On Tuesday night October 13th the monthly meeting of the Community Council was held at the Wallis Arms. It was attended by the head of our local Garda forc , Sgt Paul Lynch, at the invitation of the Community Council with a view of setting a Community Text Alert in the area. Seargant Paul gave a very interesting and detailed account of the crime situation in this area, which covers from Rathmore to Macroom and all areas in between.
Two members of the meeting volunteered to help set up the scheme. All those wishing to become members can ring the given numbers, leave their names and at a later date a meeting will be held.
Then everybody will get an opportunity to become a member. Community Text Alert is doing great work, where members are alerted to any suspicious happenings in there area.

Sgt Paul said that in time of need, or emergency, the best number to ring for help is 999, as this number is always answered.
Before leaving the meeting Sgt Lynch drew the meeting’s attention to the annual West Cork Garda Youth Awards 2015, which is sponsored by Super Valu. Young Recipients will be awarded in recognition of their outstanding achievements. So if you know of some young person whom you think is entitled to be recognised ,please give their details to Joe FitzGerald at our Super Valu Store. Awards will be presented at gala function which will be held at the Maritime Hotel in Bantry on Friday November27th at 7pm.
The Community Gym came in for comment at Tuesday night’s Community Council Meeting and the good news is that it is going well under the leadership of DeniseNeenan. Her contact number is 0871029979.
The celebrations at our Carnegie Hall on Wednesday October 14th led to a truly enchanted evening. Sean Radley excelled himself in putting on a program that was second to none. A program which tied in the history of Millstreet to places right around the world some reaching all the way to far away New Zealand.
Canon John was there to Bless the building and the plaque at the door was unveiled by Noel Buckley, Chairman of the Community Council to let all who enter know that this building was erected in 1912. John Paul O Shea, Lord Mayor of Cork County also attended as did many people of great note, far too many to be mentioned.
It was a night for talking and remembering ,and of exchanging stories of old ,and nobody wanted it to end. The nights entire program was filmed by LTV2 for posterity. Some lovely refresments were served , supplied by I R D Duhallow and enjoyed by all.
Our Town is getting a welcome uplift at the moment. The footpaths all the way from the Barretts Corner to the Bridge on the left hand side are to be replaced .It will I’m sure result in some traffic interruption, but when finished it will be real state of the art.
Meanwhile down on the banks of the Blackwater, work is progressing favourably on the long-awaited Bridge. The fine weather playing it’s own part in the success. Already the development is beginning to draw many sightseers .
A coffee morning in aid of Cope Mallow and Millstreet Hospital will be held at the GAA Hall on Thursday Oct 29th from 9.30 am to 1.30pm. Please support it well.

Our Men’s Shed is destined for great things at their new premises in the Macroom Rd. in the place formerly used by the firebrigade. They are open every Tuesday. From 10am to 1pm, and in the evening from 7pm.

The Annual Pony Show will be held at the Green Glens from Friday to Sunday this weekend. October 23 to 26th. This show is run every year for various charities,and always enjoys huge entries. It is for under 16 year olds with many parents working as volunteers. Admission is free and all are welcome.
In spite of all the talk about littering, it still remains a problem. Even out in rural areas. Some farmers have to patrol their land beside the road to pick up bottles and debris of all kinds, thrown over the fence from cars, before they can let their cattle out to graze.
