In search of the Mahoneys

I am researching my Irish heritage and from census records I am aware my great great great Grandfather Michael Mahoney (Mahony, as seen spelt this way in some websites) lived his last days with his daughter Kate O’Keefe and son-in-law Michael at House #5 Shanbally, Knocknagree. He died in 1901.
On 19th Feb 1846 Michael married Catherine Brosnahan at Rathmore with Nohaval and Kilcummin. I am trying to establish which church they were actually married in and whether that church still exists. I assume they lived in the immediate area all their married lives.
I am also trying to discover where they are buried. I am not sure in what year Catherine who may also have been known as Kate died but I assume it was before Michael in 1901.
I am aware they had at least one child, Daniel, who moved to New Zealand in the late 1870’s. Daniel was my great great Grandfather.
Any help would be most appreciated.

  2. Hi Grahame, ive just come across your article here. Michael Mahoney and Catherine Brosnahan are my great, great grandparents. I was born in New Zealand, and unfortunately my gandfather Michael Patrick Mahoney died before i was born, and my grandmother, Blanch Nellie Mahoney( nee Dennis) was quite old, so i never knew much about my family history. I understand that Michaels parents were Patrick Mahoney and Catherine Ahern, but im not 100% sure. If you recieve this, i would love to know more history.

    1. Hi Daniel,

I know in Grahame’s family there is a Michael born in Timaru about 1882, died about 1948. Does that timeline fit for your family? There is also a Patrick born 1885 in Timaru and died 1927 in Kaori. He married a Catherine but I don’t think her surname was Ahern. I think he had twin girls in 1913. What do you think your Michael’s dates are?

      1. Hi Mary,
My grandfather, Michael Patrick Mahoney was born in Timaru in 1882 and from what information i have, he died in Wellington in 1948, so that sounds the same,
his wife was Blanche Nellie Mahoney, nee Dennis. Michael’s parents were Daniel Mahoney and Maria nee Dillon. They emigrated from Ireland to NZ, not sure if it was before or after they were married, but i gather they settled in Timaru. Daniels parents were Michael Mahoney and Catherine Brosnahan or Brosnan. Michael was from Cork, Catherine was from Kerry. Michaels parents were Patrick Mahoney and Catherine nee Ahern, both born in the late 1700s, but i dont know much about them.
Its interesting learning about family history,

      2. Yes, definitely the same person, do you have any information about Michael Mahoney and Catherine Brosnahan or their parents.

  3. My great, grt grand mother, Mary O’Connor Mahoney came to Rochester NY in 1882 after husband John Mahoney died in Rathmore Kerry 1881. They had 11 children. Any info much appreciated. I travel to Ireland in Sept and trying to seek out relatives
