LEGAL notices are to be served on some residents at West End in Millstreet who have not paid a connection fee to a new sewerage system which was put in place by Cork County Council at a cost of €25,000.
While the council has had the new system installed, and has had connections brought up to the houses, residents must privately pay for a plumber to connect them to the new system, says the council.
The old sewerage system, which is at the back of the row of houses at West End, is over 100 years old.
At Kanturk Area Meeting on Monday, Cllr Noel Buckley (FG) said that “bad odour” has been emitting from the old sewerage system for the past two weeks. He described it as a “major problem at West End”.

eks Buy a Brick and Help the Church Restoration
The Millstreet Parish Church Restoration Appeal are seeking a positive show of support from those at home and abroad towards their ‘Buy-A-Brick’ campaign.
Through the project, it’s hoped to raise a substantial amount towards the church renovation fund. St Patrick’s Church is regarded as one of the finest buildings within the Diocese of Kerry. No major maintenance work has been undertaken since the 1930’s and as a result, time and elements have taken their inevitable toll on the fabric of the building.
The church project commenced in April 2008, the work focusing on the exterior and concentrating on long needed repairs. Amongst the detailed project, the church was completely re-slated and all flashings replaced. All walls were re-plastered and the stone work re-pointed while stained glasses required full restoration and protective storm glazing.

Our heartiest congratulations go out this morning to Eleanor Leahy, of Nibbles Restaurant, West End, Millstreet on winning a Gold Medal at the Final of the National Irish Food Awards competition entitled, Blas na h’Éireann which was held in Dingle last week. Eleanor’s entry was in the “Puddings and Desserts” section and her winning dish was a Pear and Almond Tart. We’ll be all in for a taste! Well done Eleanor.
Our Tidy Towns Committee traveled to the Rochestown Park Hotel last week where they received a cheque and plaque, for coming third in their section in the anti-litter competition. Well done to all.
Millstreet Ambulance
The Corkman this week carries a story about the ambulances
in the North Cork region.
THE entire Duhallow region was left without an ambulance on Saturday last, after the Millstreet service was requested to attend calls in Cork city while the Kanturk unit was called to respond to at least three calls in Mallow.
This is according to a source close to the ambulance service in North who added that this repeated ‘haphazard’ attitude to what should be “a ready to go rapid response emergency unit” will ultimately lead to a person dying because of lack of staff.
Word on the ground a few months ago was that our ambulance were one of the first called into Cork City when they have a shortage in the City, leaving us without an ambulance if there was an emergency.This is definitely not an ideal position to find ourselves in, but that’s just the way the system works whether we like it or not!

Million congratulations to the Cork Ladies Football team, and all connected with them, on making it a five–in-a-row on Sunday in Croke Park. It was such an exciting match, and could go either way up to the closing minutes. But the then the hunger of the Corkonians came to the fore, they were blind to everything except the goal-mouth, and sealed their victory at the last minute. And to think that only two weeks ago this bunch of beautiful young women, also won the All-Ireland camogie final at the same venue. I hope they get the recognition, and the esteem that they deserve. Congratulations to them again. They did us proud and we are justly Proud of them.

Oh dear, should I be depressed, disillusioned, have a feeling of hopelessness, another defeat, to Kerry. But after having a little moan, one can only admire them because we all know that they will rise up and get ready for the fray again next year.
In the meantime lets look at the girls. Two weeks ago, their Cork Camogie team won the All Ireland, in Croke Park, and their football team are putting the final preparations for a similar level next Sunday.
284 Points for Tidy Towns in 2009
THE enthusiastic Millstreet Tidy Town Association delved into an analysis of its 2009 submission that earned a rewarding nine mark increase in the national competition. Jumping from 275 to 284 points it follows a 53 mark increase over the previous six years.
The positive reaction from the Tidy Towns adjudicator together with a number of exciting developments in the pipeline augurs well for the future. Some eighty five towns and villages entered the tidy towns within County Cork, Millstreet maintaining its high ranking position.
The positive feedback from the Adjudicator gives a dedicated Millstreet Tidy Towns Association the impetus to continue with a series of projects to enhance the town’s image…

Boggeragh Wind Farm Development
Following a lot of work on the ground which saw miles of roads being built and ground works being put in place the first of the wind turbines have now arrived on the site of the new Boggeragh Mountain wind farm development.
Over the coming weeks these wind turbines will be erected on their bases with the help of one of the largest cranes in use in Ireland at the moment.
The 57mw project when complete will be Ireland’s largest stand alone wind farm. The project at a cost in excess of €100 million will be able to generate enough power to supply the electricity needs of 30,000 Irish householders annually.
Drake and Moynihan WRC Australia Results
We had reported on the WRC Australia where Charlie Drake and Eoin Moynihan were competing two weeks ago. Finally confirmation of the results from the Corkman
FRUSTRATION turned to elation for North Cork rally pair Charlie Drake and Eoin Moynihan on winning the PRC National Class in Australian leg of the World Rally championship in New South Wales.
Derinagree native Drake described their 15th overall position and class win as one of the proudest moments of his life.
“To stand on the podium of a world rally championship round and be presented with a trophy and watch the tri-colour flying in front of me was brillant”
The pair ran into problems with scrutiny, excluded from both group N and official results because of not having a rear wiper which was very frustrating

Wonderfully colourful preparations at Presentation N.S., Millstreet for next Sunday’s All Ireland Football Final between Cork and Kerry in Croke Park. RTÉ came to film a sequence for “Up for the Match” (Saturday 9:30pm on RTÉ1 ) while Cork and Kerry newspaper photographers visited the school on Wednesday, 16th Sept. 2009. Meanwhile Seán Murphy and Margaret Pierce got to hold the real Sam Maguire Cup in Dunmanway last Friday night at the opening of the Sam Maguire Annual Festival. (Seán Radley for www.millstreet.ie )

No Money for Pedestrian Crossing
The Corkman notes this week that at the recent County Council Meeting, councillors, at the behest of their constituents, were requesting pedestrian crossings in Millstreet and Boherbue, for greater public safety. However, senior county official Mr Weir, along with Newmarket based engineer Mort Ahern, explained that a pedestrian crossing costs €10,000 — which the council did not have to give.
With county council income having taken a nosedive this year, senior official Aidan Weir admitted that even paying their own — reduced — staff was proving a challenge.

The Lotto Results. As you know I had no lotto results last week because due to the passing of John Cronin, the draw was deferred to Tuesday night. It was held at the Mal Passo Bar. There was no winner and the jackpot raised to €13,600.

Rent Reduction sought for Museum and Pipe Band
Councilor Noel Buckley last week was asking county council officials to reduce the rents for our Museum and our Pipe Band who both have rooms in the Carnegie Hall. Apparently the rent for these rooms is €6,500 each per year which seems like an exorbitant amount for local groups that have given so much to the community for such a long time.
It would be a great relief to both organisations to have that burden off their backs. The move was thankfully supported by other councilors from the Kanturk region. But why this was not sought in the last few years when it would more than likely have been granted remains a mystery. update 9 Oct: Found out that the increase was only upped from a nominal fee once they had been moved out of the Carnegie Hall for the year because of refurbishments.

I don’t have the lotto results for you this morning. Sadly one of our esteemed members John Cronin passed away over the weekend and as a mark of respect the draw was not held on Sunday night. Instead it will be held at the Mal Passo Bar at nine to-night. Meanwhile the gentle John of 61 years of age will be laid to rest following the 1pm Requim Mass at our local church today.
Guards of honour drawn from the various local voluntary bodies that he worked with over the years, lined the route from Tarrants funeral home last evening, and will again to-day from the church to his last resting place, in St Mary’s cemetery, which is within close proximity of his family home at Priests Cross. Our deepest sympathy is extended to his wife Breda, daughter Elaine, son Alan and all their extended family. Ar dheis De, go raibh a anam dilis.
Court not returning to Carnegie Hall
In a sign of the world we live in, it seems that the court services have no plans to return to the newly refurbished Carnegie Hall where it has sat for the last 100 years. It had planned to return after refurbishment work which continued over the last year was complete, but it now seems that that is not the case, as they blamed the “current economic climate”. Unfortunately that seems to be excuse that most are using these days, because it is too easy to get away with.

Belgian ambassador to unveil water feature
“A spectacular new water feature will be uneveiled at Millstreet Country Park on Sunday with Belgian Ambassador to Ireland Mr Robert Devriese performing the official duties.
The showpiece is a replica of the original Mont des Arts, built in the central square of Brussels in the early years of the 20th century.
The showcase square was created for the Universal Exposition held in the city in 1910. It featured a Park and a monumental staircase with cascading waterfalls descending the gentle slope from the Place Royal down to Emperor Boulevard”

Community Hears of Mallow Hospital Fears

Millstreet Community Council convened a special meeting where Dr Pat Casey spoke on the present state of affairs at Mallow Hospital.
The hospital is held in very high regard by our community and recent cut-backs by the Health Board have left many people worried about its future.

There was a great buzz in the town at the weekend with many people home on holidays and others visiting the area. But the Clara Inn was a hive of music, food and good companionship for the retirement party in honour of Davy Twomey, His employer John Buckley , and his co-workers from the building industry as well as family friends and neighbours, gathered to wish the popular Davy many years of well deserved and happy retirement.
Tour of Ireland 2009 is Coming!
On Saturday August 22nd at approx 1:20pm, one hundred and twenty of the worlds best cyclists will pass through Millstreet in Stage 2 of the Tour if Ireland. The cyclists will be coming from Rylane, over Mushera, into Millstreet, out on a loop over Curragh mountain, back to Millstreet, and on to Killarney.
The leading rides are seven times Tour de France winner Lance Armstrong who brings his Astana team to Ireland for the first time, and six times Tour de France stage winner Mark Cavendish (Columbia – HTC), who won three stages here last year, and an amazing six stages in this years Tour de France.
Of course roads will be closed for some short time, but hopefully lots of people will come out and cheer on the cyclists, like previous times the race passed through, when it was known as the Nissan Classic.

Millstreet & District Farmers Calf Sale In Aid of St Patrick’s Church Restoration Project
The fundraising venture by Millstreet farmers has beaten the recessionary doom and gloom to donate €24,331 towards their Church Restoration Project.
On Saturday 14th March the Millstreet and district farmers Calf sale in aid of the Millstreet Restoration Fund reached its conclusion with close to hundred calves sold at Macroom Mart
The Proceeds from the sale goes towards the St Patrick’s Church Millstreet Church Restoration Project that’s currently in the height of a major €3 million development. The concept spurred from the Aubane Farm Discussion Group and farmers felt it was the ideal opportunity for those in Millstreet and the surrounding district to support the cause. On Saturday night 23rd April at Millstreet GAA Hall the proceeds from the Calf sale were handed over to the Church Restoration Committee.
Chairman John Twomey “thanked the farmers and those who supported the venture. He also thanked his excellent committee”.
“The additional support of Cork Marts and the Millstreet Parish Restoration Committee ensured everybody was 100 per cent behind our efforts”, he said.
Five collection points allowed calves to be collected at Cloughoula, Ballydaly, Cullen, Aubane and Millstreet and transported by local hauliers to Cork Co-op Mart in Macroom.
“We were delighted to be associated with a task that will be recalled and perhaps repeated again”, said Macroom Mart representative Tim McSweeney.
Richie O’Connor presented a cheque for €24,331 to Millstreet Parish Priest Canon Declan O’Connor. Denny Lane Chairman of the Church Restoration Committee also expressed his thanks to everyone who was part of the Calf Sale and he said they would welcome any other fundraising ideas. Canon Declan O’Connor also spoke on the work that has already been done on the church and he also expressed his thanks to everyone who supported the venture and to the committee who organised the Calf Sale. “A marvelous amount of money has been collected from this venture” Jerry Buckley from the Church Restoration Committee gave an account of the work that has been done on church to date.
Young boxers show their fighting spirit
TWO young Millstreet boxers gave it their all in a terrific campaign of fantastic endeavour only to be denied All-Ireland glory in the National Juvenile Championships. Both Seán Óg O’Connor and Eric Barrett are in their debutant season with Rylane Boxing Club and came close to securing outright honours. Seán Óg began his quest in the Boys 1 33kg grade on comprehensive wins over Jack Daly (Riverstown) and Patrick McDonough(Leeside) to capture county accolade.
And the momentum was maintained in the Munster campaign, Seán Óg to the fore in a marvellous provincial final against Patrick Doyle from Clonmel.
