Eily’s Report – 19th August

Dia is Mhuire díobh go léir a cáirde and welcome to my Report.

What a week it has been, weatherwise we were taking cover from the 30 degrees of heat, hours of sunshine as we were asked to spare the water following many weeks without rain, but as always the Good Lord stepped in and gave us some welcome thunder showers at the start of the new week. Don’t forget to say thanks for such a welcome blessing. There was no shortage of places to go and things to do. All Ireland prizes were brought home from the Fleadh in Wexford. It’s not wise to mention names in case I’d forget some but I must mention Jerry Doody’s niece, Katie O Sullivan, who won the All Ireland singing accolade, at the Fleadh. Carrying on the family trait in the footsteps of  her uncle,  granddad  Denny and Granduncle Bertie Doody.  In days gone by no gathering was complete with a few songs from the Doody brothers and they gave of their gifts without reserve. The Apple doesn’t fall far from the tree. Cullen lad James Lehane brought home the All Ireland U12 Accordion Championship  plus the Munster which he won earlier. Again I recall his  granddad, Den Lehane playing  the accordion in the olden days. In humbler times I needn’t tell you, but people like him kept the spark alive until things improved and those coming after got a better chance to advance on the path of their dreams. Many congratulations to them and to all the winners at this year’s Fleadh.

Rural areas are fast outwitting the towns. Regular dances on Mushera mountain. and the lovely village of Carriganima was alive to the sound of music on Saturday night for the Cliona Fagan extravaganza. Our own Diamond sisters (Moynihan ) got the show going and joined the renowned Cliona on stage for a few bars. The show was blessed by fine weather while the threat of thunder and rain hovered overhead and caused a power cut in nearby Clondrohid. Next Saturday night local lad Anthony Dineen will be there to provide the entertainment. Their  tenth annual  fundraiser is set for September 6th.   They walk or run or just be there all those years it’s always well supported and all proceeds divided between Millstreet and Macroom Hospitals. Watch that spot you never know what the brave Sean will come up with next.

Meanwhile the community of Aubane put every shoulder the wheel(s) on Sunday for the Black Water Vintage Group run held  in aid of the wonderful Aubane Social Centre. Organised by Bernard Crowley and aided by Jack Sheehan they got a huge response. In true Aubane fashion they were treated  to tea and scones at the signing in at 10.30 and following a very scenic run they returned to base to a welcome meal of cold plate etc. and entertainment by the lovely Sheila FitzGerald. All proceeds will go to the upkeep of the Aubane Social Centre.   A true example of a people working for the people.

Not to be outdone a group of Cloghoula friends met at the Clara Inn on Sunday afternoon, where stories of old glories were fondly recalled .Memories of the Slanan Rovers Football Club days and many more were enjoyed. Tommy Sheehan and his lovely wife Breeda who are home from Australia for their annual break were thrilled to meet so many of the old friends all in one place. Well done to the organisers and those who took the time to attend.

The town was buzzing on Sunday also for the Leaving Cert Students of our Community school who were celebrating their Debs Day. The previous weeks and I suppose months were a flurry of shopping and planning and thinking about this big occasion to mark the end of the Secondary School lives. When the day came, at long last they were able to dress up in the gowns, the dresses, the creations  which were so daintily chosen, some many weeks ago, some at the last minute. And the shoes, the high heels, the wedges. Comfort had nothing to do with, it was the matching, the look that mattered. Not to mention the hair and the nails and the make-up. And himself in his dark two piece suit with  tie and top pocket hanky to match her ladyship ‘s colours. It’s all part of the whole thing.   They gathered at the Bush Bar to meet up, get photos taken, admire each others style.  About seventy of them in all before boarding  their bound for the Woodstock Hotel in Ennis.  You have to be happy for them.  It’s a big moment in their lives.  Youth must have it’s fling and let them enjoy it, make the most of this end of an era and the beginning of another for them. The  Leaving Certs results are due out this week and their points will relate the path  they are about to take. Striving for too much can often be the ruin of some when perhaps they could find happiness at a more comfortable level. We wish them God’s blessing in their results and in their choices.

Still with schools and the end of school holidays. I’d like to congratulate Donagh Murphy, Killarney road and his finance Alannah Crowley from Clonakilty who got engaged recently and have returned to their teaching posts in Abu-Dabi. We wish them the best of luck.  Good luck to all those who are on holidays at the moment. Stay Safe.

Others flocked to the opening of the  Rose of Tralee Festival where our wonderful Pipe Band led the way as it have done since it all  began. The crowds came in mega numbers to view the extravaganza that is the Rose of Tralee Festival every year. This time the weather was not to kind as they had a mixture of rain and thunder. A feature which created a phenomenon not seen before when the fireworks blended with the flashes of lightening in the sky . Some even got pictures of them, one for the mantelpiece surely. Needless to say we will be glued to the screen to see who will the winner be this year. Happily our Cork Rose from Duhallow is a keen favourite.
