Conditions over the 2 days and used some famous Stages like Molls Gap,Healy Pass and Caragh Lake. Billy Coleman Takes Part in Circuit De Ja Vu Event in Killarney

Billy Coleman the three times Circuit of Ireland Rally winner was reunited with a Rothmans 911 during Circuit Deja Vu in Killarney over the Easter Weekend, the Porsche 911 he drove is now owned and beautifully restored by John Mulholland, a County Antrim motor trader, the Porsche was a genuine Porsche 911 similar to the car that Billy drove for the Rothmans Team in the 1985 season.
Billy’s first Circuit win was in 1975 in an Escort RS1600. He repeated the win a year later in an RS1800 but it was another eight years before Billy, this time at the wheel of an Opel Manta 400 and with Ronan Morgan as his co-driver sprayed the champagne again at the finish of the five-day marathon, for the Circuit De Ja Vu Run last Sunday Ronan was back in the hot seat again to accompany Billy.

The Circuit De ja Vu is the brainchild of both Alan Tyndall of RPM Motorsport and Beatty Crawford who was a former Circuit of Ireland winning Co-Driver back in 1971,the Event was established to Celebrate the Glory Years of Rallying in the 70s and 80s and this Event without doubt captured that with some great Cars and Drivers from the that Period coming from near and far to be part of the Celebration, this was the second year that the Event was Ran and like last years Event which was also based in Killarney it was an outstanding Success.

Billy Coleman was not the only Millstreet Native to take part in the Circuit De Je Vu over the weekend,Conor Falvey had French Champion Bernard Beguin behind the wheel of his beautiful Porsche for the Run while his Brother Todd Falvey had Saeed Al-Hajri who is a former winner of the 1989 Cork 20 driving his Car which was also a Porsche along the Route as well, both Al-Hajri and Beguin are former Rothmans Teamates to Coleman so it was fitting that they all got together along with another former Rothmans driver from the same Era Jimmy McRae who was driving a Vauxhall Chevette,Former World Champion Stig Blomqvist was another famous driver to do the Run in an Audi Quattro while Donagh Kelly and Denis Biggerstaff each wheeled out a Metro 6R4 for the day,the other Millstreet Drivers that completed the Course included Kevin Hickey with co-driver Matthew Twomey in there beautifully turned out Replica of Billy Colemans 1979 Circuit of Ireland Ford Escort, and Ballydalys Denis Moynihan also completed the Course in his immaculate Mark 1 Escort, the Run which was based at the Malton Hotel departed at 10 am on Easter Sunday to tackle some famous Rally Stages along the way such as Molls Gap, Healy Pass, Cods Head, Ardgroom, and Killmackillogue and finished back in the Malton Hotel at around 4.30pm,the Event was a great Success and was enjoyed by both Competitors and Spectators who turned out in quite large numbers.

Below are the Local Crews who took part along with some Famous Stars as well and in Order they are

Kevin Hickey/ Matthew Twomey Motorcraft Mark 2Ecort

Denis Moynihan Escort Mark 1

Bernard Beguin/Conor Falvey Posrche 911

Billy Coleman/Ronan Morgan Porsche 911

Saeed Al-Hajri /Todd Falvey Porsche 911

The boy from Millstreet who became the King of Rally

Billy, John, and Paddy Coleman

In the history of rallying in Ireland, one name stands out above all others for the respect in which he is held and the ability he demonstrated behind the wheel of the cars — predominantly Fords — that he drove.

That person is the remarkable Billy Coleman, the man from Millstreet in County Cork who even today, long after he hung up his driving gloves, remains the stuff of legend … read the full article from today’s Irish Examiner

very dry day which made for sometimes quite dusty conditions, once
again there were some Local Competitors taking part with last years
winners Desi Henry and Ballydaly Co-Driver Liam Moynihan leading the
Field away, while they didn`t repeat last years Victory this time
around they still finished a fine 4th overall at the end, Tom
Murphy and his Co-Driver Kieran O`Donoughue in there Ford Escort Mk2 had a great Run and at the end of the Rally they emerged victorious in Class 10,Grace O`Brien from Dromtariffe was the Co-Driver in the Class 9 winning Vauhall Nova which was driven by Ruari Maguire from Tyrone, John O`Sullivan from Boherbue driving his Fiesta finished 5th in Class 16,Ballvourneys Ciaran Creedon driving a Honda Civic and Co-Driven by John Murphy had a great run and finished 2nd in Class 11F,
Danny Creedon and Derry Healy in there Subaru Impreza had to
retire on Stage 2 due to a Mechanical Issue but returned under
Rally 2 Rules to have a great run and finish 6th in Class 15,there
was no luck for Ger Cullinane who had to retire after 4 Stages
while going well in his Toyota Starlet,The Rally had 81 starters
which is a record amount of Competitors taking part in a Forestry
Event in recent years and was won by Keith Cronin in a Fiesta R5
who was in turn followed Home by Josh Moffett Fiesta R5 in second
place with his Brother Sam Moffett Fiesta WRC finishing in 3rd
place overall in what was a closely contested Battle at the Top End
of the Field. The 2wd Battle was won by David Crossan in a Ford Escort MK2,Out of the 81 Crews that started the Event 65 made it back to the Finish Line after a tough days Competition.

Success for Local Rally Crews at the West Cork Rally

Last weekends West Cork Rally produced some great results for some of our local crews that made the trip to Clonakilty to compete in what was a very tough and challenging Event, there were Class Wins for three of our local Crews who competed with Mike P Kelleher/Iarla McCarthy emerging victorious in Class 10 in there Mark2 Escort, Sean Moynihan/Sean Nolan in another Mark2 Escort took the Class 12 Honours while John Murphy/ Eoghan McCarthy came out on top in Class 20 with there Subaru Impreza, there were also some great performances from other local Crews including Denis O`Brien/Ryan O`Brien Opel Corsa who finished 3rd in Class 10 who in turn were followed home by Denis Buckley/Declan Casey in there Ford Escort while Todd Falvey/Peter Falvey in there Porsche 911 were 5th overall in the Historic section on there return to competition following a lenghty break from the sport, unfortunately there was no luck for Dan Kelleher/Gavin Downey Ford Escort who retired with Mechanical Woes late on Sunday while luck also deserted Pat Sheehan/Liam Dennehy Renault Clio and Colin Moynihan/Sean Collins Honda Civic who both failed to make the finish. The Event was won by Donagh Kelly/Conor Foley in there Ford Focus WRC who took a record breaking fourth consecutive victory, Josh Moffett Ford Fiesta was second overall and won the hotly contested R5 catagory while Kevin Eves co-driven by Macroom Man William Lynch won the National Rally in his Toyota Corolla,Barry Jones won the Historic section in his Ford Escort and Kieran Reen in his Honda Civic was the top Junior Competitor.Frequent changeable weather during the Event made for very challenging driving conditions but as always Cork Motor Club led by Greg McCarthy and his hard working Team which included Danny Creedon/Derry Healy Subaru and Conor Falvey Porsche performing 00 Sweeper Duties along the Route Ran a Top Class Rally which was enjoyed by both Competitors and Spectators alike.
