In this House of Brede

In December 1974 there was an air of excitement in Millstreet as filming for part of the movie “In this House of Brede” took place at Drishane Castle. Adapted by James Costigan from the best-selling novel by Rumer Godden, In This House of Brede stars Diana Rigg (of the Avengers fame) as a widowed, fortyish business executive in search of a more meaningful life. She turns her back on the world of commerce and capitalism to enter a strict order of Benedictine nuns at Brede Abbey. Here, the peace of mind that Rigg seeks remains elusive, especially when her fidelity to her vows is questioned by the younger novices. Filmed on location at genuine convents in London and Ireland, In This House of Brede premiered February 27, 1975.

Above is a ten minute shortened version of the film, while below are some photos, and interesting extracts from newspapers. [read more …] “In this House of Brede”

Hollymount NS awarded at FÍS Film Project Awards

2014-11-06 Hollymount NS awarded at FÍS AwardsHollymount NS was delighted to take part in this year’s Fís Film project.
What is the FÍS Film Project? FÍS is a successful film project currently thriving in primary schools across Ireland. The initiative encourages children to explore the medium of film in the primary classroom developing essential skills in moving-image literacy, communication, teamwork, visual arts and even numeracy … oh yes, and it’s also lots of fun! (http://www.fisfilmproject.ie/ 5th Nov 2014).

The Junior Room developed and created a film entitled ‘The Fairytale of Hollymount NS’, based on a tale about Snow White who decided to send her dwarfs and the three little pigs to see the ‘best school in Ireland!’ Every child in the class took part in the piece. The final project was submitted to Tralee Education Centre. The film was screened in Siamsa Tíre as part of Kerry Film Festival and Hollymount NS was presented with a plaque in recognition of the project.

We were delighted to be told that the film had been forwarded to Fís Film National committee for consideration. We were invited to [read more …] “Hollymount NS awarded at FÍS Film Project Awards”

Listen to Ed’s Songs of Praise every Sunday night from 10pm to 1am, or if you miss it, you can listen back on the TodayFM Player.

Splendid Variety in This Evening’s LTV Broadcast….Due to Weather Conditions This Transmission Rescheduled for Broadcast at a Future Date

Dan Joe Kelleher of LTV has compiled a wonderful selection of past and present video footage for this evening’s LTV Sunday broadcast.   The following is the intended schedule:

5.30pm        Mass from St. John’s Well, Mushera in June 2013.  This is a repeat showing by popular request.  The Celebrant is Fr. Jackie Corkery.

6.30pm        A variety of excerpts from various current and past programmes beginning with Macroom’s Annual New Year’s Day Hunt 2014.    This is followed by a brief visit to the 2013 Christmas Pantomime at the Briery Gap in Macroom entitled “Babes in the Wood”.  Next we have a recording from “Éigse” 2004 in Ballyvourney.   We then visit “The Rambling House” in Boherbue where hopefully we shall get to see one of the very best recordings ever of the traditional “Brush Dance”.   And we finish with a delightful “Round the Fireside” feature recorded in the home of a French Family who have been coming on an annual basis to this wonderful holiday home in Aubane and who are most interested and proficient in Irish and Breton traditional music.   This evening’s LTV transmission is scheduled to conclude at 8.30 or soon thereafter.   Happy viewing!      (S.R.)

UPDATE:  Weather conditions appear to have affected transmission equipment necessary for broadcasting on Channels 30 and 35 UHF which serve the Millstreet area.   Dan Joe has indicated that the above programme line-up will be retransmitted at a future date when the equipment faults are corrected.   It’s quite possible that the current broadcast may be available in the LTV1 Macroom area and its surroundings.   Apologies for this interruption in transmission but one has no control over weather related effects.   (S.R.)
