Connie Kelly And Morty Cronin

In my flights of fancy the memories come back
To me of when Connie Kelly the dog man ran the Millstreet dog track
And Morty Cronin the hare driver drove the lure around
May they rest in peace now in dead people’s ground.

The last men to run the Millstreet greyhound trial track to the reaper have gone
The well known and well loved characters Morty and Con
The Millstreet greyhound trial track is now a thing of the past
And only the memories of what was does last.

Millstreet Greyhound People

To win a feature race at the Cork track for them was a huge thrill
Dan Collins and his wife Bridgie ace greyhound handlers from Cockhill
The dogs they owned and trained always well turned out and always hard to beat
They became known for training dogs far distant from Millstreet,
So many famous dog handlers in Millstreet Parish and Town
Where Donie and Jeraldine O Mahony, Dan, Dave and Paddy O Keeffe they carved their own renown
And Paddy Cashman from Tullig Hill great dogs did train and own
And the Duggan brothers Con, Andrew and Tim as a greyhound family were well known,
Con Kelleher and Sheila and their friend John from Cockhill enjoyed some great success,
Paddy Casey, Tommy and Kitty Hennessy their race winners brought them happiness,
Denis Corkery and Noreen and Noreen’s father Pat dogs with them a way of life

Eddy And Delia Murphy Of Ballydaly

2015-11 Eddie Murphy, BallydalyEddy and Delia Murphy still breeding and racing greyhounds their dogs Ballydaly’s best
And their speedsters not found wanting when they are put to the test
Still winning races at the Cork track and as greyhound handlers their reputations grow
Their Ballydaly dogs have been winning open and graded races for as long as one would care to know.

It has been some while since Eddy had Poundy’s gift in the Oaks in Dublin at least five decades ago
Where the Ballydaly speedster her true worth did show
2015-11 Delia Murphy, BallydalyThen the great hope of old Duhallow she seldom knew defeat
In Cork track and in Dublin she was the one to beat.

Horse Racing: Andrias Guerin won his first race over hurdles in the GROLSCH HCP CHASE  5500m at Wincanton (GBR) (3:10pm) on Hobb’s Dream last Friday March 9th. He spent the whole race at the back of the field, made his move with four fences to go, jumped the last in second (photo right), and just pipped it by a head. “Fabulous ride Andrias Guerin” – the commentator [See the video of the race at the bottom of this post] [read an article in the SportingLife.com]

He followed that up the following day with his second win over hurdles in the 5:25 at Chepstow (UK), a 2m 4f race, winning by half a length on “Meet me at Dawn”, sent off at 8/1. He rides again today in the 4:30 at Plumpton, another hurdle … three in a row, what are the chances … [not to be as he was raised 9lbs since his race on friday and fell two from home … breaking Andrias’ collar bone 🙁 ]

Dan O’ Donoghue

2014-12 Dan O'DonoghueIn Ireland Jack Mullan was known as Mr Coursing when i was a young man
On looking back the Seasons in time that a lengthy span
But to a man from Millstreet Town such a title now does belong
When it comes to coursing dogs and coursing Dan O’ Donoghue never wrong

Three times Irish Coursing tipster of the year quite an amazing feat
When it comes to coursing dogs and their breeding as a judge the one to beat
He is now Ireland’s Mr Coursing something worthy of a boast
To the genial chap of Lackabawn we ought to drink a toast
