Record Rainfall over Winter

In an article in today’s Examiner, stats are given for the rain that fell on us this winter:

– Records were broken during the last three months when 216% more rainfall than average fell at a monitoring station in Millstreet, Co Cork.
– A total of 998.4 mm fell (3ft 3.31) during December, January and February.
– The monitoring station has been in operation there since 1986.

On average we’d get about 1500mm of rain in Millstreet Town every year, and higher still the closer you get to the mountains around, so that’s a lot of our yearly rainfall over winter.

The rainfall data is from the Wastewater Treatment Plant on the Station Rd. There’s at least three locally located at:

  • the Carnegie Hall (since 1991),
  • the Waste Water Treatment plant (Station Rd) (since 1986), and
  • Mushera (since 2010)

… and we’d expect the station at Mushera to be much higher than the town.

(if anyone knows how to get access to the data on these gauges, we’d like to know)

  1. Hi Michael,
The gauge (or one of them anyway) is located at Tubrid and dad (John Enright) is the one measuring it every morning. I’m sure he would be happy to share any information on it ye would like!
