St Patrick’s Day Parade in Carriganima
The popular St Patrick’s Parade in Carriganima took place Friday at 3 pm and a festive atmosphere prevailed around the village. The Millstreet Pipe Band opened the proceedings while Pat Lane led the Parade as Grand Marshall. The festivities carried on until late with Peter Lane providing music in the Pub. All proceedings are in aid of the Air Ambulance based in Rathcoole. Once again Geraldine Dennehy captured the moments superbly, well done to everyone involved.
St Patrick’s Day Parade 2022
After two years of absence due to Covid19 the Millstreet St Patrick’s Parade returned bigger and better than ever. The Town wash awash in green and gold with a festive atmosphere about. Grand marshal for 2022 was Joanne O’Riordan whom returned to her native Milllstreet to bestow us with the honour. Our Pipe Band started the proceedings showcasing their new uniforms. The rain showers of earlier dried and everyone enjoyed a mild dry afternoon. Thank you to Geraldine Dennehy for stepping into the shoes of Seán Radley and I am sure did him proud. Seán is recovering well from his recent surgery and is looking forward to contributing to Millstreet.ie in the near future.
Does anyone remember this?
The wren, the wren, the king of all birds,
On St Stephen’s Day he was caught in the furze,
From bush to bush, from tree to tree at Drishane Castle he broke his knee,
Up with the kettle & down with the pot,
Give us our money & let us be off.

Feis Laitiarain Cullen
Feis Laitiarain Cullen recently held a local commemoration for Feis Laitiarain on St Laitiarain’s Day 25-Jul-2020. The history of the Feis was presented along with folklore associated with St. Laitiarain. There was a tribute to Diarmuid O’Cadhla (Der Kiely) RIP and his grandfather Sean O’Cadhla who set up the first Feis plus stories, pipes, music and songs. The first Feis was held in Cullen 122 years ago, in 1898 and has been kept alive ever since. The Feis was particularly challenged during the troubles of 1918 when planes flew low to the ground overhead to try to disrupt the Feis, but the Feis goers held strong and continued with the Feis.
Local musicians, world class piper, singers and story tellers performing here carry the music nationwide and beyond with outstanding comments from people from here to New Zealand on social media outlets during the Covid-19 lockdown. They represent the local Comhaltas, Pipe Band and Scór GAA branches and have achieved several County, Provincial, All Ireland and World titles.

On the children’s journey to school lay a fort or lios as it is called in Irish, through which they should pass. One day as the children were passing through the fort a fairy woman met them and spoke to one of them, a girl called Nora whom she took with her into the fort, the other members of the family proceeding on their way to school. Nora, a little girl of about seven years used to be rocking a cradle in which was a baby, inside the fort, while the rest of her brothers and sisters were in school. Just as the latter would be returning the fairy woman would meet them again accompanied by the little girl Nora, whom she would allow go home with them.
This went on for a considerable time. The Twomey boys and girls would attend school, all but one, Nora, who would spend her day rocking the cradle inside the fort. A cow got sick on Nora Twomey’s farm one day and Nora’s mother told her to [read more …] “The Woman of the Fort”
