Ardnageeha Dispensary

Hi, my name is Pat O Riordan and I hail from Curraraigue and I am now living in Leap near Skibbereen. My mother Mai Mullane now diseased came from Ardnageeha Cullen. I am doing some research on the family. My uncle Con Mullane owned the land on which a doctor’s house and Dispensary was built.
I am wondering if there is any information available on when it was built, The names of the Doctors who worked there. I would appreciate any information or perhaps where I might be able to find information on the house a and the dispensary.

Kind regards, Pat O Riordan

  1. One of the most notable doctors so worked at the dispensary was Dr Pat O Callagahan the Olympic gold medal winner. He was also a great greyhound breeder.

    1. Hi Pat, It is worth looking at the street and trade directories for Cork City and County, some of these directories can be sourced on http://www.corkpastandpresent.ie/places/streetandtradedirectories especially the Guy’s City and County Almanac and Directory. If you look under the heading of Cullen will find the dispensary listed. Dr Michael McCarthy worked out of this dispensary in the early 1900s. He was one of eight children born in 1856 to John and Margaret McCarthy of Rathroe House and baptised in the Parish of Dromtariffe. He qualified as a doctor in 1885. In 1890 Michael married Louisa Gribbin in Whitby, Yorkshire. They had two children, Cecilia and Michael Charles. In the 1891 Census of England Michael is recorded as a registered medical practitioner in North Ormesby, Yorkshire. By the 1901 Census he and his family have moved to Warrington, Lancashire. Unfortunately Michael’s wife Louisa died and he then decided to return to Ireland with his two children and take up the position as medical practitioner in Cullen. The 1911 Census of Ireland records Michael and his children as living in Ardnageehy, Cullen. The household also records his sister Margaret (a widow) as living with them. Margaret’s husband Morgan of Johnstown House had been the Medical Doctor in Johhstown, Kilmichael but had died in 1906. Both Morgan and Michael qualified from university the same year. I’m unable to say when Dr Michael died, but his son Charlie died in 1933, aged 33 years and Cecila died in 1981 aged 84 years. The McCarthy Family of Rathroe House during the early to mid 1800’s were one of the more significant landowners in the area. I hope that this information is of some help to you in your research.

      1. Thank you very much I am fascinated about that information. We spent many days of our youth visiting and playing in the Doctors house as my Grandfather and Grandmother were living there then (late 50s to early 60s) I am not too sure how the got to live there. I never asked questions then. Thanks again for that wonderful information. If you have any other information, such when to House and Dispensary was built. I would be grateful on this. Thanks again
        Regards
        Pat O Riordan

  2. Your great grand father gave a 99 year lease to the health board, thus when the lease was up around late 50s he claim the property back. Doctors there were Dr Ryan followed by Dr. Michael Mccarthy about 1905 to 1938 I believe. Dr. Pat O’Callaghan was only temporary for short time. Then Dr. McCabe until approx 1947 then Dr. Twohil, before the property was reclaimed. The dispencery separate building opened on satusdays for Dr visit and payment of relief.
