Lena O’Keeffe

Her work for the Millstreet Tidy Town Committee for many years played a huge part in her life
Lena nee Kelleher to John O’ Keeffe was a good and a loving wife
Her and John often seen doing their tidy town work on the streets of Millstreet Town
On Summer evenings long ago after supper till sundown

With John out for their evening walk she will not be seen again
But a kind hearted woman of striking beauty in memory does remain
She was one of Millstreet’s finest so graceful and so tall
Mental pictures of her with those who knew her will remain to recall

The boy who is all Heart

The 4-year-old son of Irish immigrants bravely battles congenital heart disease and continues to beat the odds

“I have a special heart you know,” a vivacious four-year-old told the Irish Voice last weekend.

Little Adam was born with a rare congenital heart condition. It has been an extremely difficult first couple of years for Adam and his family, but things are getting better.

“It’s going to be a great Christmas this year,” said Adam’s mom Lisa.

Adam has been through several invasive surgeries since his birth. His last surgery was this past August, and since then Adam has shown signs of great improvement.

“Look at him, he is just like any other four-year-old,” laughs Lisa as her precious son drags his little two-year-old sister into the living room to play with their Lego.

Over a fine lunch spread last Saturday at their Yonkers home, Adam and his family shared with the Irish Voice the joy they now feel that their son is finally living a normal life.

Lisa, 39 and John, 33, are Irish immigrants. Lisa hails from Co. Cork and John from Co. Fermanagh. The happy couple met in a local establishment a few years ago.

When they became pregnant with their first child they shared the joy and excitement every couple experiences before the arrival of their unborn. However, their world came crashing down around them when Lisa was 35 weeks was pregnant.

A scan at St. John’s Riverside Hospital in Yonkers revealed that something was seriously wrong with their precious baby.

Memories Of Rosemary’s Fiftieth Birthday Party

Phil Cronin is a man who is well travelled and half way around the Planet he has flown
Yet when he talks of Millstreet in Duhallow you always hear him mention the word home
And though he’s raised his children in Australia and he left Ireland many years ago
He still talks with s strong Duhallow accent an accent that he never will outgrow.

I met him at Rosemary Kelleher’s fiftieth birthday party with Kitty his endearing Irish wife
And they look well and young despite the passage of time and they don’t look ravaged by the cares of life,
Phil Cronin drank his beer and talked of Millstreet and back the roads of memory he did go
To the people he knew in the Town of Millstreet the Learys and John Sing and Mister O.

Jimmy Cronin

Jimmy Cronin is a character of Millstreet
And in Duhallow his is a well known face
For years he coached the Millstreet young footballers
And he became known beyond his home place.

Jimmy Cronin had a stroke but he recovered
A young man at heart though in years getting old
In Millstreet Town his name will live forever
For he is one who has a ‘heart of gold’

Millstreet’s Most Unforgettable Character

It’s a long way from Australia more than twelve thousand miles away
From County Cork and Ireland and the fields of Claraghatlea
But Mick Kelleher made that air trip he returned on holiday
And though the journey proved quite tiring he enjoyed his three months stay.

With him came his charming Aussie wife Rosemary and his lovely family
To live with him in the old place where he once lived happily
In the fields by Clara mountain where he hunted as a boy
Those were happy days for Michael and good memories never die. [read more …] “Millstreet’s Most Unforgettable Character”

First Millstreet Town Park Committee Honoured and Remembered

To honour and remember the first Millstreet Town Park Committee members (and also people who have contributed so much to the care of the Town Park over many years) a special plaque has recently been put in place at Millstreet Town Park. This gesture is so very appropriate in that those wonderfully community-spirited people in the Ireland of the 1950s were so supremely far-seeing and conscious of what a magnificent setting like our Town Park (within our town) would mean for future generations. And how right they were! What a truly exquisite amenity we have in our town. Very special credit is due not only to the early pioneers of this great project and who are recalled on the impressive plaque but also to the present-day Town Park Committee. We thank Jerry Lehane for alerting us to this most deserving of monuments which is now permanently in place at the Town Park. Long may future generations enjoy such a marvellous environmental gem. Telling the time without a watch

In this audio clip which appeared on HeritageCertificate.ie recently, the late Andrew Lynch, Ballydaly, recalls that it was possible to tell the time in the country side without looking at a watch, by looking at where the sun shone on the mountain, and by the noises from farmers and animals all around.
