Jack Lane Speaks at the Kerryman’s Table on 19th August 2012

Historian supreme, Jack Lane gave an outstanding address at the Kerryman’s Table, Mushera, Millstreet at noon on Sunday, 19th August 2012.   Jack emphasised the importance of the Butter Road and gave a very interesting history of the famous Road.   It was held during Heritage Week 2012 as well as on the very same Sunday as the celebration of the centenary of Aubane N.S..  (S.R.)

Flooding on Friday in Macroom

Following extremely heavy rain in the Macroom area on Friday evening a temporary flood resulted and traffic stopped until the main roadway leading to Cork was quickly cleared.  The road was cleared with the excellent assistance of the Gardaí, road authorities and residents.  (S.R.)

Very Successful Fundraising Tractor Run Mizen to Malin 2012 Cheque Presentation in Wexford in aid of Children’s Hospital, Crumlin, Dublin

Thanks to Michelle Walsh we have a selection of photographs which shows the presenting on Saturday, 18th August 2012, of the big cheque to Jerry who was representing the Children’s Hospital in Crumlin.   This superb presentation of the cheque of €5,310.00  took place at Taghmon, Co Wexford and shows (on extreme right) Philip Pomeroy (Millstreet) and two of his cousins Patrick and Dominic McCrae from Pettigo in County Donegal, along with their Wexford friends who completed the tractor run on 21/22 July from Mizen Head to Milan Head in under 24 hours.
They also celebrated Patrick’s birthday on the night!  (S.R.)

Calling All Kellehers…Wallis Arms Hotel Meeting on Friday, 24th August

The following request from Rosaleen Underwood:
The Shannon-Kelleher group are descended from Catherine Kelleher (believed to have been born ca1818, daughter of Patrick Kelleher and Mary Kane or Keane), and her first husband, Martin Shannon of Dublin. She is thought to have come from the Ballydesmond / Boherbue / Millstreet area, and the family may have originally come from Kerry.
 
The 12 Australians comprising the Shannon-Kelleher group will be in Millstreet on Friday, 24th August and are hosting a get-together for any Kellehers in the area in the hope that they will meet some relations or anyone who can tell them more about the Kellehers. This will be in the Wallis Arms in Millstreet at 10.30am.

Millstreet Pipe Band at Béal na mBláth 2012

Pictured beside the replica of Michael Collins’s famous Rolls Royce Armoured Car, “Sliabh Na mBan” Millstreet Pipe Band who played at the 90th Anniversary Commemoration Ceremony in Béal na mBláth on Sunday, 19th August 2012.   Tim O’Shea of Millstreet Pipe Band indicates that the Band has had the honour of playing at this highly prestigious event for the past 55 years which is certainly a very significant achievement.   We thank Band member, Marie Twomey for the two excellent photographs.  (S.R.)

Inspiring Mizen Head to Malin Head Charity Tractor Run 2012

A royal welcome awaited the wonderfully courageous Tractor Team at Pomeroy’s “Clara Inn”, Millstreet on Saturday afternoon 21st July as they took a well deserved break for a delicious meal during their 24 hour Charity Tractor Run from Mizen Head to Malin Head – a distance of 630km – all in aid of Children’s Medical and Research Foundation,  Our Lady’s Children’s Hospital, Crumlin, Dublin.  (S.R.)

The various tractors and jeeps as well as the motor bike were all given special names and they had their own fuel supply and a very dedicated Safety Officer.   Members of the group are related to the Pomeroy Family and Philip Pomeroy himself was a member of the inspiring Team who undertake this amazing project annually in aid of [read more …] “Inspiring Mizen Head to Malin Head Charity Tractor Run 2012”

Austin’s Container is Greeted with Great Joy in Moldova

In early June (see 10th June) we shared a feature showing Austin Long’s lorry container being fully loaded with a huge variety of very useful items – all in aid of a richly deserving Orphanage in Moldova. Here now in July we note that the container has now arrived in Moldova to the utter joy of All. Well done indeed to Austin and indeed to the many superb Volunteers who have brought this splendid dream to reality. Killeagh Visitors Enjoy Millstreet Experience on Thursday

Three Recording Gems on CMS’s “Radio Treasures” 8-10 This Evening

One of three radio recordings to be featured on Cork Music Station this evening (Tues.10th July) took place here at Tarrant’s “Bridge Bar”, Millstreet on Friday last when a wonderful group of very talented singers including Catherine and Patrick Linehan from San Francisco shared some great songs and a very entertaining recitation.   Highlights of this recording are included in this evening’s “Radio Treasures” on www.corkmusicstation.com .  (S.R.)

Meeting Henry Healy in Moneygall, Co. Offaly Today

“STRINGS” Featured on BB1 NI Television This Evening

In a BBC1 NI television documentary this evening (6th July 2012) entitled “The Clipper Homecoming Festival” the local very talented musical group who have recently returned from Derry where both the North Atlantic Fiddle Convention plus the Clipper Festival took place – featured on the excellent television programme.   Here we show a still picture from the programme with renowned Presenter supreme, Gerry Anderson, doing a piece to camera as the group played in the background to the delight of all.  We arranged to record the programme for our Museum archive.  Well done indeed to “STRINGS” on performing in such a highly prestigious programme viewed by millions!   (S.R.)

A Very Happy 4th July to All Our American Friends

Canon John Fitzgerald, P.P. with Pat & Paul Steimle from Racine, Wisconsin, USA at St. Patrick’s Church, Millstreet on Friday, 25th May 2012. Pat & Paul were tracing roots in the area on that day. They arranged to visit Millstreet before joining a Group Tour of Ireland. The very friendly visitors were most impressed by the welcome and charm of Millstreet. “Strings” Live from NAFCo in Derry!

Thanks to Emer Foley-Twomey we have a pictorial update of the wonderful “Strings” Musical Group enjoying their current visit to Derry for the North Atlantic Fiddle Convention 2012 where some 180 fiddlers from all over the world are playing together. Now that must be some truly magnificent harmonic sound! Hopefully we may get to hear a recording of the splendid event sometime. (S.R.)

The wonderfully talented members of “Strings” leave Millstreet for Derry on Tuesday evening to participate in the North Atlantic Fiddle Convention 2012 being held in Derry. It is indeed very clear that the Millstreet Group (with a further talented musician from Rockchapel) will hugely impress all with whom they meet in Derry when one considers how superbly uplifting the recent truly excellent Strings Concert was in Drishane Chapel on 1st June 2012. Cloghoula N.S. Visits Trabolgan Holiday Centre

Meeting with Sonia O’Sullivan – Irish Ambassador Supreme

What a true privilege it was this afternoon to meet with world famous athlete and sportsperson supreme,  Sonia O’Sullivan near Cobh. It all happened so very fortunately as I was on a visit to Trabolgan Holiday Centre with Cloghoula N.S. who were on their very enjoyable annual school tour…more pictures of this very shortly. Special thanks to Pat O’Keeffe of Garryvoe with whom I was trained as a teacher and who was the person who alerted me to Sonia’s presence as we (Pat and I) met today by chance.    I reminded Sonia of her visit to a major event in Green Glens, Millstreet in the 1990s.   Hopefully we shall one day seen Sonia in Millstreet again.  Now, having been so inspired and motivated …. where did I leave those track shoes?!!  (S.R.)
