The Big Concert this week will be in our parish Church on Sunday November 29th in aid of the Church restoration Fund.entitled “Sounds of Advent.” Our own Parish choir will open the two hour show, and they will be followed by the  Kerry Choral Society.

Tickets @ €20 each can be bought over a wide area or from the parish office ,or at the door on the night. Please support it well. Starts at 7.30 ,bring a cushion as the Church seats are hard.

Youghal defeat Millstreet U16s in County Championship

YOUGHAL withstood a determined finish from Millstreet in a keenly contested County U-16 ‘B’ Football Championship semi final played at a rainlashed Mourneabbey last Monday.Weather conditions were anything but suitable for the game and great credit must go to both set of players for serving up a high standard of play given the wretched rain that prevailed in the opening half. At the end of the hour, there could be no argument about the outcome, Youghal were far, the hungrier side, their application superb and in general, the East Cork boys emerged much more enterprising in the prevailing conditions.

Removal this Saturday evening at 8pm from Tarrant’s Funeral Home, Millstreet to the Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Cullen. Requiem Mass tomorrow, Sunday, at 10.30am. Burial afterwards in the adjoining cemetery. Family flowers only, donations to the Irish Cancer Society.

No Buyers for Affordable Housing

tw_empty2Cork County Council hopes to dispose of 42 houses, deemed affordable, in towns and villages in North Cork, as it has been unable to find buyers for them…

The houses are in Bweeng (10), Castlelyons (2), Charleville (2), Glanworth (6), Kanturk (6), Kilworth (1), Mallow (1), Millstreet (3) and Rathcormac (11)…

A senior executive officer with the council, said the local authority couldn’t continue to carry the costs associated with the empty houses. He told councillors the council had decided to sell off the houses in areas deemed to be in less demand for affordable housing…

Last year the Council dropped the prices of affordable housing when they realised that the market price was then below the price of their affordable housing. But still they have failed to sell them. Now they want to sell them at any cost, just to get the expense off their balance sheets.

This is FRIENDSHIP WEEK, so get out there a give everybody a smile or a hug or whatever it is that you do best, to brighten up their day.

A great crowd of friends, family and supporters, attended the celebration party which was held at our Nibbles Café on Saturday night. Eleanor proudly displayed her All Ireland Award as she welcomed her guests. Canon Declan came to bless the place and he was accompanied by Fr Paddy O Byrne.The food was both plentiful and tasty and her winning dish of pear and almond tart was in great demand. And on behalf of everyone I want to wish Eleanor and her wonderful staff every success for the future. Look up the Website for all the pictures .

Clampdown on roadside sale of Cars

In the north Cork administration area – Watergrasshill, Fermoy, Mitchelstown, Mallow, Charleville, Kanturk and Millstreet – there were 41 vehicle notices issued. Thirty-eight were removed within the required time limit.

The Irish Examiner has reported that Cork County Council are clamping down on the practice of selling cars on the roadside, which is in contravention of a Cork County Council bylaw which was introduced in 2007. They are issuing 24 hour removal notices, and then impounding the cars, with retrieval costing on average €460, and legal proceedings if not retrieved.

JB Hurling Championship V Lismire

Yesterday Millstreet defeated Lismire in a keenly contested Duhallow Junior B Hurling Championship in Millstreet Town Park by a scoreline of 2-7 to 0-9.

A tough but low scoring first half saw the teams deadlocked at four points a piece at half time. The heavy rain over the previous few days meant that the ball was slow to move along the ground, but Millstreet appeared to have the upper hand when the ball was off the ground and should have been ahead at the half. The start of the second half saw Millstreet move two points ahead, but then struck the killer blow with a goal and two points in quick succession seeming to secure the match. In the last few minutes Lismire tagged over three points, but it was not enough to overcome a competent Millstreet side.

They move onto the semi-final where they will meet Dromtarriffe (again) who they beat in the first round, but have been automatically byed in the semi final! Only in Duhallow. More pictures below:

Broadband in your area?

Map of Eircom phone exchanges in Cork, and which ones are DSL enabled (click for full details)

Recently I was reading that Eircom had no plans to roll out broadband to Cullen so I decided to have a look and see what the story was. Essentially, Eircom is saying that it has no plans to upgrade the following local exchanges:

  • Cullen
  • Carriganima
  • Lyre
  • Berneys Cross

Their reason is mainly economic: that there’s not enough houses locally to justify the cost of upgrading the exchanges.

I know that PermaNet are able to supply wireless broadband to some of these areas, but if you want it through your phone line, you’ll really have to get onto your local representatives to push to get it changed.

It’s not that long ago since we had no broadband in Millstreet (about 6 years now), and the only reason that Eircom upgraded its servers to DSL at the time was because they heard that PermaNet were setting up in Millstreet, and wanted to grab market share before PermaNet could set up their infrastructures. As usual, it’s business before people.

Summer Horse Show is back in the Saddle!

THE absence of the sound of hooves at Millstreet Horse Show last August, after the show was canceled, cost the region €10 million, according Green Glens owner Noel C Duggan, who has announced plans for a whole new show next year.

The ‘man of steel’ told The Corkman that it is “full steam ahead” for next year’s show with the Green Glens committing to reviving one of the highlights of the showjumping year in Ireland…………

Last week we carried a short sniplet from the Irish Independant newspaper which said that there would be a horse show in Millstreet in summer of next year. The Corkman this week carries a more in-depth article and the full article can be read here.

Ireland Involved Awards – Seán Radley Nominated

Our own Seán Radley has been nominated for the 2009 Ireland Involved Awards which take place this evening (Nov 5th 2009)  at a dinner hosted by the Taoiseach’s Office in the Royal Hospital Kilmainham.

Sean has been nominated in the “Arts, Culture & Media” Section for his work documenting community life in Millstreet for the last 40 years. He will be accompanied at the awards ceremony by Mike and Kathy O’Connor who nominated him in the first case.

On behalf of our community this morning, I want to convey our heartiest congratulations to our own Seán Radley on being shortlisted down to the last 30 in the All Ireland Volunteering Awards, sponsored by Specsavers. He is to travel to Dublin on Thursday for the final, which will be held at the Royal Hospital in Kilmainham. And we wish him the very best of Millstreet luck. Michael and Kathy O’Connor, who nominated him in the first pace, will go along with him on the day.

Death Notice: Patricia Calhoun (née O’Sullivan), Florida & Millstreet

CALHOUN, Patricia (O’Sullivan), 87, died suddenly on April 2, 2009 in Clearwater. She was born May 19, 1921 in Millstreet County Cork, Ireland. In 1939 she moved to London, England where she was drafted as a telephone operator in the British Women’s Auxiliary Air Force. It was there that she met her husband, James who was serving in the United States 8th Air Force. They were married in Thetford, England on April 11, 1945. As a war bride, she emigrated to the United States aboard the Andrea Doria eventually settling in Ashland, WI. She became a United States citizen on May 4, 1951 and lived in many parts of Wisconsin including Fond du Lac, Eau Claire and Superior. She moved to Clearwater in 1981 and was a member of St. Brendan’s Women’s Guild and the Island Estates Civic Association. She is survived by her husband of 64 year and her four children. Brian (Jeanne) of Jacksonville, Sean of Concord, CA, Garry (Deborah) of New Brighton MN and Colleen (George Harig Jr.), Oakland, CA. She is also survived by her four grandchildren, David Calhoun, Daniel Calhoun, Paige Calhoun, Chloe Harig and one great-grand-child, Phoenix Calhoun. A gathering of friends will take place at Hubbell Funeral Home, Belleair Bluffs on Saturday, April 4, 2009 at 1 pm followed by internment at Sylvan Abbey Memorial Park. Death Notice: Bridget E. McCoy, Florida

McCOY Bridget E. McCoy (Née O’Sullivan), 85, passed away Tuesday, April 7, 2009. She was born on January 12, 1924 in Millstreet, County Cork, Ireland, to James O’Sullivan and Noreen O’Connor. She served in the RAF during WWII as a Nurse where she met and cared for her future husband of 58 years, SGM James S. McCoy. After the War, she accompanied her husband to the US in 1945 where they began their family. She is survived by one son, CW4 James S. McCoy (Linda), and predeceased by one daughter, Sharon Nagy. Bridget has three grand- children, Michelle, Marsha, and Brian, and two great grandchildren, Kennady and Karsyn. The family will receive friends from 12-2:00 P.M. in the Hardage-Giddens Town & Country Chapel on Friday, April 10, 2009. Funeral Services will be held on Friday, April 10, 2009 at 2:00 PM at Riverside Memorial Park. Millstreet Matters – 29 Oct 09

Millstreet Matters this week in the Corkman newspaper concentrates on a number of items that have already been mentioned on this site already: the Fancy Dress Ball this Friday night in aid of Cystic Fibrosis, the recent Pony Show in the Green Glens, the church restoration, the GAA draw, and the Paddy McCarthy Commemoration.

Sausage & Pudding Winners 2009

The Associated Craft Butchers of Ireland - Links to Home Page Millstreet had two winners at the recent Sausage & Pudding Championships with O’Leary’s Family Butchers in the Square winning a Gold medal in the Traditional Sausage section, and O’Brien’s Craft Butcher from Minor Row winning a Silver Medal also in the Traditional Sausage. They had previously been successful in the regional competitions (Southern Region) which qualified them for the finals. All the medals won are detailed below. The Corkman also had an article on their successes:

Well known Jerry Pat O’Leary recently won a National Award at Craft Butchers Sausage & Pudding competition at the RDS in Dublin.

He demonstrated that the very important attribute of consistency forms part of his reputation for quality, by hitting the top spot at the award ceremony. Having given a strong performance at regional level with three gold medals, Mr O’Leary’s produce was recognised and awarded by the presiding judges.

Fondest Greetings dear listeners and I wish you all the very best on this wet, windy, but mild calm Tuesday morning.

The Pony Show which is held every year at the Green Glens for charity, was again a great success on Friday Saturday and Sunday last. Entries were away up on former years, and competitions didn’t finish on Sunday night until well after mid-night. Many of the horse-owners expressing their disappointment that there was no Summer Show here this year. But please God we will see a return again in 2010.

Next feature at the Green Glens will be the popular Self Build exhibition which will be on the second weekend of November.

Over ten of our strapping people took part in the Dublin City Marathon over the weekend. Well done to them.

Here are the results of this weeks parish lotto draw which was held at Corkerys Bar on Sunday night. Numbers drawn were ,11, 21, 27, 32 and the Jackpot was not won. €100 went to  Cathryn O Callaghan, Drishane View, the seller was Mairead Daly and she got €50 sellers prize, €50 went to The O’Donovan Family, West End, €20 each to T. Bolton, Cullen, Eva Murphy, Old Coach Rd, Killian O’Riordan, Ballydaly, Patrick Coleman, Tanyard Wood. Rent Increase for Museum and Pipe Band slashed

Last weeks Corkman newspaper reported on Cork County Council backing down from a huge 10,000% rent increase for Millstreet Museum and Millstreet Pipe Band in the newly refurbished Carnegie Hall. The article can be read here, but below is an extract:

THERE was a slice of very welcome news” at the Kanturk Area meeting this week when senior official Aidan Weir said that Millstreet Pipe Band and the Millstreet Museum could remain in situ at the revamped Carnegie Hall for a “nominal rent”.

At a previous meeting in September, Cllr Noel Buckley (FG) lamented an increase being put on both voluntary organisations and said the rental asking price of €6,400 was just not a reality.

Despite Mr Weir dishing out bagloads of disappointing news to councillors who wanted potholes fixed and lighting put in place, he was able to deliver a slice of very welcome news.

He said he met with other officials and it was unanimously decided that both groups do Trojan work in their community and they would now only have to pay a nominal rent.

“At last, some good news,” said the chairman of Kanturk Area Meeting Cllr Noel Buckley.

Fr Sean Tucker’s lovely book: The Famed Hill of Clara, has arrived at Wordsworth Bookshop. And is a must for anyone connected with Millstreet.  And a lovely read. It will be officially launched at the Aubane Social Club on Sunday October 25 at 8pm.

The National Dairy Show will be held at the Green Glens Arena this Saturday October  17th. All under one roof.  Restaurant will be up and running. And there’s always plenty of Parking. A great day is guaranteed.

New sewage system raises a stink

LEGAL notices are to be served on some residents at West End in Millstreet who have not paid a connection fee to a new sewerage system which was put in place by Cork County Council at a cost of €25,000.

While the council has had the new system installed, and has had connections brought up to the houses, residents must privately pay for a plumber to connect them to the new system, says the council.

The old sewerage system, which is at the back of the row of houses at West End, is over 100 years old.

At Kanturk Area Meeting on Monday, Cllr Noel Buckley (FG) said that “bad odour” has been emitting from the old sewerage system for the past two weeks. He described it as a “major problem at West End”.
