“A Rebel’s Cry” – Cork All-Ireland Song by “Loose Connection”

The superby talented Duhallow based “Loose Connection” Band have just released a truly fantastic song entitled “A Rebel’s Cry” in honour of Cork’s All-Ireland Football Championship Match with Down at Croke Park on Sunday, 19th September 2010.    This is a splendidly lively and hugely appropriate song with Seán Moylan as main vocalist.   It is performed with mighty enthusiasm by the very popular Band.    Hopefully it could very well feature on RTE’s “Up for the Match”.   Judge for yourself as you can now view the excellent video and hear the brilliant song. Now available on YouTube on  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fHszrnhKhtk (Google YouTube Music and search for A Rebel’s Cry by Loose Connection.)   “A Rebel’s Cry” is written by Seán Moylan, produced by Neil Moylan at EQUINOX STUDIOS and performed by “Loose Connection”.   Members of the Band: Cian Daly, Denis Meade, Neil Moylan, Mick Tobin and Seán Moylan.  Having viewed the video and heard the song it’s surely a case of “Up Cork!” … and… “Every Success on 19th September”.   (Seán)

Cork v Dublin

The banter has been good ahead of the All-Ireland semi-final in Croke Park today. We’ve a few Jackeens in our midst, and the Dublin flag in the picture above has been lucky to stay in flying for the last few days. There’s a big crowd gone up to Croker for the day, the anticipation is building and the action gets under way in the next few hours time. May the best team win, and may that team be Cork!!

Final score Dublin 1-14 Cork 1-15. Victory for Cork, TBTG ;). The final is on September 19th.

Beaten by Dromtarriffe

Millstreet Junior Footballers were beaten by Dromtarriffe in the Duhallow Junior A Football Championship tonight in Cullen. Drom’ will hardly ever have a better scoring day, as nearly everything they kicked went over the bar, while most of the Millstreet Kicks ended up either  wide or in the goalies arms, in what was a very frustrating evening of football for the Millstreet supporters.

Tadgh Collins got Millstreet off to a great start with a goal in the first few minutes, [read more …] “Beaten by Dromtarriffe”

According to the Cork County Minor Board:

Cork Cruise through

It’s been a good weekend for Cork football fans in Croke Park. The seniors pulled away in the second half to beat Roscommon by 1-16 to 0-10, and now face Dublin in the All-Ireland semi-final in three weeks time. While earlier in the day, the minors scored a goal in the last kick of the game to beat Armagh by 3-11 to 0-19.
Millstreet were represented in Croke Park by the Comhaltas Group who provided the musical entertainment at half time in the Cork game (see the pic on the right), just as they did for the National League Final back in April.
But us Cork fans will be very happy that Kerry were dethroned yesterday by Down, and that we won’t have to try to beat them in Croker … that and the face that we won’t have to listen to the Kerry boys and girls for the Summer either :P

Donncha Team Training at Town Park

Renowned Cork footballer, Donncha O’Connor was at Millstreet Town Park this evening (29th July) to conduct a very comprehensive training session with Millstreet GAA Juvenile Club members – the Under-14s and the Under-16s.   We were also introduced to the new addition to the local Juvenile Kit – the “Under Armour Skin” – clothing which keeps sportspeople cool in the Summer and warm in the Winter.   Many thanks to Michael for alerting us to this Town Park happening.  (Seán)

Hurlers crash out

Freemount 3-9 Millstreet 1-11

Millstreet crashed out of the Duhallow Junior Hurling Championship tonight after as Freemount came from behind in the second half to battle into the next round.

The game started well for Millstreet with two unanswered points in the first five minutes, but they were quickly wiped out when a long ball into the Millstreet square saw the defenders and goalie hesitate for a second as the Freemount forward raced in and stuck away a simple goal. Magnificent Millstreet are crowned county champions

Millstreet U14 Hurling County Champions (click for full size photo)

Report from John Tarrant

Millstreet delivered a terrific display of passion and pride to lift the Co. U14 B Hurling Championship title after overcoming Ballinhassig 2-15 to 3-4 in Blarney last evening.

Laced with surperb skill and brilliant touches, Millstreet allowed their hurling do the talking over the hour. Indeed a highly motivated Millstreet took control of the proceedings from an early stage and availed on the accuracy of Seán Óg O’Connor and Thomas Walsh to shoot pointed frees.

Ballinhassig managed to find their footing and a goal cut the arrears 0-7 to 1-2 at the break. Three Millstreet points upon the resumption were cancelled out by another Ballinhassig goal. With the game in the melting pot, Millstreet held a facility to step up a gear where their speed and first touch hurling put Ballinhassig on the back foot. Munster title for Ellis

Congratulations to the Mark Ellis who played at wing back for Cork Intermediate hurlers in their victory over Waterford in the Munster Final tonight. While Cork trailed for most of the game, they never gave up and finally pulled ahead through a Bill Cooper point in the 59th minute before John Halbert sealed the victory with an injury time point. For the commentary of the game as it happened, see the Official Cork GAA Twitter page. For the lineup of the teams go to the Cork GAA Website.

Thanks be to god Waterford didn’t beat us twice in one week!

Millstreet 0-15 Kanturk 0-13

Millstreet had a hard fought victory in the Duhallow Junior Football Championship after their superior fitness saw them hold out for a two point victory after extra time in Banteer tonight.

Kanturk looked by far the better team in the first twenty minutes and they led by six points to two, but Millstreet came into it, scoring four unanswered points before the teams traded points to leave the half time score at seven points apiece.

Kanturk began to dominate the second half but failed to turn their posession into scores as the Millstreet defence did well under pressure not to give away frees in dangerous positions, while the Kanturk forwards squandered a good few chances. The Millstreets forwards were starved of decent posession with which to score as the play constantly broke down once it passed midfield.  Five minutes remaining and Kanturk scored a couple of points and led by 11 points to 9, before the Millstreet line made switches which began to tell and a pair of last gasp long range points in injury time pushed the game into extra time. Cork star John Coleman still motoring on

An All-Ireland minor medal in 1968, a senior award in 1973 and a club junior championship memento last season.

Save Clare’s audacious breach of that which had been ordained to be since 1936, football at senior level down in Munster has been unashamedly incestuous in nature. The Godfathers of Kerry and Cork have, for over fifty years now, bred legions of children of God whose collective footballing talents have ensured that the country’s southern provincial crown has been a real family affair. The twin giants have dwarfed their neighbours’ achievements with a measure of comfort that has come nowhere near to being matched in any other province in the country in modern times.

Yet, almost paradoxically, such is the nature of gaelic games, that the long standing Godfathers of the game down south have been forced to share their parental duties of propagating that winning feeling. By definition, they have been forced to sit in the losers enclosure too. The Rebel county and the Kingdom have learned how to lose as well as win. Disappointing Night for GAA Teams

2010-06-26 Michael Vaughan scores a goal against Tullylease

Tonight in Kanturk, two local teams were defeated in their respective championship games.

In the Duhallow Junior B County Qualifier Final St Johns were beaten by Kilbrin on a scoreline of 2-8 to 1-6.

Afterwards in the Junior A Hurling Championship, Millstreet were defeated by Banteer on a scoreline of 1-18 to 0-12. A sharper Banteer side deserving their victory due to their ability to take their chances throughout the match. The first half was relatively even though Banteer lead by 1-9 to 0-8 at the break, but Millstreet will rue their many missed chances in the second half while their game when they still had a chance to get back into the game, while Banteer seemed to score with every chance.

Update 2010-06-05: However, there was good news  from the underage teams playing in the county. Results were:

  • Fé 14 B county quarter-finals: Millstreet 2-16 Thomas Russells 2-8
  • County Premier 1 Minor Football League Group 2: Millstreet 1-15 Youghal 2-8

Millstreet Girls playing for Cork

Two Millstreet girls from the Presentation National School were representing Cork at football and camogie recently. Máire Ellen O’Connor was playing in the U12 interval game at the Cork v Tipperary Munster Senior Hurling Championship game in Páirc Uí Chaoimh, while Shauna O’Sullivan played the following Sunday in Fitzgerald Stadium Killarney the following weekend, as Cork U12 took on Kerry U12 in the interval game during the Munster Quarter Final between Cork and Kerry. Well done to the girls.
