Millstreet meeting leaves unanswered questions for Dairygold

2012-12-20 Dairygold Co-op About usDairygold’s new milk supply agreement has divided opinion among the co-op’s members, with many having signed up, but many more unhappy or seeking clarity on the seven-year contract.
At least one young farmer who attended the meeting, hosted by ICMSA in Millstreet on Tuesday evening, could see the positive side of planning for post-quota expansion.
“I can understand why people have a problem with signing up for a seven-year contract. The older farmers may have their doubts about being stuck in a contract for seven years, but I don’t have any huge issue with the contract.

Free Talk ‘Garden Birds’ by Jim Wilson

Renowned author and broadcaster, Jim Wilson will be giving a talk on Irish garden birds at the Secret Garden on Sunday October 28th (3-4pm). 2012 National Dairy Show Champion

The Frawley family from Limerick being presented with the trophy for their cow “Ridgefield Dundee Portea” who was crowned 2012 National Dairy Show Supreme Champion in the Green Glens, Millstreet, which was the 30th anniversary of the show.

Apple Day – come and join us in the celebration of all things apple

Free Event – Apple Day This Sunday, 21st October (1 – 5pm) will be the fourth year that we have held an Apple Day. For those of you that grow or are thinking of growing apples, the delightful John McNamara of McNamara Nurseries will be on hand to answer questions and offer advice. He always brings along a selection of apples from the orchard so that you can taste different apples.We’ll also be joined by Ballyhoura Apple Farm who will be offering tastings and selling their award-winning juices and apple products.

We’ll be serving hot soup in the tea room from 1pm, along with a selection of apple treats, and there will be apple fun and games – including the longest peel competition!

Free talk/demo on Autumn Vegetables

This Sunday 23rd of September 3-4pm, at the Secret Garden Centre, there will be a demonstration in the veg garden on autumn jobs- planting garlic and autumn onion sets, green manures and winter greens. Please wear outdoor clothing and suitable footwear.

R.T.A.I. Visits Exquisite Millstreet Country Park Today

The Cork Branch of the Retired Teachers’ Association of Ireland visited Millstreet Country Park today (19th Sept. 2012). They were wonderfully impressed by the sights and sounds experienced from the Park Transporters as well as the delicious meal prepared by the dedicated Staff of “Nibbles in the Park”. The weather was excellent for the very enjoyable visit. (S.R.)

It was so very fortunate that singer supreme, Annmarie O’Riordan just happened to be visiting the Park with her parents, Eileen and Humphrey.   Annmarie totally charmed the visitors with her great rendition of “Bold Thady Quill” during which many of the Retired Teachers joined in.   Many of the visitors intend to return to [read more …] “R.T.A.I. Kitten found near Murphy’s Terrace

A black & white, tame, male kitten was found last weekend crying in a hedge near Murphy’s Terrace just outside Millstreet. Above are two photo’s of the kitten. He is very friendly and seems to have just strayed away from home, so the woman who found him would love to rehome him again a.s.a.p. If that doesn’t happen, she’s isn’t able to keep him (though she would love to), and will look for a new home for him. He has received all vaccinations & is now ready for his new home. Newmarket Horse and Dog Show

Because of the exceptionally bad ground conditions this year, Newmarket Horse and Dog Show will take place on SUNDAY 8th JULY at GREEN GLENS, Milstreet. Late entries are now being taken.

It promises to be a fun filled day with horse and dog shows, trade stands. pets corner, pet shop, artisan foods, arts and crafts. And for mans’ best friend we have 9 different classes including the prestigious Munster Dog Championship with a prize fund of €400. We also have some novelty ones such as Fancy dress and dog with the best trick.Entries will be taken on the day and we hope to kick off at 1pm.

Sustainable Gardening Day

Saturday 12th May is Sustainable Gardening Day at The Secret Garden. Come along between 1 – 5pm and you will find a selection of demonstrators and information on everything you need to know to make your garden more healthy and efficient:

* Composting. We’ll be joined by Donal O’Leary from Waste Down and Master Composters (yes, they really are called that) from Stopfoodwaste.ie who will be deomstrating how to make your own compost both with compost bins and wormeries. Donal will be selling wormeries on the day, plus Cork County Council have kindly sponsored a wormery for a free prize draw.

* Organic Gardening – Kitty Scully from RTE’s ‘How to Create a Garden’ will be on hand to answer questions and will be doing demonstrations at 1.30, 2.30 and 3.30 in the veg garden. Kitty has boundless energy and enthusiasm and a wealth of knowledge so this is a great opportunity to learn from an expert.
