Schools Closed until Thursday 14th January

Schools Closed until Thursday 14th January

The Minister for Education and Science, Batt O’Keeffe TD, has told all primary and post-primary schools to close on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday of next week due to the bad weather.

Minister O’Keeffe took the decision in the interest of the welfare of school children.

The Minister took the decision following a meeting today [Friday] of the Government’s emergency planning group and in the context of the poor weather outlook for the coming days.

Minister O’Keeffe said: ‘I took the decision to close all schools based on my concern for the health and safety of school children in these very challenging weather conditions.

‘I considered, in particular, the forecast for snowfall on Sunday and Monday which will cause further disruption.

LTV2: Photos from this weeks upcoming Show

Scenes from th3 first programme of the year on LTV2 Millstreet next Thursday night at 10.00pm repeated on the following Sunday evening at 8.00pm, on this programme we will take a look at the New Years Day swim in the Blackwater River and also report on the official opening of the Airtriciity Wind Farm at Coomacheo near Millstreet. Editor for this weeks programme is Sean Murphy.

Schools Closed until next Monday

It was announced last night that due to the treacherous nature of the roads, footpaths and concreted areas, all schools in Millstreet will remain closed until next Monday (11th January). This includes Presentation Convent, Boys National School, Millstreet Community School, Ballydaly National School and Cloghoula National School. There is no information on the other schools. With the freezing weather set to continue into next week, this will have to be reviewed in due course for the first few days of next week.

The schools have now been  off for three weeks over the Christmas period, as they were closed for two days before Christmas for the same reasons. I wonder are the kids happy to be off still, or would they prefer to be back with their friends?

Happy New Year to Everyone

from Rev Laurence Graham of the Methodist Church:

Happy New Year to everyone.

A tradition which goes back over 250 years to the early days of the Methodist movement is that, near the beginning of each year we share in a Covenant Service.  A Covenant is an agreement or set of promises which two people exchange implying a commitment to each other.  The Covenant service gives us an opportunity to renew our Covenant with God.  Of course our Covenant with God begins with him in that he has made the first move.  He came to earth as Jesus Christ and gave his life on the cross to take the consequences and brokenness caused by our sinfulness.  He then rose again and invites each of us into a personal relationship with him.  So we are called to respond by giving our lives to him, trusting him as our personal Lord and Saviour.  As the apostle John puts it “…we love because he first loved us.” (1John 4:19)

This will be the theme of our next meeting in Millstreet which takes place on Sunday 10th January at 7.00 p. m.  During this meeting we will share together in the special Covenant prayer.  The meeting takes place as usual at the Canon O’Donovan Centre on Clara Road in Millstreet.  For further information contact Rev. Laurence Graham at 064 6631613 or <email>

“Sounds of Advent” Tonight

The “Sounds of Advent” concert is on this evening in St.Patricks Church at 7:30pm. The sound in the church this morning was really good with the new sound system installed and adjusted. With two choirs  singing (our own Millstreet Choir and the Kerry Choir), it promises to be a very entertaining evening, especially if you had nothing already planned for the evening. A limited number of tickets will be available at the door. All proceeds to the Church Restoration Fund.
