Bishop Tim Carroll resigns due to ill health

The Vatican announced today that Pope Benedict has accepted the resignation of Bishop Timothy Joseph Carroll SMA (a native of Minor Row, Millstreet) as Vicar Apostolic of Kontagora, Nigeria, in accordance with canon 401, para. 2 of the Code of Canon Law. In recent years Bishop Tim has been experiencing poor health and felt it necessary to hand over to a younger man.

Bishop Tim has worked in the Kwara and Niger States area of Nigeria since ordination in 1965.

Thirty years later he was appointed Prefect Apostolic of the newly-erected Kontagora Prefecture. In 2002 he was appointed Vicar Apostolic of Kontagora and ordained a Bishop on 17 August 2002 in Kontagora. Kontagora was carved out of three existing dioceses: Ilorin, Minna and Sokoto.

The City Mass

On a very busy weekend we recorded quite a few events to share on our website. We had the visit to Millstreet on Saturday by participants from the Rally of the Lakes (with an excellent and much praised service centre at Green Glens). On Monday we had the very successful Cloghoula N.S. Sports Day. But we begin our sharing with an annual event at Shrone near Rathmore in the sacred setting known as “The City”. Seán Murphy, Brendan Murphy and I arranged to record and to transmit (almost live) the celebration of Mass which took place at 2.00 p.m. on Sunday and by 5.03 p.m. Seán Murphy had the completed recording ready for Dan Joe Kelleher in Carriganima for broadcast to thousands of appreciative viewers. Mass was celebrated by Fr. Larry Kelly who ministers in Rathmore. The historic oil truck we noted in Rathmore village on our way home. Later in the week we shall have pics. of the Rally and Cloghoula Sports.

Methodist Meeting: The Purpose Driven Life

The next Methodist meeting in Millstreet takes place this Sunday (9th May) at 7.00 p. m. in the Canon O’Donovan Centre. In the Church in Killarney in recent months we have been looking together at a wonderful book by Rick Warren called “The Purpose Driven Life”. This identifies and examines five key purposes of our lives. It has provided much food for thought and really helped many people in their relationship with God. We shall be thinking together about one aspect of this when we meet in Millstreet on Sunday night. Hope to see you there. As always please feel free to contact Rev. Laurence Graham for more information at 064 6631613 or <email>

The first seven chapters of The Purpose Driven Life have been published as What On Earth Am I Here For? and can be read online if you follow the link
