12th Old Time Threshing and Vintage Afternoon Sunday July 25th. 2010

For any outdoor event the weather makes all the difference, and this year the sun blazed down in Cullen for the hosting of the 12th Old Time Threshing and Vintage Afternoon, we were blessed with brilliant summer sunshine that lifted the spirits of all who attended “the Threshing” as well as honouring our own patron Saint – Laitiarain. Incidentally it was also Macra’s “Know your neighbour Weekend”.

The vintage enthuastics arrived early on the day, many having travelled long distances to display their rare items, which ranged [read more …] “12th Threshing and Vintage in Cullen”

Archbishop Burke in Cullen

At 5pm on Thursday, 8th July 2010 in the Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Cullen,  concelebrated Mass was celebrated with, as the main celebrant, Archbishop Raymond Leo Burke who not only has been the Archbishop of St. Louis, U.S.A. but is now one of the most high-ranking prelates in the Vatican. On June 27, 2008, Pope Benedict XVI appointed Archbishop Burke to the office of Prefect of the Supreme Tribunal of the Apostolic Signatura, a position equivalent to that of Chief Justice of the United States Supreme Court, or President of the Conseil d’Etat of France. As such, immediately after the Pontiff, Archbishop Burke holds the highest judicial office in the entirety of the Roman Catholic Church.   His court, as the final possibility for most all appeals unless they go to the Pope, ranks higher than the Rota or the Apostolic Penitentiary. In terms of the importance of his Curial post, Archbishop Burke is the second-highest ranking American prelate at the Vatican after  Cardinal William Levada, who took Pope Benedict’s place as prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith.   And, as you may well recall, Cardinal Levada celebrated Mass in Kilcorney Church on a recent Easter Sunday.    It was Tom Goggin who very kindly alerted us to that Kilcorney visit a few years ago.   So having two such direct links to the Vatican with such close connections to our area is truly quite phenomenal.   Here we share images of the Archbishop’s Culllen visit where he was truly delighted to meet with relatives (among whom were the Cremin and McSweeney Families as well as others) and Friends.   Fr. Paddy O’Byrne knew the Archbishop in U.S.A. and we thank Fr. Paddy and also Photographer, Sheila Fitzgerald for alerting us to the visit.    William Fitzgerald and I recorded an LTV2 interview with the wonderfully obliging and cheerful Archbishop. 'TIME TO LEAVE ASIDE THE DOOM': Minister for Enterprise Batt O'Keeffe with 'Sunday Independent' Editor Aengus Fanning

GETTING a straight answer from Batt O’Keeffe is no easy thing. As befits a true son of Millstreet, the new Minister for Enterprise has about half a dozen ways of saying as little as possible.

from an article in today’s Sunday Independant

Obviously Batt is from Cullen … but what are they trying to say about us in Millstreet? It wouldn’t be like us to fudge our words, would it now !  😉 😉

Michael Cremin, Grand Marshall of Bergen County St.Patricks Day Parade

The day was an Irish green, albeit with a little gray, and although it came two weeks later than originally planned — and just more than 10 days after its raison d’etre (due to a horrendous nor’easter storm) — the 29th annual St. Patrick’s Day parade, led by Millstreet native Michael Cremin as Grand Marshall still showed marchers and spectators what it’s like to be Irish, even for just a day.

So, even though Sunday was a bit gray, the green did manage to shine through after all.

Cullen to be twinned with Tokyo?

… Tuesday was one hell of a day for Minister Batt O’Keeffe. First, he got promoted in the Cabinet reshuffle. Then he was buttonholed by the irate wife of a snubbed back-bencher. And finally, he attended a dinner organised by the class of 1963 from St Brendan’s College, Killarney.

Some people might remember 1963 as the year JFK was assassinated. But in Batt’s eyes, 1963 will forever be remembered as the year St Brendan’s lost the All-Ireland schools’ final by a point to St Mel’s of Longford.

Despite being the only Corkman on the team, Batt was the captain, displaying early leadership skills.

“I’m in the diocese of Kerry, but from the village of Cullen, which is near Millstreet on the Cork border,” he explains.

I tried to twin Cullen with Tokyo when I was in Japan last week.

Tuesday’s knees-up was arranged long ago and it was pure coincidence that it fell on the night of Batt’s promotion. His classmates and team-mates …

Cullen’s golden jubilee of rebirth

FIFTY years of gaelic games was acknowledged at a celebratory function by Cullen GAA in the Dromhall Hotel, Killarney on Saturday night.

When the Duhallow Board was set up in 1933, a GAA Club was formed in Cullen, the first President was Dr. Pat O’Callaghan, who twice won Olympic gold medals. Success came early to the club on capturing Duhallow Junior Football titles in 1936 and 1939.

During the war years, Cullen GAA fell into decline. However in 1959, Cullen GAA to re-establish itself as a dynamic outlet within its community. At times, success has been lean but with excellent playing facilities and a flourishing juvenile structure, the fortunes of Cullen GAA came on leaps and bounds.

Current chairman Dan Dennehy explained the second coming of Cullen GAA stemmed from a Vocational School in the Village, one of the teachers had three All-Ireland medals with Cork.

Broadband in your area?

Cork Area
Map of Eircom phone exchanges in Cork, and which ones are DSL enabled (click for full details)

Recently I was reading that Eircom had no plans to roll out broadband to Cullen so I decided to have a look and see what the story was. Essentially, Eircom is saying that it has no plans to upgrade the following local exchanges:

  • Cullen
  • Carriganima
  • Lyre
  • Berneys Cross

Their reason is mainly economic: that there’s not enough houses locally to justify the cost of upgrading the exchanges.

I know that PermaNet are able to supply wireless broadband to some of these areas, but if you want it through your phone line, you’ll really have to get onto your local representatives to push to get it changed.

It’s not that long ago since we had no broadband in Millstreet (about 6 years now), and the only reason that Eircom upgraded its servers to DSL at the time was because they heard that PermaNet were setting up in Millstreet, and wanted to grab market share before PermaNet could set up their infrastructures. As usual, it’s business before people.
