Concern for jobs in Cadbury’s
There is concern for the jobs in the chocolate crumb producing plant in Rathmore, as the implications of Kraft’s $13 billion takeover of Cadburys come into focus. It appears that Kraft want to strip away any excess cost, which could see the end of the Cadbury plants in Ireland. There are a number of Millstreet people who work in the factory.

Workers at the Cadbury plant in Rathmore, still do not know if the takeover of the company by US food giant Kraft will affect their jobs.
Last year, SIPTU agreed to rationalisation proposals resulting in the loss of 28 jobs in Rathmore. The plant now has a workforce of around 80.
Cadbury Ireland Ltd employs almost 1,600 people, including 1,100 at its plant in Coolock, Dublin, and the remainder at plants in Tallaght, west Dublin, and Rathmore.
Chocolate crumb, a basic ingredient of Cadbury’s internationally known chocolate bars, is produced in Rathmore and …….. (see the Irish examiner for the full story)
K&L Top Transport Company in Ireland
A MILLSTREET company will represent Ireland at the upcoming 2010 European Transport Company of the year awards in Amsterdam.
The awards are considered the Oscars of the transport and logistics industry with companies from across Europe competing.
K&L Deliveries, which is a Kerry member of TPN (The Pallet Network), has been in operation since 1986 when MD Gordon O’Keeffe and his wife Breda started off their business with two trucks. Now the company operates from a 60,000 square foot warehouse and have more than 35 trucks on the road.

Fireball in the Sky before 6pm tonight
Listening to Matt Cooper on his Last Word radio show on TodayFM this evening, he said that he had just got a text saying that someone had just seen a huge light in the sky over Millstreet moving north east towards Kanturk. He thought it was a hoax at first, but then they started getting loads of texts from all around the country. It looks like it was a large meteorite, hundreds of times bigger than your normal shooting star. Here’s a video of the meteorite on youTube.

Fondest greetings dear listeners and I wish you all the very best on this the second day of Spring February 2nd Candlemus Day, the day when candles are blessed for use on our alters during the year and donations accepted to cover their cost.
Last week members of our Tidy Towns Association, buried a capsule at the Wild-Life Plot in the Clara Road and it will not be opened for 50 years. It contains over 40 various items. Some children from our National Schools were present for the ceremony, and when it will be opened again in 2060, they will be able to say that they were there on the day it was put down.

Bus Eireann to reduce Busses through Millstreet
Bus Eireann have announced that they are reducing the number of scheduled bus stops through Millstreet every day (Route 40 Cork-Tralee). However they will be running a shuttle bus from Macroom to Killarney via Millstreet twice in both directions every day
There will be thirteen departures a day in each direction from Cork to Tralee every day. All services will now operate on the main road via Ballyvourney only. Route 257 will provide a shuttle connection between Macroom/ Killarney and Millstreet/Rathmore. The new timetable changes come into effect from Feb 28th.
Busses passing through Millstreet will be at (Mon-Saturday only):
- towards Killarney 12:55 & 15:55 &19:40
- towards Macroom 09:40 & 14:40
Sundays
- towards Killarney 14:40 19:40
- towards Macroom 19:05
The old times through Millstreet were
- Mon – Sat to Tralee: 10:40 14:40 18:40 21:40
- Sundays to Tralee: 09:40 14:40 18:40 21:40
- Mon – Sat to Cork: 07:30 10:05 13:05 15:05 19:05
- Sundays to Cork: 10:05 13:05 15:05 19:05
This means that there are less than half the buses in the day, and that there is little chance of getting to Cork or Killarney for a day trip. There are no peak time services for students especially (Friday evening & Sunday evening). We can only hope that a private bus company picks up the pieces, or that the trains give more attractive pricing.

Time and time again Francie Duggan writes a beautiful poem on the Website, about someone who has died in his native Millstreet and this week is no exception. His fitting lines about the late Lily Guerin (Justice) is a joy for those who knew her well. Well done again Francie.
At the monthly meeting of the Community Council, which was held on Tuesday night, it was decided to host a Community Awards Social again this year. It will be held at the Wallis Arms Hotel on Friday March 12th. Categories are for Service to the community, Hall of Fame, Youth Award, Cultural and Arts, & Unsung Hero. People are asked to nominate people or person whom they consider best entitled to come under any one of these headings. Please contact Secretary, Marie Bourke, or any council member.
Dromtariffe GAA Social
DROMTARIFFE GAA SOCIAL will take place at the Wallis Arms Hotel Millstreet on Friday January 29. Tickets are on sale at €25 each and are available from Derrinagree Post Office, Rathcoole Post Office or from Club Officers.
Music will be provided on the evening by the Celts. On the night the club will celebrate 125 years in existence and special guests on the night will be the victorious Minor Hurlers who won the Duhallow Minor Championship for the first time.

TADGH Collins grabbed a hat-trick as Millstreet claimed their place in the second round of the Murphy’s Irish Stout County Cup after a comprehensive 4-1 victory over Knockraha at Pigeon Hill on Saturday in the first round of the County Cup.
It was a devastating display by Collins of what clinical finishing is all about.
e proved throughout to be too-hot to handle for the Knockraha defence and aside from his hattrick he also did some tremendous work on the left before setting up Brian Kelleher for number two.

RATHDUANE NATIONAL SCHOOL: The future of Rathduane National School is under the spotlight as parents and friends go all out to save their local rural based primary school base.
Concerned associates from the greater Ballydaly catchment area are hoping to offset dwindling numbers.
Rathduane National School is an excellent example of a primary school establishment that flourished and adapted to the changing fortunes of time. It has been and, hopefully to parents and friends, will remain a focal point for learning in their small community.

Roads will get even worse if funding isn’t increased
OVER the past month or so, roads and water services all over Cork county have experienced widespread damage as a result of the appalling weather conditions.
This has led to many people suffering severe hardship and disruption to their daily lives – they were left without running water in their homes and their local roads were ripped up by the heavy rain, snow and ice.
In response to this crisis, an emergency repairs work programme fund of €6m has been put in place by Cork County Council to carry out emergency repairs to roads and water supplies in the county.

Millstreet water supplies still ‘at a critically low level’
WATER supplies in Millstreet are still at a ‘critically low level,’ and Cork County Council are advising all users to keep usage to a minimum, as leaks within private residences still need to be repaired.
Unless there is a reduction in the water usage within the next few hours Cork County Council will have no choice but to discontinue the water supply at night to allow reservoirs to be restored to normal operating levels,” said a spokesperson on Monday.
The situation did not improve and water supplies in Millstreet were turned off at night at the time of The Corkman going to press..

Millstreet and Cullen into Munster Scór na nOg final
BOHERBEE, Millstreet and Cullen will be among the finalists at this year’s Coiste na Mumhan Scór na nOg after they won through their semi-final on Sunday last.
The Coiste na Mumhan Scór na nOg semi-final at Ovens involved clubs from Cork, Kerry and Waterford and this very popular competition drew a huge attendance to the Cork venue.

2009 in Kilcorney: The Year in Review

2009 was the year that the world that we knew fell apart. Unemployment figures went through the roof, many people learned the sad fact that there is no such thing as free money, the banks came a begging looking for our money to bail them out.
The weather matched the mood of the year with rain, wind, snow and ice and no sunshine.
January saw the AGM of Kilcorney Bowling Club which was held at Caroline’s Bar, for them the highlight of 2008 was the hosting of the European Dutch Moore Championships in Rathcoole.
Kilcorney Communtiy Gym reopened after the Christmas break giving people a much needed reason to loose a few extra pounds. Kilcorney Social Centre was also a hive of activity with set dancing, Tuesday club and baby and toddler group back in action.

The Community Council Meeting which was deferred will be held to-night at the Wallis Arms Hotel starting at 8.30, All members please attend.
The awful happenings in Haiti some days ago, shook the world, but here in Millstreet we felt a kind of affiliation with that country, because last years our community fundraised to enable Jerry Pat O Leary to go to that troubled land, as part of the Haven organisation, to build houses for those people who are so, so poor. Jerry tells us that the place where they worked is well away from the epi-centre of the earthquake and that the houses they built are still intact. He is having a meeting with the Haven organisation to-night to decide what further help they can be in Haiti. We will keep you informed. And please note that a fund for the cause has been opened at our Credit Union.

Kilbrin prove Millstreet’s nemesis in the Championship
John Tarrant takes a look back on the hurling year that was in Duhallow GAA
THE second part of the Millstreet GAA review focuses on hurling where a number of teams came up short in both league and championships.
Dwelling on the JAHC, a powerful surge in extra time allowed Kilbrin pull away from a gritty Millstreet to secure a 422 to 5-15 win in a dramatic first round played in Banteer. From a hotly competitive and a pulsating encounter, the pace and the tempo of the game was frantic from the outset and with 46 scores in total registered confirmed those in attendance received value for money.
Thereafter, Millstreet flattered to deceive where a sharper Freemount possessed too much firepower for Millstreet on recording a 3-12 to 2-12 triumph in the 2nd round qualifier played in Kanturk. At the end of the hour, Millstreet yielded to the greater stickwork and greater combined play of Freemount.

Stuck on a train for hours in the cold
RAIL passengers travelling to Kerry on Sunday night (10th Jan) endured a nightmare journey home when engine failure caused the final service of the day to be almost five hours late arriving in Tralee. This was the evening of the snow and cold.
Commuters found themselves stranded between Millstreet and Rathmore for over two hours on an Intercity train with intermittent heat and lighting, when the 7.10pm service developed engine problems shortly after leaving Mallow Train Station.
The train eventually arrived at Tralee at 3.47am on Monday morning, fully four hours and 42 minutes late for a journey scheduled to last three hours and 55 minutes.

Snowmen and Igloos
WEARY residents in Millstreet forgot about their lack of water for the past month on Sunday evening and community spirit took over as people put their artistic skills to the fore and built a giant igloo and snowman.
For the estimated 16 householders at Old Coach Avenue in Millstreet it was a welcome break from the strife of the past month, as some residents have not had a drop of water out of their taps, while others went to Tubrid Well ….
