Dia is mhuire diobh go leir a Cairde and welcome to my weekly report.

The cold snap certainly caught us by surprise following the bout of lovely mild days of the previous weeks. As a result many people young and not so young have fallen victim of the flu. Baoichas le Dia it’s a fleeting thing and most people are back on their feet in a couple of days.

Our Christmas lights committee held a church gate collection in Millstreet and Ballydaly at the weekend and were delighted with the support that they got.

On next Sunday, November 27th the same group will hold the annual Christmas Market at the GAA Hall, from 12noon to five o clock. Please give them your best support as they are working very hard to ensure that our town will be brighter and more cheerful than ever this Christmas. The huge Christmas tree is already towering over the town Square.

The Market on Sunday is the place to go for many of your Christmas gifts and stocking fillers, the place to meet with friends and have a warming cup of tea and plenty of chat.

The 2017 calendar, which was organised by the Community Council has arrived from the printers and will be on sale at the Christmas Market and at the usual outlets around the town. The proceeds this time will be divided between the Mens Shed and the Pipe Band.

A very pleasant function was held at the Green Glens on Saturday night following the 6.30 Mass. Irelands only Steeple Jill, Angela Collins O Mahony, was there, and was played into the building by lone Piper, Gillian McCarthy(Burke). She came  for the launch of her exciting book, simply called “Irelands only Steeple Jill”.  Sean Radley was the MC and in his introduction he remarked that we had, not one but two Doctors in the House. Not Medical, but both Angela and Noel C, had both in the past, been awarded Doctorates in honour of the trojan work that they had done in their chosen routes through life.

The honours were done by Noel C Duggan, and following the launch Angela autographed copies of her book, some beautiful refreshments were served  and  lovely background music was provided by the local branch of Comhaltas Ceoltoiri Eireann .    Angela’s Book is another ideal Christmas gift. At €19.99.

Our Shops and stores are gearing up for the Christmas trade and please shop at home this year. Our town needs your support to survive, so do your bit to preserve the lovely things that we have.

The research into the history and cultures of Millstreet goes on and regular meetings are being held to bring the Story of our town up to date and have it displayed on modern signposts, for all who pass by to read.

Please be reminded that the Renewal  of the Community Text Alert System for 2017 will take place at the Wallis Arms Hotel on Tuesday November 29th, following the Crime Prevention Meeting. Members of the Gardai Siochana will attend. Please pass the word about this important event around so that everybody will come under the umbrella of the valuable system.
