Millstreet Christmas Market

Hi Everyone,

The Christmas Market is on this weekend. We have 27 stands with a huge variety of arts, crafts, fashion, photography, home wear, plants and centre pieces, cards and a million other things I can’t name.  The hall has been decorated festively and we will have a tea room to contemplate your purchases.
We would really appreciate it if you could drop in on Friday evening after work (from 4 – 9pm).  The Ladies and Gentlemen involved in organising the concert in Drishane will be there in full costume and we will have mulled wine waiting for you.
While we are not having an official opening it would be great to have lots of support on the first night with the hope that you will spread the word and your friends and relations will pop in over the weekend.
Thank you,
Members of the Christmas Lights Committee
Noirin Twomey, Joseph Lawlor, Catherine Pomeroy, Nicola Mc Mahon

Duhallow Community Food Services

2010 January - RSS Supervisor Tim Ring making deliveries on foot when the van could go no further in the snow in Kilcorney Co Cork

Duhallow Community Food Services is an award winning community enterprise providing a subsidised meal service to those that are not in a position to cook for themselves and are isolated because of age, illness, lack of transport or other disadvantages that result in living in a rural area. In order to supplement the cost of producing the “meals on wheels” service, Duhallow Community Food Services expanded the business into two other key facets, bakery and contract catering. For family and community events, celebrations and gatherings, Duhallow Community Food Services offer a selection of meal options. Typically this service is used for christenings, communions, confirmations, home entertaining and wider community events.

Fathers day at Millstreet Country Park and Restaurant

Hi all,

Father’s Day is virtually upon us and, if this takes you by surprise or you had forgotten the exact date then Millstreet Country Park is here to tell you that Sunday 20th June is the one to remember.

Father’s and Grandfather’s sadly usually end up with generic gifts for Father’s Day from their loved ones, simply because of the lack of real options for Father’s Day gifts. Dads can be tough to buy for, and depending on their interests, there may be no obvious choice.  So how about something more thoughtful than a tie for Dear Old Dad this year?

Fancy doing something different? Then why not take your Dad outside this year? Why not visit Millstreet Country Park and plan a number of Father’s Day activities and make this special day an enjoyable and memorable event for him and for the whole family.

On Local Businesses

A comment on millstreet.ie this morning questioned the value of putting what was in effect advertising for small local business on the front page of the site like all other new articles on the site. Now maybe Seamus had a point, and I agree that they should not overrun the site, but I feel that it’s more important to keep our local businesses going by giving the support we can.

By pure coincidence there was an interview on the Mooney Show (RTE Radio 1) with David McWilliams, on how towns all across Ireland are dying, and on how locals are fighting back and saying “enough of this, how do we attract the locals to shop in town”.

They describe a very interesting thing of how a town dies.  A business closes …. maybe a second one … then ‘to let’ signs … then ‘for sale’ signs … buildings don’t get let out and are not maintained … and prospective buyers say I don’t like the look of that, and choose to move somewhere else … and then because nobody does nothing, the town becomes a ghost time.

It’s a very interesting interview, and reminiscent of the efforts of the Millstreet Development Group before the Christmas period. Honestly we don’t want our towns to end up like the ghost towns in Middle America with the big shopping mall outside their towns.

Listen to the interview which is on the RTE website (starts at 27:50)
