Eily’s Report – 11th November

Dia is Mhuire diobh go leir a Cáirde and welcome to my Report .

Fondest greetings on this wet, wet, wet morning. Where the constant rain has driven the nearby Finnow River to burst it’s  banks and flood the low lying planes of Geararoe. Last week we enjoyed some very pleasant early mornings and my constant companion every time was a cheeky little wren. There was no trace of any other bird, not even a robin. But this tiny little bundle of feathers and cocked tail kept me well entertained as he hopped from one level to another picking up some invisible morsels as he went along. In my travels  with Denise to Mallow on Monday the bright sunshine lit up the multicoloured Autumn colours along the way and having a driver made all the difference, left me free to admire the passing show. Le cúnamh Dé, fine days  will come again when this band of rain has cleared and don’t miss them.

The old people would say ‘things must have gone to the bad’, that would be if something of great significance had failed or changed for the worse. That was how I felt when I saw that Sean Radley was looking for financial help to keep his Museum going. Knowing Sean he is a man who doesn’t ask and I’ve known him to dip into his own pocket more than once to keep things afloat. But the Go-fund-me notice showed in no small measure how willing people are to help when they know that there was a genuine need. It is not surprising, yet it swells the heart to see the support that is flowing in.  And it only goes to show the regard that our people have for our local Museum and that we will always have good people who are ready and willing to support it.

The pictures of the past that Sean put on the web were great. It showed in no small measure the large number of people who walked in our Corpus Christi Parades of old. I could make out the renowned Toots Kelleher and other young men like him.  Rosary beads in his hand all intent on paying homage on the feast of Corpus Christi. Jackie Forde can be seen in the distance, complete with his bright blue sash, While he and many other members of The Catholic Young Men’s Society kept the procession moving in an orderly fashion.  The well known Bill O’Sullivan with hat in hand can be seen up front in one of the scenes. I can also make out Peter Dineen and I’m glued to them as I try to recognise more. It serves to remind us of the way things were.   As we ask ourselves, where did it all go?

Our 11.30 Mass last Sunday was made very special when Fr. Joe Tarrant Blessed the little children who were there with their parents in preparation for their first Holy Communion next year. On their way out there was a great gathering of people of all ages as they mingled in the bright sunshine. In the Chapel yard people meeting people of all ages and enjoying the chat. It reminded me of the old times, like the parade where Sundays were days for dressing up and going to Mass and gathering in one place and catching up with the happenings of the week. What a pity it is that we have, almost lost, this wonderful ritual in our society. It was a lot more than going to Mass, it was also a very important social gathering.
