The Annual Johnny Hickey Memorial Spring Car Run organised by Millstreet Vintage Club will take place on today Sunday March 10th, this year the Event will be in Aid of the Running Costs of Facilities for St Johns Holy Well in Mushera near Millstreet which is a very Worthy Cause.
There is an opportunity to see some Cool Vehicles before they set out after 12 Noon today in Millstreet so why not come along to the Noel C Duggan Yard for a look.

Among the wonderful memories recalled by many of the late Denis Murphy – Patrick Lynch, a native of Ballydaly, shared a very special tribute to Denis which we share here:
“Denis Murphy, our next-door neighbor, was my first boss. Well, not my first boss, that would be my dad, but for sure my first cash-paying boss. 10p per day.
Denis, and his brother Tadghie lived next door, and both were idols to us. They drove Cortinas, had long-ish hair, listened to Mudd and Slade, turned up to Mass fashionably late (and more outrageously, left early), and read ‘The Sunday World’. I wanted to be them when I grew up.
Denis was, and still is, one of my favorite people. Back then, he was a god. He drove a blue MK 3 Cortina, always at considerable speed, later progressing to a blue Mazda 323. We would hear him pull out of his house and in no time fly past our place in a speedy blur of blue.
I have the vaguest memories of Denis and Tadghie’s mom, Hannah, but remember her fondly. Sadly, she passed when I was very young, leaving the Murphy men to fend for themselves. They had the kind of house I could just walk straight into without even knocking, and frequently did. Pat, their dad, was a gentleman. He often made me a cup of tea with some store-bought brown bread, (a novelty for me), and answered my many, many questions.
One evening I popped in and their family friend, Gerry Shovlin, had stopped by for dinner. Gerry was sporting an odd hat, and at one point Denis reached over and pulled it off, revealing a freshly shaved head. Gerry was mortified and we all howled with laughter.
I was in Poland when Pat passed and I remember being terribly saddened. He was the kindest of men.
An early memory (when I would have been about 10 years old) was the day Denis laid the foundation for his home. Denis decided to build next to his dad, though the plot came with the penalty of being slightly closer to the Lynch Mob. That home proved to be a foundation of sorts for me in many ways, and we were really blessed to have neighbors like the Murphys.
On ground-break day, a JCB dug out the trenches, and tradition called for every able man from the neighborhood to turn up, mix concrete, and lay the foundations. To my very young self, this was a huge event. I remember it as a sunny Sunday, with lots of people and tea, and John Corkery and I buzzing around with excitement.
The Table Quiz will take place on Friday 1st March 2024 at 8pm in The Wallis Arms.
This Quiz has become an annual fundraiser to help 5th Year Students from Millstreet Community School who are going on pilgrimage to Lourdes with the Irish Pilgrimage Trust, to pay for their travel and accommodation. Aoife Casey & Holly Saunders (pictured below) are the 5th years going this year and they will be Student Helpers with Goup 126.
Thanks to the wonderful support of the community for the bake sales in the Parish Centre before Christmas, the girls’ travel and accommodation costs have been covered (€750/per person). However Group 126, along with all other groups taking part in the pilgrimage, are expected to raise €14,000 each year to cover the travel/accommodation costs of all the young people with special needs (known as ‘guests’) who are travellingwith their particular group. All funds raised from the table quiz will go to the fundraising efforts of Group 126.
Tables: €40/team of four. There will be a raffle. Everyone is welcome to take part in what has become a great community event in support of the students.

Millstreet Vintage Club held a Tractor Run last Sunday in aid of the Millstreet Pitch and Putt Club,the Event was based out of the Canon O`Donovan Centre in Millstreet and both Dan O`Riordan and Danny Lane laid on a very Scenic Route to the West of the Town but unfortunately on the day the poor Weather conditions that prevailed didn’t show off the wonderful scenery that was to be found along the Route, but despite the weather the Event was enjoyed by the Participants and organiser Dan O`Riordan would like to thank everyone that took part and gave there support and says thanks to all the Marshals who stood out in awful weather to keep the Event running smoothly,as well as that also Dan would like to thank Mick Duggan and Ita Fitzgerald for keeping the Event on track and the road clear for the Tractors along the route and also to the Crew at sign on for all there help and to the Media and Photographers for there support and finally to all the crew at the Canon O`Donovan Centre for looking after everyone so well and for the use of there facility last Sunday, we hope you had a great day out and we look forward to your company again very soon.

Patricia also remembers the late Bridget King who certainly enriched all our lives. Patricia writes as follows: “In loving memory of a dear Friend – Bridget King – I knew Bridget for a long time. She had a very interesting life. She travelled a lot. She took great interest in people and in her very many Friends. She appreciated everything that was done for her. We had a great chat before Christmas and she thoroughly enjoyed talking especially to those from the Millstreet area. She will be sadly missed by her Family and many Friends. Marking its 60th year (like the Ordination Year of Fr. Seán Tucker) members of Millstreet Pitch & Putt Club will feature on William Fitzgerald’s Country Show tonight (22nd Feb. 2024) at 10pm on Cork Music Station outlining the wonderful history of the Club as well as the upcoming MVC Tractor Run this Sunday as a special fundraiser for the Pitch & Putt Club.

Millstreet Community School Presents “Say Cheese!”
The TY School Play, a cornerstone of the TY/5th Year experience in MCS for three decades, returns next week, so make sure you don’t miss a fantastic night out. The Show runs from Tuesday to Thursday, 27th, 28th and 29th Feb., starting at 7:30 pm.
The play is a dark comedy in which characters are poised on the knife-edge between hilarious absurdity and hysterical breakdown. It’s described as a “well-wrought, cleverly shaped drama with a keen sense of absurdity”.
The cast, set design and director teams have been working hard and all is coming together nicely, and we’re looking forward to a great Show to continue the fine tradition established in MCS.
