The Man Who Shattered Millstreet’s Dream

Bob Evans - former metalwork teacher at Millstreet Community School, and a superb footballerThis is for Bob Evans who retired today after many years of teaching at Millstreet Community School:

For years he’s lived and worked in Millstreet the man who shattered Millstreet’s dream
The day he kicked the equalizer for the Carbery football team
Fifteen thousand watched in Macroom some quite stunned by what they’d seen
When Millstreet were forced to a replay ‘thanks to Bob from Skibbereen’.

The replay was another fine game Millstreet matched them score for score
But when the ref blew the final whistle Carbery were to the fore
Millstreet fans were disappointed Carbery had won the day
But in that first game of missed chances Bobby Evans made them pay.

Millstreet had a fine team back then Coleman, Hartnett, Reen and Long,
The Burkes, the Hares and Thomas Kelleher they inspired the bards to song,
The Keneallys, Sheas and the McSweeneys, Barrett, Buckley and Humphrey Kelleher big and strong
We were thinking of a county but thought once more had proved us wrong.

Carbery had Hunt and Barron two big names and Bantry’s pride
And ace forward Tony Murphy proved a thorn in Millstreet’s side
And at the back Coakley in fine form done no harm to his esteem
But their hero was Bob Evans he put paid to Millstreet’s dream

Memories of what should or might be still keep coming back to me
And of what was a disappointment back in nineteen seventy three
That year in the County final Carbery lost to U.C.C.
But many say had it been Millstreet things might have gone differently.

How can one ever forget him the man who shattered Millstreet’s dream
He kicked the point that spoiled their party when Millstreet looked the winning team
Fifteen thousand watched in Macroom some quite stunned at what they’d seen
When Millstreet were forced to a replay ‘thanks to Bob from Skibbereen’.
