Buy a Brick and Help the Church Restoration
The Millstreet Parish Church Restoration Appeal are seeking a positive show of support from those at home and abroad towards their ‘Buy-A-Brick’ campaign.
Through the project, it’s hoped to raise a substantial amount towards the church renovation fund. St Patrick’s Church is regarded as one of the finest buildings within the Diocese of Kerry. No major maintenance work has been undertaken since the 1930’s and as a result, time and elements have taken their inevitable toll on the fabric of the building.
The church project commenced in April 2008, the work focusing on the exterior and concentrating on long needed repairs. Amongst the detailed project, the church was completely re-slated and all flashings replaced. All walls were re-plastered and the stone work re-pointed while stained glasses required full restoration and protective storm glazing.
The above is part of an article on this weeks Corkman newspaper.
This site carried an article on the “Buy a Brick” appeal some weeks ago and can be read here.

Plastic Kerrymen
When the Cork teams are playing
your heart would fill with pride
what a shame to be a plastic
and support the other side
.
From dear old Ballydaly
back to the county bounds
a strange little creature
in some places can be found
.
So, if you can’t support your own county
we don’t need you anymore
go ahead and pack your bags
and buzz off to Rathmore
.
They’ll send you to Killorglin
a lovely town of note
you’ll be very welcome
they always need a GOAT!
by Jerry Lehane
Transcript recited by Chloe Collins on RTE last Saturday night. Of course there’s lots of them Plastics appearing out since the match last Sunday. “C” reg cars with their kerry flags out the window. To be avoided 😉

Sam in Rathmore

LTV2 Millstreet, in the interest of objectivity, balance and neighbourliness travelled to Rathmore Railway Station on Monday, 21st September 2009 to record the warm welcome accorded to the Kerry team as they brought back the famous Sam Maguire Cup. Our pictures illustrate a wealth of colour as well as scenes of heartfelt happiness and energetic enthusiasm. There was a great media presence including Paschal Sheehy broadcasting live for RTÉ 1 television. Mike Sheehan, Sheila and I covered local television recording (which Seán Murphy had done so well on previous occasions). Great credit is due to Rathmore GAA and Irish Rail for organising the historic event so superbly and so very safely. The many decorations (especially the front garden of a residence in Rathduane) illustrating the Kingdom colours truly enhanced the festive atmosphere.
Well, hopefully in 2010 we shall be travelling to Mallow or Cork extending a similar sincere welcome to the Sam Maguire Cup! (Seán Radley for LTV2 Millstreet and for www.millstreet.ie) … loads of more photos below:
284 Points for Tidy Towns in 2009
THE enthusiastic Millstreet Tidy Town Association delved into an analysis of its 2009 submission that earned a rewarding nine mark increase in the national competition. Jumping from 275 to 284 points it follows a 53 mark increase over the previous six years.
The positive reaction from the Tidy Towns adjudicator together with a number of exciting developments in the pipeline augurs well for the future. Some eighty five towns and villages entered the tidy towns within County Cork, Millstreet maintaining its high ranking position.
The positive feedback from the Adjudicator gives a dedicated Millstreet Tidy Towns Association the impetus to continue with a series of projects to enhance the town’s image…
The article can be read in the Millstreet Matters column on the Corkman newspaper this week which also contains other news from Millstreet
The Full Adjudicators Report can be read below

Up for the Match

Wonderfully colourful preparations at Presentation N.S., Millstreet for next Sunday’s All Ireland Football Final between Cork and Kerry in Croke Park. RTÉ came to film a sequence for “Up for the Match” (Saturday 9:30pm on RTÉ1 ) while Cork and Kerry newspaper photographers visited the school on Wednesday, 16th Sept. 2009. Meanwhile Seán Murphy and Margaret Pierce got to hold the real Sam Maguire Cup in Dunmanway last Friday night at the opening of the Sam Maguire Annual Festival. (Seán Radley for www.millstreet.ie )

Rent Reduction sought for Museum and Pipe Band

Councilor Noel Buckley last week was asking county council officials to reduce the rents for our Museum and our Pipe Band who both have rooms in the Carnegie Hall. Apparently the rent for these rooms is €6,500 each per year which seems like an exorbitant amount for local groups that have given so much to the community for such a long time.
It would be a great relief to both organisations to have that burden off their backs. The move was thankfully supported by other councilors from the Kanturk region. But why this was not sought in the last few years when it would more than likely have been granted remains a mystery. update 9 Oct: Found out that the increase was only upped from a nominal fee once they had been moved out of the Carnegie Hall for the year because of refurbishments.

Millstreet Debs 2009
Millstreet Debs 2009 took place on 25th August 2009. A full report on this occasion later, pictures are by Elaine Kelleher. A special mention to Ava and Clodagh two little girls who dressed up for the occasion.
fron the Corkman:
Millstreet Community School pupils replaced school uniforms with glittering ball gowns and dapper tuxedos for their debs ball.
The Millstreet school pupils and friends were out in force at their hosting in the Vienna Woods Hotel, Glanmire.
A distinct air of glamour surrounded the event as beautiful young ladies accompanied by handsome young men had a night to remember as they dined in style and danced to the beat on their big social event of the year.
St. Patrick's Church Restoration Appeal
The St.Patrick’s Church Restoration Committee published a flier at mass on Sunday 22nd August with an appeal for help with the ongoing restoration of the church.
From the middle ages to modern times, from the tiny structure in a remote hamlet to the soaring Cathedral in a great city, the Church has been the focal poing in our lives. It has been the place of a sanctuary for the outlaw, the place of refuge for the troubled and the place of peace for all. It is here we bring our babies to be baptised, where our young people are married and from where our loved ones leave to be buried.
Now in Millstreet, St.Patricks Church needs us.We make this restoration Appeal to those near and far. You may have family members nationwide or abroad who would welcome the chance to contribute. Send this leaflet to them, giving them the opportunity to join with us in ensuring that our church will be handed on the the next generation in good condition and a fitting place or worship.
Above is a selection of what is on the leaflet, which you can see below (front and back) below, and which can be seen in better detail by clicking on the pictures:
Cullen Pipe Band Co Cork – 6th Prize in WORLD PIPE BAND CHAMPIONSHIPS
by
Hugh O’Keeffe
On Saturday the 15th August 2009 the Cullen Pipe Band under the Pipe Major of Con Houlihan took part in the World Pipe Band Championships 2009 held in Glasgow Scotland. The band competed against 29 other bands from all over the World in Grade 3A. All members competed brilliantly and the band was rewarded with 6th place and was presented with the Corby Cup. Most members had been in Glasgow since the previous Wednesday the 12th of August in preparation for the weekend. Members took part in twice daily practices and this takes up a lot of dedication and effort so we thank all members for their great dedication and effort.
We also wish to thank all those who traveled over with the band to support them during the week. We also wish to thank those members who did not compete on Saturday but were present in other major completions during the year

Fundraiser
“Now there’s a brilliant fund-raising idea,” say Fr. Declan O’Connor, P.P. and Denis Lane as they note Martin Cleary’s new hair style (recently dyed for a €200.00 bet!). Martin indicates that he would be glad to re-dye his hair for a sponsored fund-raiser in aid of the restoration building fund for the Church. The church fund is now past the one million euro mark.
