Eily’s update – 10th May

Dia is mhuire diobh go leir a cairde and welcome.

It was an action packed weekend here in Millstreet with something for everyone regardless of age.

Starting off with the wonderful marriage of James Cronin, Kilmeedy and Teresa Moylan of Coole on Friday. The ceremony was held at the historic little church of St.Finbarr in Gougane Barra and was followed by the grand reception at the Celtic Ross Hotel in Roscarbery, with brilliant sunshine all the way.

On Saturday May 7th there was an outstanding response to the call for volunteers to join the Darkness to Light 5K walk in Killarney, in aid of Pieta House. A bus-full left the town at 2.30 am. While others travelled by car. By all accounts it was a joyous and an uplifting experience and the light rain did nothing to dampen the spirits of all those who took part.

Saturday night all roads led to the lovely village of Carriganima where the renowned Crystal Swing were appearing. By now we know that no event, very big or very small, is no bother to Carriganima. The lack of a venue to receive the multitudes wasn’t a problem.  A luxury marquee was erected plus a band stand and they were ready for the off.  Peter Lane of Blackwater Sound Fame was the curtain raiser and the famous Mother, Son and Daughter band took over at ten. Thanks to every safety precaution being taken, the event went off without a hitch.

I bet a lot of you do not know that it was LTV2 that put Crystal Swing on TV for the first time. They were “discovered” by our camera men at a launch in Midleton some years ago, they put them on our screen and the rest is history.

Listen to Eily’s Regional Report below:

For their contribution to  Feile na Bealtaine, our Active Retired Group held an afternoon Tea Dance at the Wallis Arms Hotel on Sunday from 2 to 5.30. A great crowd attended, some from Ovens by bus and others from many parts of the County. The music was provided by Peter Lane and the dance floor was full the whole time. At break time some lovely refreshments were served, before the dancing resumed. As an added feature the members of the Kanturk Red Cross provided some soothing hand massage to all and sundry. The remarks the whole time were, why don’t we have this more often.
There was a free raffle for some lovely prizes.
Well done to all those who organised this lovely event and who knows when Winter comes round again, our very own Tea Dance might become a regular occurance in Millstreet.

There’s an interesting note on the Mass leaflet this week, its about Tax Return Forms that  were sent out  people who contribute €250 a year towards  the church restoration fund. These  completed forms allow the Parish to reclaim tax on these donations. And in 2015 the Parish reclaimed a staggering €32,235  for donations  made in 2014. This substantial amount could be increased if more households returned completed forms.

For more information contact the Parish office 029 70043.
