Dia is Mhuire diobh go léir a Cáirde and welcome to my report.
A week of exciting Leaving Cert Results gone and an even more exciting one here this week . Last week we saw many happy faces as the long awaited Leaving Cert Results became a reality and now that our young people have received their marks they anxiously await the announcement of places on tomorrow Wednesday. It is then they will have to make choices according to places. The whole course of a life could change because of a number and while we wish them the very best we turn our thoughts to the tiny tots who will be heading off to school for the very first time. Also the boys from the Convent Presentation school who will be going to the Boys National for the first time. In some cases twins who will be split up for the first time. Others progressing from Nationals to the Community school. Lots of changes ,but we are confident that our wonderful teachers and other staff will make the transitions run smoothly.
The weather is having a say this time also. In previous years when we had bad summers the weather often changed and became summerlike just as the schools opened. But this year it’s in the reverse. Following many weeks of pleasant sunshine temperatures are falling and so is the rain. Welcome be the Will of God. The surge in traffic will made roads and streets much busier and drivers will be asked to take extreme care. Especially at bus stops, school gates, and crossings.
And still with schools don’t forget to tune in to Kerry Radio on next Saturday from 9 to 11, to hear Sr. Mary Lucey, a past Pupil, telling the story of her 31 years on the Missions.
Can anybody explain the fruit situation this year. Every fruiting bush and tree is laden down with the weight of it’s crop. Our country is not geared for surplus amounts and it is so regrettable to see the beautiful plums etc falling off the trees. The apples are hardly ripe yet but when they are the story will be the same. There is nothing as nice as home grown tomatoes, but again when there is a glut waste can not be avoided. It’s a great time to take seeds and cuttings and spread them around. Today I watched from my window a little bird feeding on the seeds of a very large thistle ,plucking away at the furry top and savouring the tiny seeds. The second clutch of birds in the shed have taken to the skies and they’d make your day to watch them swinging and swirling in the air.
Our town is full of things to do and those who kept the flower beds and tubs in full bloom during the dry spell have to be lauded. Not least among those who tend our lovely Grotto at Liscahane. Members of our Community Council are busy preparing the new gym at the West End, formerly the town’s cinema. On next Saturday they have pulled out all the stops to hold a very novel fundraiser in our town Square. The popular Active Retired Group member, Mary Hickie has kindly invited them to hold a party in her very historic yard just off the Main Street. Mary’s place dates back to the time of the Troubles at the turn of the last Century. Back then it was a large walled Guards Barracks. Complete with prison cells and gates. From the reign of her father-in-law, Jack Sean Gabha Hickie who was a veteran of the fight and spent a prison term in Spike Island, with many other locals, it was a thriving hardware store and many farm implements were put on display in the front yard where this First of it’s Kind Party will be held on this coming Saturday. By all accounts it is almost sold out and tickets were booked on line only at €40 each. I needn’t tell you weather will play a big part on it’s success and we wish the organisers all the very best with this new exciting venture. In my own early days with the Community Council we had to raise a lot of money over the years for different worthy causes, The American Tea party springs to mind and was not all that different from the fundraiser at Mary’s on Saturday. There are two sittings one a 5 and one at 8.pm. Join with me and wish them luck.
Our pipe band was busy again this weekend following their trip to the Rose of Tralee Festival last week. This time they were playing at Béal na Bláth for the Michael Collins Memorial as they have done for many years, We thank them very sincerely for being a wonderful asset to our town and never fail to keep our flag flying at any important event.
As always Sean Radley misses nothing and on Saturday last he met a group of cyclists who are taking part in ‘Jude’s Journey’ cycling from Malin Head to Mizin head for a very good cause. Sean got their story and you can hear it tonight Tuesday on Cork Music station from 9.30.
A very successful Coffee morning was held at Reen’s Pharmacy on Friday last, in aid of the popular charity Jack and Jill A great crowd supported it and were treated to some of Mary Buckley’s Award winning scones.
The O’Mahony Family, Clara, Jerry, Annmarie, Niamh and Mary celebrated the tenth anniversary of their much loved daughter, Eimear’s passing at the age of 29. They held a Coffee Morning at their beautiful home in her memory for the Irish Kidney Foundation and recently they presented a cheque for €11,500.42 for this worthy cause. The O’Mahony Family want to thank all those who contributed and helped them in any way.
ARA Members may be interested to know that The Kall & Dynne Cafe will be closed this Thursday.
Next Sunday is the Eve of September, I wonder will there be a Fair. It was a well known date back in the day. We all dressed up in the best we had and went to see who was in town. Men on horses, with shiny polished boots and saddles trotting up and down the street to the envy and admiration of all. But sure they wouldn’t give us a look. But we still enjoyed the day.
