What a wonderful day!!!!!!!
We would like to share our wonderful experience of Feb 26th 2021 in our surgery. We began the roll out of the Covid 19 vaccine to our over 85 yr old patients. These are amazing people who have contributed so much to society in there own unique, quiet and unassuming ways.
The excitement, enthusiasm and positivity was palpable. As they arrived with their helpers and drivers dressed in their finery and with tears in there eyes, they could hardly contain their excitement.
Comments like “when was a visit to the doctors so exciting?” One lady said “this is more exciting than having a baby!”. Another gentleman on receiving his vaccine wanted to sing. Others felt like dancing and while maybe all could not have physically danced, in their minds and hearts they could have danced all night. Some told us that they had not “dressed up” or had been outside their homes in almost a year. No medicine could be more beneficial then the laughter and jovial atmosphere. While they all loved the welcoming atmosphere, one gentleman said “all we are missing is the music” and of course all missed the hugs.
We were humbled and privileged to have shared this experience with such wonderful people and we know from speaking with colleagues that such experiences were shared in all medical centres and doctors surgeries.
As we look forward to their return visit and we were all overjoyed to see them leave the surgery with a pep in their step.
We are grateful for the unrelenting work and dedication of our researchers and scientists in developing the Covid vaccines.
Dr Liam and I would like to take this opportunity to thank all our staff for their hard work over the last 12 months and for all their help in successfully rolling out the vaccine.

Millstreet Community Gym

It is with a heavy heart that we have to announce the temporary closure of our gym, beginning 9pm on Wednesday 21st October in response to the Governments decision to move to Level 5 of the national COVID 19 plan. All memberships will be frozen from the time we close our doors until the day we reopen.

We look forward to seeing everybody again once we are permitted to re open for business. Until then, we ask that everybody please stay safe, stay active and stay healthy. However, we will not be going quiet on social media. We will still be providing you with home workouts, tasty recipes and quick tips to help still progress while at home. If anybody would like a custom program made for them that utilises the equipment they have available to them, please get in touch and we will arrange something for you free of charge. This will be a challenging time for some people, so please stay in touch, check in with each other and reach out if you find that you are struggling. We are all in this together.

The Influenza Pandemic of 1918-1919 – How it affected Millstreet

During this Covid-19 pandemic, it has often been compared to the Influenza Pandemic of 1918/1919. We were wondering how it affected this area, so we delved into the records to try to figure it out.

Surprisingly, what we found was that there was no big spike in deaths locally at that time compared to the surrounding years (see the graph below **). So we though that maybe it didn’t affect the Millstreet area at all … but we were wrong.

When we looked at the case by case influenza and pneumonia figures (flu was often misdiagnosed as pneumonia) in the death registers, we saw that around March 1919, there was a big jump in numbers when about 20 died from flu and pneumonia. This coincided with what was referred to as the third wave of that pandemic in Ireland, and is easily seen by the yellow spike in the graph below. The smaller orange spike (November 1918) also coincided with the second wave of the pandemic in Ireland.

In total, we think about 30 people died locally died from it over the duration of that pandemic.

Some families here got destroyed by it … Twomeys of Islandhill lost 3 in a week, Sullivans of Umeraboy lost three in a month, Butlers of Liscahane lost two in a fortnight. The one very surprising thing  though is that most of the deaths were people that died locally were in their 20’s and 30’s, which we were unaware of but was a feature of that disease.

If that many died in the spring of 1919, then about 1,000 must have been infected locally at the time. That’s a lot of sick people.

Below we first look at the disease in Ireland, and also we break down the death registers to see those that died from it locally, when they got it, and where they were from: [read more …] “The Influenza Pandemic of 1918-1919 – How it affected Millstreet”

Millstreet C.V. Support Group

Millstreet C.V. Support Group

We are a volunteer community group set up to help people who fear being exposed to the COVID-19 virus or who may have to self-isolate. They may have the virus or have been in close contact and as a result are confined to their homes.
The group consists of almost 20 volunteers so far. We have two vans and a array of personal skills. We can provide assistance by organising shopping and delivery of groceries, firing etc. All our services are totally free to the community.
If the pandemic develops and the requests for assistance change the group will evolve to meet these new demands where possible. We will be organising a mail drop of this information to every home in our area in the next few days. More volunteers would be extremely welcome.
For more information contact: Jeremiah Keating at 087 7932736 or Liam Flynn at 087 6380053.

Keeping Your Gut Healthy For Overall Well Being

Keeping Your Gut Healthy For Overall Well Being
Capabu Health Food Shop, Millstreet, Co. Cork

Did you ever notice that when your gut is healthy, your overall health and vitality improves? And when you eat the wrong food you feel awful? We have too much choice these days and we can lose track of ourselves with processed foods that destroy our gut health. The good news is that you are in charge of what you eat and your food choices are in your own hands. And in Ireland, we have wonderful food choices that are really healthy and increase our physical, mental and emotional wellbeing. As the wise person said “Food is Medicine” – or not!

In this one hour talk you will learn:

• Which foods cause inflammation and illness in the body and which foods help it.
• How when we absorb our food fully, it dictates how well we are nourished.
• How taking a break from food can have a great healing effect.
• The new science of food and gut health.
